Dear Readers, Please make sure that
Thank you,
Your Editors
Dear Alumni...
This is an appeal to "you all." Production of the newsletter takes a lot of time. Fortunately, I am retired and have time to devote to production that I truly enjoy. There are certain tasks that have to be completed each month following the posting of the newsletter.
Over the past year, most everyone on our mail list has received a birthday card, anniversary card or both. We have manufactured, over a lengthy period of time, two lists...one for anniversaries...one for birthdays. When new readers ask to be included on our mail list, what we normally do is sent a prefab note. At the same time, the new reader is added to our master list on excel and added to the mail list at hotmail. In the note, we ask for birthday, anniversary and spousal information. When the information is sent, the lists have to be updated.
If someone out there has the time, and would like to help with the newsletter, please send a note to
Thanks. Warm Regards,
Buffalo Bob Casale

The Newsletter
Hicksville Vietnam War Era Veterans Memorial
We avoided a "June swoon" with 53 new names for the month, bringing the current total to 338. While this was not as good as May (with 63 new names), it was another very strong month. 116 new names have been added in the last 2 months, slightly more than a third of our total, so our momentum is being sustained thanks to the help of numerous Hicksville High Alumni who continue to send us names and information!
Another Project Team Member joined us in June. He is John (Jay) Tranchina, Class of 1964. Jay was in the Army and served in Vietnam and is also very committed to this Project, as are all team members. In addition to adding 13 names for us in June, Jay has contacted The Anton Press, publishers of The Hicksville News, Hicksville Illustrated, The Hicksville Pennysaver and a number of similar publications for other Long Island communities. The Anton Press has agreed to run an article with our request in these news publications to broaden our search for people who qualify for the Memorial.
Once again we ask that for your part as a reader of HixNews and former alumnus of HHS, please see our update in the Veterans Section of this newsletter. After reviewing the qualifications for the Memorial, please review the list of names and let us know who we have yet to find. Also, we would appreciate if you can help us fill in some of the missing information or clarify information we have that is uncertain (shown in red and with question marks). While we have gained significant momentum, we still have a long way to go, since we estimate there could be between 2-3 thousand veterans with ties to Hicksville who served in our Armed Forces around the world during the Vietnam Era.
Thank you,
Joe Carfora
HHS 1962
Bob, thank you for the lovely card.
You are one of a few people who know my age!! I spent my birthday in Florida. Maine can be pretty cold and wet in May and as it turned out, I missed a messy week here and enjoyed the lovely sun, sand and surf of Florida beaches.Let me know your whereabouts in your journey. Looking forward to seeing you and Ted in Maine.
Best,
Carol (Makowski) Kinney '61
Thanks for the anniversary greeting! Forty-one years seem to have raced by, but we're grateful for health and stamina to go out and celebrate tonight!
Bill Palmer '64
Bob and Crew, Thanks for the beautiful Anniversary card.
We were fortunate this year to spend our anniversary in Paris seeing the sites and walking through the streets where Glen lived as a child. We also visited Omaha beach and the American Cemetery in Normandy on Memorial Day weekend. A very special and somber experience.
Thanks also for all the hard work you all but into the Hix Newsletter. Both Glen and I enjoy it each month.
Maureen (Hanifan) '66 and Glen Olsen '65
Thanks, Bob - got the June Newsletter. Reading the tributes to our dear PAT, with tears streaming down my face. I doubt that Pat realized how many lives and to what extent she had an impact on all our lives. How fortunate we all were to know such a wonderful person. I keep thinking how proud Miss Farley would be of OUR newsletter and the folks that give it so much time and expertise. Thank you so much again and again.
Ellen Boos Bruwer '54
Editor note: Thanks Ellen for your comments. We realize the shortness of experience we now feel with the absence of Pat. We hope to be able to grow from day to day and begin to join Pat's team.

Hey Bob, where have you been since May 2?
Bonnie (Scharr) Papes
Bonnie
We had to stop the trip on May 11th. We were stranded in Savannah for a week waiting for the motor home to be fixed. I had trouble with the landing gear on the front of the fifth wheel. That was fixed and we moved on to Charleston on Saturday the ninth.
Ted talked with his wife, Terri, in New York. Her dad was in the hospital and they didn't expect him to live. Ted decided he had better go home to be with Terri. So, on Monday the 11th we drove 200 miles from Charleston, SC to Martinez, Georgia. Ted rented a car and drove home on Tuesday, 12 May.
Plus, my daughter, Dawn, had her hands full taking care of Sarah, my granddaughter and Joyce who has full blown Alzheimer's. Dawn really needed help, so we cut the trip short and plan to continue. Just when, I'm not sure. Dawn started a new job in South Carolina. It's a 40-minute trip with no traffic. The job is great and the pay is good. And the hours'incredible'four days of 10 hours. She works Monday to Thursday'off for three days.
The only drawback (not really a drawback) is Sarah. I get Sarah at 5:45am as Dawn is leaving for work. Sometimes, Sarah is asleep'sometimes we have to watch Sprout. I'm learning all the songs. I get to dress, feed and take Sarah to school every morning'excuse me, Monday to Thursday. Friday is my day of rest.
However, I go to the gym every day (OMNI) and work out on the equipment after I drop Sarah at school. I even go when I don't drop Sarah at school. I do three miles on the treadmill and use some of their pull down equipment to help maintain the strength I no longer have. I say to myself, I'm 66 years old now'with the same enthusiasm I had when I was, let's say, 38'a time of my life that was special for various reasons.
High school was different. I can remember running the track when all the girls were out there playing field hockey, or softball, or whatever they did after school. We really wanted to impress them with our prowess at physical activity'hey; they were doing the same thing'trying to impress the guys.
Enough thinking about old times. Ted did about 900 bike miles. Quite an accomplishment in less than 30 days of riding. Our restart might have to be in Maine if we get started in September. The temps down South are horrific in August and just beyond. We shall see but I will let you know what is happening.
Poor Joyce is hanging in there. I think I told you that I left New York for Martinez, Georgia and moved in with Joyce to try to help out. We have not lived together since 1992. There is a lot she can still do on her own. I still have to dispense her medication every day. She's taking two kinds of pills for the Alzheimer's. Whatever she cannot do, I help her to accomplish that task. I am learning a lot about the disease. All she does all day is walk from room to room, wringing her hands, and taking lotsa deep breaths. She cannot explain herself and she can't even ask questions. She says come here and I have to follow her to find out what the problem is. It's really sad for someone who was brilliant. What a great history teacher she was. Anyhow, I will let you know.
Love yah

G'day Everyone,
I know I've said this before, but I'll say it again......... I just love receiving my HixNews, reading about everyone's life growing up in Hicksville, where I lived until my parents immigrated to Australia (OZ) in 1969. And I still live in hope of one-day finding some old classmates who might remember me or one of my sisters from East Street School in Hicksville.
I am still deeply saddened about Pat Driscoll passing away as Pat & I had become email buddies a number of years ago while I was still living in OZ. She is definitely sadly missed & I for one shall cherish her friendship always.
I have a special request and I'm not sure if you allow such messages to be posted in the Hixnews but here goes ...... I've been staying in LIC for the past 6 months since arriving from China in December. I'm now looking for a new place to live and I'm a little worried about going on web sites. I'm interested in finding a room available to rent in NYC, preferably close to LIC where I am currently working. It will only be for a temporary period as I am not sure how long I will be here for or how long my job will last, so I would prefer a week-to-week basis if possible. OR, maybe someone needs a house sitter??????? If any of our fellow Hicksvillers might have or know of someone who can help it would be greatly appreciated! I can be contacted through
Thanks again for a fabulous newsletter!
Best wishes to you all from,
Patti
I was just forwarded this newsletter from my cousin. My name is Susan (Garb) Love, class of '72. I live in Santa Barbara, CA with my husband and novelist Bob Mitchell and our Labrador retriever, Koslo. I am a professional artist. It would be lovely to receive this newsletter. Thanks.
Susan
Hi!
I noticed that Kathy has been deleted. She had trouble with her e-mail address at excite.com and switched to aol. You can send the newsletter to her at
Thank you for the wonderful newsletter. I enjoy reading about graduates of HHS and what they are doing now.

In the Rudy Pinotauro picture, I've recognized two more of the girls. Upper right blonde is Pat Holden and lower left, leaner chick, is Beverly Kaye. Hope you can get some of the others identified by other folks who get the newsletter.

Hi Bob:
I asked Roger if he knew where the photo of me came from (the one printed in the Newsletter). He said you have a large collection of yearbooks from which you take the photos. I just didn't remember that photo being in there. You guys do a great job on the Newsletter!
Thanks.

Hi'
My name is Audrey (Olsen) Lent. I graduated in l951 and my husband Bill Lent and I still live on L.I. out in Shoreham. We look forward to the Hixnews every month and appreciate all the hard work that's put into sending it to all of us every month.
I just want to thank you and the HHS Newsletter staff for the lovely anniversary e-card. On top of all your other newsletter duties, you also make time to remember birthdays and anniversaries. It is very much appreciated.
Thank you again,
Carole (Kiever) Ohliger '57
Dear Robert,
Thank you so much for the lovely anniversary e-card! That was cute and thoughtful. We celebrated our 40th anniversary on a weekend away in Williamsburg, VA. It was great!
I really enjoy the newsletter every month. Great job!
Kathleen J. Adamo
Bob,
You made my day! Great card and much thanks. Leslie and I also thank you for the anniversary recognition. 42 years married to my high school sweetheart Leslie Worley Smith and 6 years hanging out in high school and college.
Great to see names from the good old high school days, the Winkel clan updating their address and the awesome high school year book photographs of old friend Vic Rerisi and his beautiful bride who without I never would have made it through HHS graduation as well as St. John's graduation. They are two great people and would love to meet up with them sometime in the future.
You guys are terrific and keep up the great work.
Bob Smith Class of '63
I was so saddened to hear of Pat's passing. I had the opportunity to chat with her about Hicksville reunion possibilities last year and she was so helpful and kind. I want her family to know how many lives she has touched through this website and how she will be in our prayers and hearts forever.
Thank you all for the wonderful selfless job you do for all of us "Hicksville at Heart" graduates who stay connected to our wonderful childhood friends because of you.
Stay well.
Dianne and Marty Burkhardt (1968 & 1963)
Hi,
Enjoy reading your newsletter. I was wondering how some one gets elected to The Hall of Fame? Charlie Gouse, who recently passed away was such a great music educator, and taught for 25 years in Hicksville. His recent obituary in Newsday outlined all his professional accomplishments. I would like to see him added to the Hall of Fame. On July 20, I will celebrate my 70th birthday.
Dorothea (Hoffmann) Salzberg, Class of 1957
Editor Note: We will accept your note as a nomination of Charlie Gouse for inclusion in the Hall of Fame. We normally make a selection at the end of the year.
I'm so sorry to hear that Pat died. This newsletter has become one of my favorite things and she has been very much a part of it. Please express my deepest condolences to her family.
Pat Meehan Kelly Welles '58
Dear HixNews Editors,
Thanks for another great issue and for 'advertising' our effort up front like this!! That will definitely catch everyone's attention, should the lead in in the Newsletter Section not do it.
Best regards on Behalf of The Hicksville Vietnam Era War Memorial Project Team,
Joe Carfora '62
Hi All,
How very sad to hear the news about Pat Driscoll; I have enjoyed reading the Hix News and I know she was very passionate about it. I did send an e-mail months ago to let you know I am chairing the HHS '69 Forty-Year Reunion (through Reunions of America).
Thanks
Diana (D'Antuono) DePalma-Henne
Thank you for all your hard work. I love reading the newsletter. You can add Connecticut as my residence.
Arlene L. Gottesman
Dear Editors,
Love the Hicksville HS newsletter. My place of residence is Allentown, PA.
Thanks,
Barb Finocchio, 1970
I know you're busy, but you missed my birthday!
Karl Milenkovic June 14th, 1962 Thanks
You don't have my place of residence on your list - Judith Rycar (formerly Karish) - class of 1969 - residence Queens NY - birthday July 17
Thanks to all the editors for putting out this wonderful publication each month! for doing a tremendous job
John Polli class of '75
Love the job you guys do on the newsletter. Look forward to it every month. For some reason I didn't receive it this month (June). Just wanted to make sure I was still on the list..
Thanks,
Debbie (Fischer) Dowdell, Class of 73
Editor Note: We had a little problem during the first installation of our advice to you that the newsletter is available following the death of Pat who always wanted the responsibility for publishing advise that the newsletter is available. Pat always published that we were on line.
Bob screwed up the hyperlink; please don't chastise him for that. But, if you want to, please chastise Bob because Bob has big shoulders.
Plus, this is a reminder. We do not send the newsletter to our subscribers. Our newsletter is published monthly to our website, http://hixnews.com.
You can access the website any time you want to.
Enjoy! We enjoy publishing to the website.
Hi Bob'
I am Pats Daughter, Jen. I cannot thank you enough for the awesome lovely note and check to Hospice.
Editor note: the check to Hospice in Florida was a gesture from the Newsletter editors but also is a contribution from all newsletter alumni that loved Pat. The family requested a donation to the facility instead of sending flowers or Mass cards.)
I know this is just as hard for you as it is for us. Mom always talked about the 2 Bob's (actually there are three Bob's). She talked about great, wonderful people and all the friends she made through the newsletter or got back together with via the Internet. I cannot tell you how proud I am of my mom. Pat was a kind, loving person with a heart that was so big. So big that it helped pump her heart for so long when she was suffering. And she always recognized the love she had for the newsletter and all the wonderful people who loved her for being so sincere and so in touch with reality.
Thank you for helping sustain the newsletter that Mom started. Please keep it going. I love reading all about Hicksville and the wonderful community we grew up in. I will keep in touch and you do the same, please.
Thank you again and God bless you and your family.
Love always
Jen

Bob'
Thank you so much. What a lovely thing to do. Can't believe it's been 52 years and I'm still with the guy from Mepham High whom I fell in love with in my Sophmore year at HHS. Time really does fly by when your happy. And to think, 'They Tried To Tell Us We're Too Young!!!!!!!!!!'
Love,
Ginny (Elwood) and Bud Bowen
Bob,
Found a picture of me with Archbishop Cooke (before he took over the NY Archdiocese and became Cardinal). I was taking my 4th Degree in the Knights of Columbus. He was one of the speakers. (1 June 67).My AF career was in Services ' Commissary, Dining Halls, etc. I intended to be in for 4 years and go back home to my Dad's business (Kings Park Plumbing & Heating Supply). But when I was in Del Rio Texas, I met an AF Nurse from Flushing who went to Adelphi (I went to C.W. Post). We got married and at the 4 year point I was enjoying military life and she was happy being an AF wife so we stayed. The end of the war brought big cuts and I was sent home from Germany. We'd been three 3 years.
I didn't see much future in NY and I had burned the bridge to my Dad's business. So I took an Air Force Civil Service job at Sheppard AFB here in Wichita Falls. I worked there from Oct 74 until retirement in January of 2002. We raised 5 kids and never felt like leaving here ' although I now feel the 100 degree summer heat much more than I did when we were young.
God's been good to me and life is enjoyable. What the future holds is unknown ' my wife has been diagnosed with the early onset of Alzheimer's but the only problem so far is a minor problem with her balance. I'll keep your and your family in my prayers.
Jim Wise
My name is Lorraine Burns Sholl. I am listed as HHS and live in Florida. Change the HHS to 1954, my date of graduation. My husband is listed as John but he went to St. Dominic's.
Thank you for correcting the info.

Hi,
I'm looking for Danny Van Cise. Lost track of him years ago. Not sure what class, but maybe 1959.

On May 26, 2009, the Hicksville Historical Society honored Hicksville Veterans at their meeting in the Hicksville Library. Society President Bob Koenig welcomed member Mark Thomas, as host, providing questions to ask our guest Veterans that night. Our five veterans that night, Michael Kilty (Iraq), Richard Uhlich (Vietnam), Artie Uhlick (WWII), George Thomas (WWII), Sam Bergholtz (WWII) made for a diverse cross-section that made Mark's presentation so interesting.
The Society heard tales of bravery, capture, and rescue that could have continued onto another night. Yet every Veteran showed mutual respect for each other's tales. It was truly a moving meeting.

A very nice card Bob. I just got a black lab and he wears a red collar. How appropriate that you would send this card. Wow! Thank you!

Thanx for the e-card, Bob.
Best, Henry & Trish Lichtenstein
Thanks, I'm 61 and if I knew that I was going to live this long, I would have taken better care of myself! (Actually, Thank GOD, I'm in excellent health)

Buffalo Bob,
Joan and I received your Happy Anniversary greeting card. Thank you for your thoughtfulness remembering our anniversary (#42 with 3 grown children and 7 grandchildren). Sorry it took so long to open the card, however I am a bit paranoid about viruses spreading with greeting cards and will usually wait for a reminder, which is my clue that the greeting card is real.
I trust you are doing well and want to take this opportunity to thank you for the effort you put forth keeping our alumni in touch.
Best regards,
Tom Pilko
I was not able to "link" to the 1959 Reunion Committee via HixNews, but thought you might forward this info if it helps them locate someone on their "missing alumni" list:
Judith Strehl Rijke is, I believe, the sister of Phil Strehl -- he graduated with me in 1958 and was at our class reunion last September. This is his contact info, from the class directory:
Send request for info to
Hope this helps.
June Olsen Cullen, HHS 1958
Thanks for remembering our anniversary. How's Georgia. My brother-in-law moved there from NYS recently. So good to hear from you. Again we are very sorry to hear that Joyce has Alzheimer's. My mother had Alzheimer's and Frank's mother and father had that terrible disease also. We know the anguish you are going through.
Did you leave Long Island for good? Are any other 1961 graduates living in Georgia?
Take care
Mary Ann & Frank Smith
Editor Note: I am gone from Long Island for good. Yes, there are quite a few transplants here in Georgia.
Ten more names were added to the Hicksville Vietnam War Era Veterans Memorial the first day of publication of the HixNews June 2009 issue!
Thanks for the Editors for thinking to also put us in the email cover note announcing the newsletter's availability!!
Joe Carfora
All,
You are receiving this email if you are on the list of Hicksville Vietnam War Era Veterans, as I have many of your email addresses saved in a special column on our Master List of names. I apologize in advance to those of you who may receive this email more than once if you are also listed as the contact who supplied additional names to me. This is because I copied the emails directly from the Master List and pasted them into the send list of this note.
In any event, I'm doing my best to pass along Bob Casale's note, which appears below. As most of you know, Bob is a Vietnam War Era Veteran and also one of the editors of HixNews. If you have one or more pictures you'd like to send Bob from when you were in the military, please email digital pictures directly to him or send prints to his home address 335 Patton Court, Martinez, GA 30907. All prints sent to Bob will be returned to you.
Please do not reply to me regarding this request. Send your replies directly to Bob Casale at
Thanks,
Joe Carfora, HHS 1962
P.S. to All: We now have 295 names on the Master List of Hicksville Vietnam War Era Veterans. Due to the large number of recipients of this email, I have to send it out multiple times in smaller batches for it to go through, so do not be alarmed if you do not see one of your friends on the distribution list as that person is likely on a separate mailing of this note.
Editor Note'.I have received a nice selection of photos from various alumni and I thank you for your quick response. I have an idea that I'm working on and request more photos from more alumni. There were a lot of us who served. Send more.
Warm Regards
Buffalo Bob Casale
Hi,
Would you please disconnect my e-mail address off your website? There are really not a lot of classmates that I know on the newsletter each month.
Thank you.
Jane Harlin
Hi my name is Lesley Hauser. I used to go by Lesley Hohauser. My brother called me to tell me that Susan Makov was looking for me on your website. That is so amazing!!! I have not seen or heard from her in about 39 years. I would like to get in touch with her-- how do I do it? Thanks for your time and now that I have found your website I will be an avid reader.
I graduated from Hicksville High in 1970.
Lesley Hauser

Hi Bob, my name is John Ziegler (63), and a VEV like you.
I received an e-mail from Joe Carfora, asking me to send some pictures with reference to our Viet Nam era. I've enclosed 2 attachments because they are about the only pictures that aren't buried away somewhere. The first is a picture of me when I got drafted in 1965, and the second is of the day I got married 10 month later. I married Adele Herrmann (65), in Germany. It's an interesting story of where and when we married. We will be married 43 years next month.
Someday, I'll have to tell you about our marriage mania. I've also included a third attachment of my bride and I in Alaska, 5 years ago.
Thanks to you and all of the Hix News staff.
John Ziegler (63)
Hello Bob,
I tried to follow your escapades on your blog but I have not seen any updates since early May. Are you still on the journey and if so where are you. How is it proceeding? It sounds like a great adventure. I am curious to know if it met or exceeded your expectations to date.
I know Pat's death has touched you and I am sorry for your loss. It must have been great working with her. It sounds like her enthusiasm was a very important factor in the success of the newsletter.
Hoping you are still on track to Maine. The island is alive with people. Unfortunately it is very rainy.
Carol A. Kinney
Editor Note: see note sent to Bonnie Papes earlier on this page. It was awesome, to answer your inquiry about the journey meeting expectations. We saw some great things because we spent some time in certain locations absorbing history and the feel for the local people. I literally took almost a thousand pictures. You can see some that were posted at http://community.webshots.com/user/robertcasale. There are about 20 different albums posted there that covers the part of the trip that was completed.
Dear Bob,
Thank you for the anniversary card. It was a very nice surprise and nice to be remembered. We will be celebrating our 41anniversary. Where did the time go?
Eileen (O'Halloran) and Paul Holmes
HI! Can you put me back on the newsletter mailing list? I'm Joan Berger (Claudy). Graduated in '79. My husband's name is Larry. We live in Glen Cove, NY and have three chlidren. I am anxiously awaiting HHS's 30 year high school reunion. So if you are out there, Class of '79, and haven't heard, July 11th is our graduating class' 30 year reunion!!
Thank you and good job!
Joan Berger (Claudy) '79
Hi Bob
Thx for the cute B-Day card, yikes 66!!! Now how did that happen. You are all doing a GREAT job and I was so sad to hear about Pat..... She will be greatly missed by ALL.
Are you back from your trip? I've enjoyed reading about all your adventures.
I received a note from Mary O, asking if I would help plan our 50th reunion (if we have one) I told her count me in - haven't heard back from her but I think we should definitely have a 50th - don't you?
How is Joyce doing? I've been working doing computer input at a Alzheimer/Dementia facility. One of my girlfriends recommended me and I've been working there for almost a year now (wow, I just realized it's been a year already) and I see how hard it is for the family. Hope all is well
with you, keep intouch

Hi,
I sent you an email the other day regarding my brother Jerry Fischer. He joined the Army in September of 1967 and served in Japan. He's HHS class of 67. I should have given you his name as Jerome J. Fischer. Hope this isn't an inconvenience.
Thank You,
Debbie (Fischer) Dowdell, HHS class of 73
Thanks, Debbie. There was no inconvenience at all as I never received your first email and don't know why! So, I'm very glad you wrote this second note. I just added Jerry with his full first name and middle initial. Thanks for sending me the information.
Also, I just sent a note to all the Vets who I have email addresses for regarding a request from Bob Casale, one of the HixNews editors and a Vet himself. Bob is asking that pictures of the Vets on our list be sent to him either digitally or by snail mail. He wants pictures of them from their military days. If you have pictures of Jerry in uniform, please email them to Bob at
I'll forward you a copy of the email request I sent out this morning which contains his home address where prints can be sent if you don't have digital pictures.
Thanks again,
Joe Carfora, HHS 1962
A day ago I was watching the Animal channel. The story was about a reporter who was run down by a mule at a race in Brazil. And guess what? Roger Downey had a big part in the show. It seems that he was there and perhaps part of the race. In any case he was used as the expert on mule racing. Very cool and I delight to me. I had spent some time with Roger at the reunion and he spoke enthusiastically about his mule racing.
Ed Zivica '58
Joe Carfaro said you were collecting Service pictures. I sent my name to Joe for the list. Here is the only picture I could find at the moment of my days as a sailor. If you need anything else let me know.

Here is a picture (left) of Franco Campanello '67, Dale Wicks James '67, and Jim Rubins '67 in Franco's urban garden behind the Copley Square Marriott Hotel in Back Bay Boston. It is a strip of land over the AMTRAK tracks that heads East/West out of Boston. Frank has set up a non-profit community organization to develop and maintain an "urban garden"
To all HixNews subscribers
We are interested in adding an art page to the newsletter. We know from past experience that there are quite a few subscribers who are involved in the arts. We thought this might be a good venue to showcase their talents. Or, perhaps you have a picture or sculpture or special set of end tables that you want to share with your alumni. It is hoped we can showcase one or two artists per month. Your response is required.
This would not be restricted to painting, but would encompass pottery, wood carvings, sculptures and any craft that could be considered an Art form. It can be works from the part time hobbyist, to those actively pursuing a career in the Arts. We are interested in hearing from you and any ideas that you have on the way it should be presented.
Please submit a few photos of a piece of work that you would like to share, plus any information about the piece, as well as any biographical info on your involvement with that art form.
This was sent to me by a special friend who lives in Aux, France. Her name is Danielle Casale and she is married to Jacques Casale' No relationship to Bob or Eileen Casale.
This is an adorable little girl who is very talkative! The video is in French and the girl is telling a story to her mom. This girl is only 3! Pay attention to the very rich vocabulary she uses.
Hopefully some of you speak French and can really enjoy the story. I think it is remarkable even though I don't understand French. Click the below hyperlink or cut and paste to your browser.
Please enjoy.
Warm Regards
Buffalo Bob Casale

Hi,
Please add my name to the list, thanks!
Pattie Hughes, Class of 1969
We want to thank all you hard working people that put out the Newsletter for our Anniversary card. It's been 57 years and we're still going strong, at least as strong as you can at our age. We really enjoy the Newsletter and look forward to getting it every month, but i guess our age group is starting to dwindle. The late 40's and early 50's when we attended Hicksville High were really wonderful and we feel we were a unique generation.
Thank you again,
Audrey (Olsen) and Bill Lent "51
Editor Note: thanks for your input. I think the earlier generation of Hicksville graduates all feel the same'that growing up in our community was unique and very special.
Do you have a Bill Reilly on your memorial list? or William Reilly USMC Same -e-same. sergeant E-5.
Herb Pearce
Eric Greene from the class of 1961 visited Buffalo Bob's webpage at classmates recently.
Eric should send us a bio sketch of his life and some pictures we all can enjoy.
Bob,
Thank you so much for the birthday card. It was a nice surprise. I hope you and the Hixnews folks are doing well.
Take Care.
Love, Cathy Bell
Hi Everyone,
You guys do such a great job-I look forward to the Newsletter every month. Can you possibly help us (listed below) to put out a survey of people from the class of 1960 who may be interested in a reunion next Summer here on Long Island?
Any one interested can contact:
Ann Carmody Burley at:
Kathy Millevolte at :
Beverly Carman Feinman at:
Gayle (Whitson) McCarthy at:
We would like to get an idea of how many before we can pursue a venue.
Thanks for any help you can give,
Ann Carmody Burley

Hi,
I've lost touch with almost everyone over the years at Hicksville High School. I've located a few by pure diligence....but there's no time like the present to reconnect. How do I get in touch with others?
Peggy Maier
Also for art stuff - please feel free to take anything you wish off my website: www.calligraphybypat.com. I have samples of my work as a professional calligrapher since 1979 - 30 years! I have taught calligraphy since 1981 and have attended 13 international calligraphy conferences. I still am creatively doing calligraphy for many diverse client requests.

Honoring our Veterans
July 4th 2009...
"The [fourth] day of July, 1776, will be the most memorable epoch in the history of America. I am apt to believe that it will be celebrated by succeeding generations as the great anniversary festival. It ought to be commemorated as the day of deliverance, by solemn acts of devotion to God Almighty. It ought to be solemnized with pomp and parade, with shows, games, sports, guns, bells, bonfires, and illuminations, from one end of this continent to the other, from this time forward forever more." -- John Adams
One of the most enduring myths about Independence Day is that Congress signed the Declaration of Independence on July 4, 1776. The myth had become so firmly established that, decades after the event and nearing the end of their lives, even the elderly Thomas Jefferson and John Adams had come to believe that they and the other delegates had signed the Declaration on the fourth. Most delegates actually signed the Declaration on August 2, 1776. In a remarkable series of coincidences, both John Adams and Thomas Jefferson, two founding fathers of the United States and the only two men who signed the Declaration of Independence to become president, died on the same day: July 4, 1826, which was the United States' 50th anniversary. President James Monroe died exactly five years later, on July 4, 1831, but he was not a signatory to the Declaration of Independence.
* Held since 1785, the Bristol Fourth of July Parade in Bristol, Rhode Island is the oldest continuous Independence Day celebration in the United States.
* Since 1912, the Rebild Society, a Danish-American friendship organization, has held a July 4th weekend festival that serves as a homecoming for Danish-Americans in the Rebild section of Denmark.
* Since 1916, Nathan's Hot Dog Eating Contest in Coney Island, Brooklyn, New York City supposedly started as a way to settle a dispute among four immigrants as to who was the most patriotic.
* Since 1959, the International Freedom Festival is jointly held in Detroit, Michigan and Windsor, Ontario during the last week of June each year as a mutual celebration of Independence Day and Canada Day (July 1). It culminates in a large fireworks display over the Detroit River.
* Since 1959, NASCAR holds the Coke Zero 400 (formerly the "Firecracker 400") on the Fourth.
* The famous Macy's fireworks display over the East River in New York City has been televised nationwide on NBC since 1976.
* Since 1973, the Boston Pops Orchestra hosts a music and fireworks show over the Charles River Esplanade. In recent years it too is televised nationwide as "Pops Goes the Fourth."
* On the Capitol lawn in Washington, D.C., "A Capitol Fourth," a free concert, precedes the fireworks and attracts over half a million people annually.
