It's hard to fathom that a year has gone by since Pat Koziuk Driscoll passed away. It seems like just yesterday we were on the phone talking. Sometimes we were serious but most of the time it was giggles. Pat had a sense of humor despite her problems and she functioned well. Suffice it to say that she made the best of her situation. I know she loved to bake and we exchanged some recipes over the years.
I think Pat was the one that introduced me to the chocolate dump cake. She was precise in her recipes and enjoyed going from scratch. The dump cake would have been an enemy because all you do is dump everything, mix and bake.
I have many fond memories and thought I would share some photos of Pat, her family, her grandkids, friends and perhaps a school picture or two throughout the years.
I was saddened by the death of Dorothy Keegan and would like to extend my deepest sympathy to her family. Thank you all for the updates. You're all doing a fantastic job and I look forward to our newsletter each month.
Best Wishes,
Just a quick thank you for the Jacquie lawson birthday card. This is the same website I use to send for all my e-cards. It is very much appreciated.

Hi Bob,
Below is the return e-mail I received after you forwarded my address. Thought you would get a kick out of her message to me. We were 17 years old when we first met in the Brooklyn rink and if Mineola rink (where I skated out of) hadn't been torn down, I probably would not have met her. That 'Rambler' she mentions was black.....God awful car....but this has brought me so many great memories and she and I will definitely be in touch by phone. Thanks for all you do....

Subject: THAT LITTLE KID FROM EMPIRE!
H E L L O Lillian! A few years ago, I met a lady from Hicksville at church in West Palm Beach, Fl. I mentioned the fact that I skated at a rink in Brooklyn where a gal by the name of Lillian Manzo also skated, and who was also from Hicksville. Well it turns out that Bonnie Papes (married name) was in your class of 1961 and knows you. She lost contact with you, but she told me to e-mail the editor of HIX news.I told her that you skated pairs with Eddie Kline and that we drove up to Buffalo NY for states' meet with my mom, dad, Nick, Lilly, and you, in your RAMBLER. She seemed impressed at the detail I gave of you when I first mentioned you. I spoke of you and Marcus's venture at Pine Hallow and how we went out there for the opening. Well I'm happy I found you. Please let me know how you are doing and what you have done the last 48 years.
Hello Editors:
I have been receiving the newsletter and I enjoy it so much. It's a piece of the past and so much more. Reading it brings me a lot of pleasure because I always recognize at least one name. While I receive the newsletter I don't see myself on the list of alumni receiving the newsletter (probably because I did something wrong technically). Would you please add me to this list? Thank you.
Best

Hi Bob,
This was great, as I was just reading the April news letter and your message arrived. Love the newsletter. It really brings back memories! Any how, in response to your request, I live in Cathedral City ( Palm Springs ) California.

Hi Editors HixNews
Thanks for the birthday card. In your latest issue, you asked my brother, Jack Gould '60, to have me contact you. Here I am, although I was sort of out of touch for the past 3 months. How can I help? By the way, Jack is really looking forward to the 1960 reunion this year.

I'm just sitting here thinking. I sent Joyce to the Alzheimer's Center today. She has really adjusted to the trips to the center on Tuesday and Thursday. And the doctor gave her a new medication that I give her at bedtime that seems to help with her anxiety. Sending her off gives me a little break from the daily ritual. You get into a routine because they revert to being like a child and you know how it is with kids. She even got on the bus the other morning when I took Sarah to school all by herself. This morning, they picked up Ms. Joyce at 7:45. This is better for me. Otherwise I have to take Sarah to Pre-K, come back to the house and wait for the bus. The early pick up allowed me to go to the gym and walk my three miles after dropping Sarah at school. Then I had some chores to take care of. Like shopping for dinner. The four of us eat together in the evenings (Joyce, Dawn, Sarah and me). I'm the chef.
I enjoy my time without worry (when Joyce is at the center). Life is okay and you know, the end of the world is not tomorrow. Although, look at the movie 'When World's Collide." I saw this movie in the very early fifties. Went to the Meadowbrook movie theater on Hempstead Turnpike. Sat on the floor in front of the screen because the place was packed with kids. Was visting my aunt Agnes who had just purchased a Levit house on Friends Lane in Westbury. We, my family and me, were living in Bayside at the time. This was the very early fifties because we moved to Hicksville in 1955. I have the movie and it is one of my favorites.
My other really favorite movies:
- 'The Invasion of the Body Snatchers' (original version, not the remake with Kevin McCarthy and Dana Wynter)
- 'The Final Countdown' (Kirk Douglas, Martin Sheen)
- 'The Day the Earth Stood Still (original with Michael Rennie and Pat Neal and little Bud from Father Knows Best).
- 'The Natural' (Robert Redford and Glenn Close)
- 'Dirty Dancing' (Patrick Swayze and Jennifer Gray)
- 'Cocoon' (Wilfred Brimley, Don Ameche, Jessica Tandy, Brian Dennihy)
- 'On The Beach' (Gregory Peck, Ava Gardner, Anthony Perkins and Fred Astaire)
I can sit down in a heartbeat and watch any one over again.
Buffalo Bob Casale '61
Bob,
Another great issue! I was sorry to hear of the passing of Mr. Evers. He was my 7th grade homeroom and history teacher when I first entered the Hicksville School System in 1956. During my parents first visit one night that fall for a parents night, he told my Dad that I was a much better student than I was showing. At the time, I was being distracted by my latest crush! Needless to say, my Dad set me straight in a hurry, if you know how that's done in a traditional Italian household! I got nothing but good grades after that and while I was upset with Mr. Evers for telling on me, I often looked back and felt he set me on the right path!
I was also glad to see Hugh Hansen's then and now picture. Hugh was my pledge son in the Fiji Fraternity at Rutgers, and I've lost touch with him. Please send him my email address so he can possibly drop me a note, since I know by policy you cannot give me his email without his permission.
Thanks!

Last Sunday night when I arrived at the hotel, there was a group of about 15-20 people hanging out and talking animatedly. I asked the third shift girl what the party was about? She said they all were from the same neighborhood, but didn't know they were all staying at the hotel! I could tell the LI accent, and found they were all from Levittown! Small world! They also said taxes are now over $9K, more than the original Levitt Cape cost! Taxes in Wantagh are over $14K...OUCH! On average, about one third of the hotel guests(Here in Charlotte) are from NY, and most of that NY group are from LI.

What hotel??? Are you in Lancaster at the showing of your art? Did any of the group indicate what year they graduated or was it multi year?
buffalo bob
-------------------------------------
I live in Lancaster, SC, just south of Charlotte, NC, right on the SC/NC border, and about 25 minutes from South Charlotte. I work 2 nights a week as the night auditor for the Ballantyne Courtyard. The group was an assorted group of 40-50 year olds who all came from the Newbridge Rd side of Levittown. An awful lot of people on LI are cashing out and heading South. I have a long chat every Sunday night with Ralph, a retired NYC fireman who also owned an Italian restaurant in Brooklyn, who works as security in the hotel complex. Ballantyne is an expensive area of South Charlotte, where homes run in the $1+Mil, and up. Tenants in the Ballantyne Corp park include BOA, ESPN, Lending tree, SPX, and many medical, financial, and insurance companies. My art is on display at the Springs House, home of the Lancaster County Council of the Arts. Springs Industries (Spring Maid sheets, towels, etc) used to be the largest employer in Lancaster until the US lost out to cheap foreign companies. Now most of Springs is closed except for skeletal operations.

Hi,
I hope you all receive many Blessings this Holy Easter weekend. I was just reading the April Hix News and saw something about Jeanne Kranz looking for Rose Lacognata. I have been looking for both of them and also for Brenda Wintersailor-Burke and Richard Magill. If you know of there whereabouts, please let me know. I would love to re-connect with them. Please give them my email address if you can. Thanks so much for your help, and mostly for the newletter. I love reading it and seeing what's new with everyone. Take care and God Bless You.

We have featured Ted's ride on the home page. His effort is designed to raise money for our vets who are returning from combat in Iraq and Afghanistan through VetDogs of America. The Home Page emphasizes where to make contributions and gives some background of VetDogs. This page is intended to introduce you to the other riders who will be participating in this wonderful endeavor. You can track Ted on his blog tedswedalla.com.
Hi guys,
Thank you for all of your effort to bring the newsletter to us each month. I'm living in Florida now and I look forward to the updates the newsletter brings. My name is Jim Gorman, class of 1966, and I recognized an old friend of mine who was listed as a new reader in this month's newsletter. His name is Bob Leo and we did some guitar work together years ago, and I've always wanted to reconnect. Please kindly forward my email address to bob and let him know. Thanks again for a great job.

Dear Bob Leo,
We are forwarding to you an email we received from Jim Gorman (Class of 1966) who would like to re-establish contact with you. His email is included below (email hidden).

I would like to thank the editors for an awesome job keeping HixNews alive. I also want to thank Ken Arnold for posting the picture of the Dynamics at Redeemer Church. It brought back some really nice memories of playing with the band. Funny that I don't remember the sax player. I can only remember the band with John Barcelona on horn and Vic Olsen on drums. Hey Ken, give me a shout.

Hi,
Could you tell me why I can't copy some of the info contained in a newsletter? I have a friend who is a HHS graduate but has no computer. They live a distance away from me and I would like to send/give them some of HHS news. I can't remember, at the moment, what year they graduated.... his name is James Smith......said he was very forgettable during his high school years, except for the administration who once mentioned that they could play a game of cards with the 52 "cut" notices he had. He married Francine who graduated a year after him (don't know her maiden name). The next time I speak with them I'll fill in the blanks, but in the meantime, why can't I copy HixNews info?

I have attached a couple of photos my daughter took of me at my artist's reception at the start of the exhibition of my paintings. The first is of me with a glass of wine in front of my painting, "Poppy Madness", and the other is of me in front of some of my portraits. I exhibited 5 portraits, 5 large landscapes, and 20 medium landscapes, all oil paintings on canvas, and there was a great response from a lot of people. My exhibit was at the Springs house, home of the Lancaster County Council of the Arts, and was the first stop of six for the Spring Arts Walk. My paintings will remain on exhibit through the month of April.

Hi Bob,
Today (4/11/10) I stopped in at the mini reunion at Smokey Bones Steak House. Dennis Naso had contacted me several weeks ago about the reunion. Yesterday (4/10/10), Dennis, his wife and Diana Urena came to a Fundraiser for my 32-year-old son, who had sudden end stage renal failure just 6 weeks ago. I was so touched by the fact that they came to the fundraiser, that I had to make the effort to get to the mini reunion. I couldn't get there until the end. This is the first thing that I've attended, after ALL these years and I'm sorry that I only had the last half hour to meet just a few of the 40 people who had been there. It was fun to connect with faces from the past and I promise that will try to get to future events.
Please put me on the mail list for the newsletter. Olivia (Lepis) Schmidt sent me the link to the April newsletter....It's great! I retired 3 years ago from Long Island Business News, located in Ronkonkoma, LI. I was the Production Manager for the Nassau Lawyer newspaper and was also the Production Manager for Special Publications. I really appreciate the work that you do.
I would like to give you 2 names to add to the In Memoriam section: Judy (Tisdale -class of 1961) Rizzo passed away 7/30/06. We were friends from 5th grade through high school, and then we lost touch. Then in 1966 Judy and her husband Dave McCoy (class of 1960) moved into a house, around the corner from me. They divorced years later and she married Mario Rizzo (not from HHS). I'm not sure of the dates, but Dave moved south and died several years before Judy died. Judy was a good friend and I miss her.
I was so surprised to read of all our classmates who have passed. It saddens me to see such a long list.
At the same time, because of the mini reunion, I now look forward to meeting you and many other former classmates at the next reunion.
Keep up the good work.

Dear Class of 1961 Alumni
I just wanted to advise those who couldn't attend the mini reunion set up by Dennis Naso of those who showed up...
Some men brought their wives. Louse Clark had her husband, Bill Ramos, from the class of 60 grace our presence. It was a great moment in time. As if the Earth stood still. It was refreshing to see faces from the past. Looking with anticipation to the 50th next year. Fifty Years. It isn't possible but it happened!!!

Hi, Jean
Thanks for (re)signing me up for the newsletter. Somehow I stopped getting notification and, as they say, "out of sight, out of mind". I'm still on the birthday list (April 11--thanks for the card). This is what made me realize I was no longer being notified of the Newsletter. 'Capone' is my maiden name (took it back after the divorce). I still live in NY-Freeport. If there is a new e-mail address for HixNews I should add to my address book, please let me know.
Thanks

Hi, Diane:
I just wanted to send you a quick e-mail to acknowledge your response. Yes, I do see you on the April birthday list. All I did was add that you lived on L.I. Hope you had a nice birthday yesterday.
As to why you no longer receive notification of the Newsletter, did you change your e-mail address and not notify us? If not, I can only assume that when we changed the notification system many months ago, you might have gotten lost in the shuffle or signed up for the wrong group. I am sending a copy of this e-mail to Henry Lichtenstein. He keeps track of the groups and will know which group you are signed up with. You should receive an e-mail each month stating that the Newsletter is ready to read and giving you a link to connect to it. You can always go to www.hixnews.com to read the latest Newsletter at any time.
Don't you worry; we'll get you squared away. In the meantime, just enjoy the Newsletter!

As part of the June 5th class of 1960 reunion, the Committee is tentatively planning a tour of Hicksville High School. The principal of HHS has asked us to provide an approximate number of attendees. The purpose of this e-mail is to determine if there is any interest in a tour. If there's enough interest, the tour will take place in the early afternoon of June 5th Transportation is on your own. If you are interested in taking the tour, please respond to one of us by e-mail. (Please don't respond to the hixclass60 email address.)

Hi guys,
Hope all is well. We had a mini-reunion last weekend. About 40 people - great fun. I am going to Naso's house Monday to help him label and distribute the pictures. I was looking at HixNews and although I have blanked out any athletic memories from my mind (I sucked), I think the person second from the right standing is me. Please note that the left ear is bigger than the right. If you look at my current facebook picture, the ear is definitely mine. Let me know if anyone else claims the rest of that cute face. It is suggested that the pictures are from the late 50's but if it's me it would have to be 53-54. Let me know what you think. It also might be Norman Samburg sitting center.
Thanks, as always for your efforts. Lew - on LI - still working but happy!

Hi all,
Just a quick note to let you know that I've done another music video. Although it's not my kind of music, the kids evidently like it because it was voted #1 music video downloaded to I Tunes for the week of April 19 by NBC/TV News. The band is MGMT/Flash Delirium. If you'd like to see the video,(and me), go to www.whoismgmt.com/us/home. Go to the lower right corner and press play (and hold your ears!) Hope everyone is happy and healthy,

This may go down as one of our best name addition month's ever!! I'm getting new names from many fronts, all happening while I'm not home, which, of course is Murphy's Law. I've been away since April 8th and was supposed to be home last Sunday, but have stayed on in Phoenix as my 90 year old mother is close to God's call and my 92 year old father is understandably not handling it well. It's a very trying and draining time for all of us, but we know we will celebrate their long and good lives once they pass on.
Should I remain away, I have what I need to give you the update for the May 1 issue. I just need to find the time to do it.
Best regards,
Joe Carfora '62

Editor Note: all the editors send their warmest regards to your parents. It sounds as if they've had a good life. We know they had the nicest children and the apple doesn't fall far from the tree.
Hi Jean,
Nice to hear from you. My birthday is August 18th. I am married to Margaret and we were married on September 5th. We are currently living in Florida. I really enjoy the HixNews website. Thanks for all your effort to keep Hicksville alive in the memory of us all who no longer live there. It warms my heart.
Thanks again

Mini Reunion for the class of 1964
Just wanted to share that long time friends, from even before high school, had a mini reunion.. Johanna LoGerfo Dyckman, Linda Erwin, Valerie Clemens and Suzanne Pankoff all from the class of 1964 and me, Maureen Uss got together. Linda, Suzanne and I have known each other since fifth grade at Burns Avenue School. Our get together included a wonderful dinner mixed with talk, talk and talk. And, we Talked!!! Each individual memory triggered another memory...and we laughed, laughed and laughed. Did I tell you we also laughed??? We have not seen each other in years but it was like no time had passed at all. Will have pictures soon.

All,
First I wish to thank you all for the recent birthday card. You have all been doing a great job and there are many of us who truly appreciate your efforts. I have been keeping a class of '67 list since our last reunion, including a listing of those that we know have passed away. I have attached a spreadsheet that lists our deceased members. I have updated it from the info you currently have in the newsletter. You might use this file to update the In Memoriam list for the Class of 67. It's unfortunate how many of the letters you get are to let you know that someone from HHS has passed on, but I had to add one more.

They shall grow not old, as we that are left grow old;
Age shall not weary them, nor the years condemn.
At the going down of the sun and in the morning
We will remember them.

Three things...just saw on your profile at Facebook that you were a marine. Joe Carfora from the class of 1962 is going to contact you for info. He will explain. I saw a reference to Carole and went to a photographic site...I think she is your daughter. The third thing is a picture says "waiting for the ceremony to begin." You've had a very interesting life. Why not do a bio sketch that can go on our bio page at the newsletter.

My daughter Carol is a photographer. She shoots family photos, weddings, and recently has been hired to shoot car races.
Below is my daughter Carol and me at a 2006 car show in So. Md. My son-in-law and grandson refurbish old cars as a hobby, They have several rebuilt vehicles to include their trophy winners - a 34 Ford 3 window coupe, a 54 Ford Explorer pick up, and a 56 Ford Fairlane
Below, the family is "Waiting for the ceremony to begin!"
This was a graduation ceremony for South Maryland Corrections Officers. My grandson and my granddaughter's husband graduated in the same class.
The grandson was the youngest person to be accepted as a Corrections Officer in the history of Maryland. An interesting thing...he was too young to be a police officer. My son took the picture.
