People Looking for People
We've taken a new approach to this section. It's been re-organized by Henry Lichtenstein as an online spreadsheet. Rather than publish the list here, it's now available below. If you have found the person you are looking for, please let the editors know so the name can be removed from the list. If there's someone you're looking for, just send your request and we'll be happy to add it to the list. If anyone knows these folks, send an email to:

Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial Project Update
147 new names were added in February for a new total of 1,286!!
The past month's contribution again came largely thanks to the work of one of our Alumni in collaboration with the Hicksville Public Library Historian. With the continuation of this effort and the additional contributions of our entire Alumni, we expect the list will continue to see much growth in the months ahead.
Please see the Veteran's Section of this issue for the latest information on the project and what you can continue to do to help its success.
It's also more important than ever (even if you don't have new names to send us) to review the list for missing information or information shown in red that needs correction or clarification. Please send me an email if you can help us fill in the blanks. High school class year has been specifically noted, where we have it, to make this review easier for you to scan the list. We made a nice dent in filling in the blank information in February, so let's all pitch in to continue to do that!
On behalf of the Project Team,

WABC-TV TELEVISION SHOW "WHAT WOULD YOU DO?"
Hi everyone!
Just a quick note to let you know that last December this senior citizen booked the ABC-TV Reality Show, "What Would You Do?" with John Quinones. The episode is called, "The Workout from Hell." Along with another actress, I had to disrupt a Silver Sneakers senior citizen gym class and they weren't too happy about it until John and the cameras showed up. It was a little uncomfortable but fun too and the seniors were terrific! I'm told it should air at 10pm on WABC-TV, (Ch. 7 in NYC), on Friday, March 11th. So, if you have time, please tune in.
Best to everyone, especially the class of 1956!

Honoring our Veterans
Operation Tidal Wave
Was an air attack by bombers of the United States Army Air Forces (USAAF) on nine oil refineries around Ploieşti , Romania on 1 August 1943, during WWII.. It was a strategic bombing mission and part of the 'oil campaign' to deny petroleum based fuel to the Axis. The mission resulted in "no curtailment of overall product output", and so was unsuccessful.
This mission was one of the costliest for the USAAF in the European Theatre, 53 aircraft and 660 aircrewmen were lost. It was the worst loss ever suffered by the USAAF on a single mission, and its date was later referred to as "Black Sunday." Five Congressional Medals of Honor (CMOH) and numerous Distinguished Service Crosses (DSC's) were awarded to Operation Tidal Wave crew members.
Memory Lane
Thanks to Ken Foran for submitting the picture posted below. Carl Probst provided the list of names.
The following was written up by Howie Finnegan and used in a December issue of the Hicksville Illustrated News in 1995. Howie was a friend to the many athletes who played sport at Hicksville High. His reporting of their individual feats was always exciting and brought many memories into proper perspective.
The team shown below is the inaugural football team for Hicksville High from the Class of 1925. There are still many descendants. Family names have appeared again and again in athletic, civic, business, cultural and educational life over the 70-year period from 1925 to 1995. Members of the team were captain Walter Schlicting, Louis Millevolte, Thomas Morselli, Abraham Isrelowitz, Edward Donati, Stanley Bergold, Ralph Heberer and Joseph Baurer. The long passage of time has lost some first names. However, listed are last names and they include letter winners Heidtman, Guyer, Kearney , Heller and Graff. The team struggled in the opening season. Lone victory was recorded over Westbury 13-0. That ignited a bitter series between the two villages that for 31 years was acrimonious and colorful. Upon its termination in 1957, the volatile history was 15 wins for Hicksville 13 for Westbury and there were 3 ties. Losses were sustained at the hands of Manhasset 56-0, Great Neck 6-0, Friends Academy 6-0, Malverne 6-0 and Huntington 32-0. However, in the ensuing 1927-1928-1929 seasons, many players returned to help the black and orange rack up 16 wins, two defeats and two ties. The banner year was 1929 when the Comets record was 7-1.

The Land That Made Me, Me
Long ago and far away, in a land that time forgot,
Before the days of Dylan, or the dawn of Camelot.
There lived a race of innocents,
and they were you and me.
For Ike was in the White House, in that land where we were born,
Where navels were for oranges, and Peyton Place was porn.
We learned to gut a muffler, we washed our hair at dawn,
We spread our crinolines to dry in circles on the lawn.
We longed for love and romance, and waited for our Prince,
And Eddie Fisher married Liz, and no one's seen him since.
We danced to 'Little Darlin,' and sang to 'Stagger Lee'
And cried for Buddy Holly in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Only girls wore earrings then, and 3 was one too many,
And only boys wore flat-top cuts, except for Jean McKinney.
And only in our wildest dreams did we expect to see
A boy named George with Lipstick, in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We fell for Frankie Avalon, Annette was oh, so nice,
And when they made a movie, they never made it twice.
We didn't have a Star Trek Five, or Psycho Two and Three,
Or Rocky-Rambo Twenty in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Miss Kitty had a heart of gold, and Chester had a limp,
And Reagan was a Democrat whose co-star was a chimp.
We had a Mr.. Wizard, but not a Mr. T,
And Oprah couldn't talk yet, in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We had our share of heroes, we never thought they'd go,
At least not Bobby Darin, or Marilyn Monroe.
For youth was still eternal, and life was yet to be,
And Elvis was forever in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We'd never seen the rock band that was Grateful to be Dead,
And Airplanes weren't named Jefferson , and Zeppelins were not Led.
And Beatles lived in gardens then, and Monkees lived in trees,
Madonna was Mary in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We'd never heard of microwaves, or telephones in cars,
And babies might be bottle-fed, but they were not grown in jars.
And pumping iron got wrinkles out, and 'gay' meant fancy-free,
And dorms were never co-ed in the Land That Made Me, Me.
We hadn't seen enough of jets to talk about the lag,
And microchips were what was left at the bottom of the bag.
And hardware was a box of nails, and bytes came from a flea,
And rocket ships were fiction in the Land That Made Me, Me.
Buicks came with portholes, and sideshows came with freaks,
And bathing suits came big enough to cover both your cheeks.
And Coke came just in bottles, and skirts below the knee,
And Castro came to power near the Land That Made Me, Me.
We had no Crest with Fluoride, we had no Hill Street Blues,
We had no patterned pantyhose or Lipton herbal tea
Or prime-time ads for those dysfunctions
in the Land That Made Me, Me.
There were no golden arches, no Perrier to chill,
And fish were not called Wanda, and cats were not called Bill
And middle-aged was 35 and old was forty-three,
And ancient were our parents in the Land That Made Me, Me.
But all things have a season, or so we've heard them say,
And now instead of Maybelline, we swear by Retin-A.
They send us invitations to join AARP,
We've come a long way, baby, from the Land That Made Me, Me.
So now we face a brave new world in slightly larger jeans,
And wonder why they're using smaller print in magazines.
And we tell our children's children of the way it used to be,
Long ago and far away in the Land That Made Me, Me.
If you didn't grow up in the fifties,
you missed the greatest time in history,
Hope you enjoyed this read as much as I did.
