Dear Buffalo Bob,

Last week I met with Bob McDevitt who heads up the Levittown Vietnam Memorial Plaque effort after learning he lived near me in Florida . What a coincidence! Bob shared their final plaque with me, which I'd appreciate having published in HixNews' July 1 issue.

Thanks to a member of their Project Team who read an issue of HixNews, you put me in touch with them to confirm three Levittown residents who were killed in action (KIA) that appear on our List of Confirmed Names, as they attended Hicksville High. Since their list of names includes the high school attended, you can see who they are by referring to the attached list Bob gave me.

I also shared our work with Bob. They will have the attached list turned into a plaque for presentation and display at the Levittown Historical Society Museum, but after hearing of our work may also consider a Memorial Stone to be displayed somewhere in Levittown. During the Vietnam War Era, Levittown had four high schools; Island Trees, Memorial, MacArthur and Division and a total of 37 people who paid the ultimate price in that war appear on the plaque to honor them. Bob told me that sometime after the baby boom generation, Levittown Memorial was closed, as the remaining three high schools are now sufficient to accommodate the current population.

Best regards,
Joe

Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial - PROJECT UPDATE

NEWS FLASH !!! Official IRS approval was received verbally in June for our not-for-profit (NFP) Fund Raising Account! As soon as we receive the formal letter from the IRS, we will open our bank account to begin receiving donations for construction of the Memorial.

Three new names were added in June for a new total of 1,886 names on the Confirmed List. Unfortunately, very little progress was made during the month on the Unconfirmed List of Names and we urgently need the help of the HixNews readership to verify whether or not the 186 people on this list qualify to be included in the Memorial and to continue to assist us in filling in still missing data from the Confirmed List of Names.

To view the complete report on the Memorial's progress, please see this month's update by clicking on the Honoring Our Veterans tab of this newsletter. Clicking on the two links near the bottom of the update will bring you to the complete Confirmed and Unconfirmed Lists of Names as of the end of June.

Please remember, if you have any new information to send us, my email address is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

On behalf of the Project Team,
Joe Carfora, HHS 1962

Memory Lane

You Know You're From Hicksville If

I remember Willie, the Chef at Milleridge Inn, yelling at me for not getting back fast enough from the Bakery with the Cinnamon Bread mini-loafs (because I stopped to eat one on the way). Also making the French fries at Wetson's and life guarding at Cantiaque Park . Another job, folding sweaters at National Shirt Shop while my friends were trying to get me into Sid's Pants.
Ray Gamble, Holy Trinity, 1971

Where did you work to earn a couple of extra scheckles ($$$) to supplement your allowance, if you got one?

Crown Bakery...a couple of afternoons a week, Saturday night, and Sunday morning until 12:30 (so I could leave and go to the 12:45 mass at Holy Family)
Marianne Carine Hoerner 1968

Millerirdge Inn Bakery and Confectionary. Best job ever.
Geralyn Connolly Shaw 1980

I remember listening to my eight track tapes in the parking lot at the Milleridge Inn before I had to go into work, then going in the back by the kitchen.
Sharon Aboulafia Mitacek 1974

Christine Vitiello Madigan

Best donut shop still on the corner.
Cheryl Gries Brown 1972

House of Donuts on Corner of East Marie Street

It wasn't a donut shop when I went to the movies there. It used to be Ray's Luncheonette. Burgers, egg creams, great tunes on the juke box, pinball and a pool table. Great hang out!
Gary Killen 1972

Remember the Pawn Shop next to the Theater?
Ray Gamble

Remember the army navy store next to the Hicksville movie theater ? Best window shopping ever; switch blade knives, canteens, binoculars, old comic books, no end of junk. And I remember seeing Elvis Presley in kissing cousins at the Hicksville movie theater. It was air conditioned and the first place you went on a hot summer might. Maybe 1964?

Casale's Corner

A doctor entered the hospital in hurry after being called in for an urgent surgery on a little boy. He answered the call ASAP, changed his clothes & went directly to the surgery block.

He found the boy's father pacing in the hall waiting for the doctor. On seeing him, the dad yelled, "Why did you take all this time to come? Don't you know that my son's life is in danger? Don't you have any sense of responsibility?"

The doctor smiled & said, "I'm sorry, I wasn't in the hospital & I came as fast as I could after receiving the call. And now, I wish you'd calm down so that I can do my work."

"Calm down?! What if your son was in this room right now, would you calm down? If your own son dies now what will you do??" said the father angrily.

The doctor smiled again & replied, "this conversation is costing precious time. Let me go save a life."

The surgery took some hours after which the doctor went out happy. He saw the father in the waiting room and said, "Thank goodness your son is saved!"  And without waiting for the father's reply he carried on his way running. "If you have any questions, ask the nurse!!"

"Why is he so arrogant," the father asked? "He couldn't wait some minutes so that I ask about my son's state," the father said when seeing the nurse several minutes after the doctor left.

The nurse answered, tears coming down her face. "His son died yesterday in a road accident," she said. "He was at the burial when we called him for your son's surgery."

"And now that he saved your son's life, he left running to finish his son's burial."

MORAL: "Never judge anyone superficially..... because you never know how their life is & what they're going through.
