Ryan William Vicino commented on Tuesday, 21 July 2026 17:27Wow! What an interesting story you’ve shared! I’m glad to hear this has enlightened you a bit more on our somewhat forgotten local history! Multiple carcinogens found in the ground water supply were linked to Grumman dumping waste, so there definitely isn’t zero chance it could have affected[…]

Thank you for this series. It's concise, and yet it covers many interesting facts that often get overlooked. Huzzah!

Ronald Wencer commented on Tuesday, 21 July 2026 08:56Was I a Victim?
This is personally enlightening for me. From 1976 through 1981, my family (me, young wife, and young son) lived in Bethpage. Our backyard on North Sheridan Avenue literally abutted the Grumman property, very near the active runway. About 1978, I began to suffer intermittent but severe[…] -

For someone who now lives far away, it's nice to be reminded of Hicksville and the holidays. BTW, in years past, there also used to be a coda following the Twelve Days of Christmas season. The attached is from the Mid-Island Herald's first issue of 1959.

One of the favorite events of the season is the visit from Saint Nick riding along with the Hicksville Fire Department. I happened to be back in town to witness the arrival of the Jolly Old Elf along with the dedicated fire fighters, and receive the coveted popcorn ball. Happy Holidays to All !

Wonderful story!
My wife, Melon, has a similar passion for cars, and by coincidence, is half Lithuanian!
The story of her car (same since 1968) is here: www.mga-mk2.com

Thank you, Dr Kumpikas, it is a sobering view of authoritarian rule. One I feel we are seeing play out globally.

Peter Foster commented on Wednesday, 20 August 2025 13:35Nicely done. I have fond memories since I did my Junior High years and two of my High School years in the Jerusalem Avene School. My Junior and Senior years were moved over to the new high school on Division Avenue. If my memory is still correct, Mabel Farley was[…]

Thank you, Dr. Kumpikas, for this beautiful and moving memoir. When my wife traveled from St. Petersburg to Moscow by rail in 1997, it seems that the trains had not changed very much since your trip from Warsaw to Vilnius.

It really is a small World. I can feel your excitement you described. To this date I still have a small group of my good friends . We graduated in 1961. Hicksville bond just lives with you always.

William Palmer commented on Monday, 21 July 2025 07:08Thanks for sharing this A special treat was to see the lovely offerings of Dr. Kumpikas as well. She was my homeroom teacher at HHS, and I was delighted to be able to introduce my wife to her at our 55th reunion several years ago. I hope we both convey[…]

I recall during my geometry regents exam, I had an "ear worm" or stuck song syndrome (INMI - involuntary musical imagery ). Still to this day, whenever I hear the song "Cold As Ice" by Foreigner it brings me back to that test. I passed thankfully and had internal musical accompaniment that may have contributed to that outcome.

A Leo Gorcey and Huntz Hall shout out!
Emma Meyer and the Tech Crew are in good company when the Bowery Boys are referenced. Nice work saving the recording of the production. Indubitably the rescue outcome was a success.

Ronald Wencer commented on Wednesday, 21 May 2025 13:26It occurs to me that the article fails to state the actual wording of the Regents Prayer. Although I do not recall ever using the word "beg" when it was said aloud (I think we instead said "ask"), both Wikpedia and a 1951 news article give the following as the[…]

William Palmer commented on Tuesday, 20 May 2025 08:57I remember participating in the School Prayer Revolt, now with some embarrassment as my views are quite different from what they were in 1964. Yet, prayer continues to be a significant part of my daily life, as I continue to serve as an ordained clergyperson and chaplain. I find it[…]

This brings back good memories. A friend of mine worked there at the Wetsons at the junction with Levittown Parkway. We would stop in a visit when we were out and about. Then when Titus Oaks was there I worked up in Glen Head and would stop after work each payday and pick up some new vinyl.

Ronald Wencer commented on Friday, 02 May 2025 17:18A few years after writing my original article, I found a 1920s news report which stated that the KKK was then supporting the School Board campaigns of George Duke and Frank Chlumsky, both of whom would get elected and be in place for this dedication. Despite the KKK's already having[…]
