To Whom It May Concern:

Recently, Patricia Driscoll a resident of Inverness, was brought to your facility for comfort and care. Her prognosis was not good and, eventually, she passed away. Pat, as we lovingly referred to her, was responsible for bringing much joy to many friends who knew her. Her family, who mourn her passing deeply, cherished her. They realize the care you provided in her final days was awesome and, although that is your ultimate responsibility, the reaction to her demise was beyond expectation.

It is appropriate to mention that Pat was an editor of the Hicksville High School Newsletter (Hicksville, New York) that is published on a monthly basis. What began as a typed newsletter, sent to several hundred alumni via email, evolved into a professionally produced newsletter that is published to a website each month and viewed by almost two thousand former students. The newsletter can be viewed at https://hixnews.com

The newsletter is published 'Free' and is supported by our many alumni through contributions that help defray expense. The newsletter was started by Pat and she considered the newsletter 'her baby!' While in your care, she continued to email alumni and put together the many pieces of correspondence that are the bulk of the publication.

The family has asked for friends to donate to your facility in lieu of the traditional means of showing respect, flowers, mass cards, etc. I am forwarding a check to your facility that is not only a gift of the Newsletter Staff, but is a contribution, too, from all Hicksville alumni from the 1930s to 2009 who loved Pat Driscoll.

Thanks so much for providing comfort to Pat in her final days.

Sincerely yours,
Robert Casale

PRESS RELEASE - Reunion of West Point's first rock group is a Long Island story

Two inaugural inductees to the Long Island Music Hall of Fame along with two of their Hicksville High School classmates are being featured at the 30th annual USMA Band Alumni Association concert at West Point on Sunday June 28.

Tommy Sullivan and his ex-wife Carolyn Imbrie were inducted into the LIMHOF as original members of Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge...but the band Sullivan led just prior to the Bridge has a largely unknown place in pop music and military history.

Tommy's LI band the Nite-Riders broke up when he enlisted in the Army in 1965 to become a member of the West Point Band. But a year later, after Jim Walker and Bill Jordan had been drafted and Vietnam-bound, Tommy was tapped to form the first Rock group in the Army, whereupon he floated the idea of providing an instant rock group to the Cadets if his high school buddies/ex- band mates could be reassigned to West Point.

The Commanding Officer pulled some strings and made it happen... and West Point got their instant rock group-which was rounded out by Tommy's then fianc'e Carolyn Wood.

The group kicked into high gear shortly after Tommy and Carolyn's wedding in 1966. The re-formed Nite-Riders were a huge hit not only at Cadet dances, but at the Officer's Clubs at West Point and Stewart Air Force Base as well, and were featured with the entire Concert Band at a summer concert at Trophy Point in 1967...the site of this summer's reunion concert.

From West Point to the Ed Sullivan Show

Upon leaving the West Point Band in February 1968, Tommy and Carolyn Sullivan returned to Long Island to help start a new group with other former Hicksville classmates- which quickly evolved into the enduringly popular recording group Johnny Maestro & the Brooklyn Bridge.

Less than nine months after returning to civilian life, Tommy and Carolyn and four other Hicksville classmates appeared as members of the Bridge on the Ed Sullivan Show to launch a career which included gold records and appearances on every other major TV show and live performance venue.

Nite-Riders to ride again

Reuniting the original USMA Nite-Riders onstage together for the first time in over forty years, the group will be augmented by a horn section consisting of several other USMA Band alumnus for a performance which promises to be historic and electric!

Coincidentally, Tommy Sullivan has just completed his first book, Rockin' the Long Grey Line: the rock & roll Infiltration of West Point During the Vietnam War, which chronicles the entire Nite-Riders/West Point experience...including some great photos from the period which were lovingly preserved and generously provided by Carolyn Imbrie.

The big show is happening Sunday June 28th 2009 at West Point's Trophy Point (Eisenhower Hall in case of inclement weather) starting at 6 PM. The concert is free, and open to the public.

To all HixNews subscribers

We are interested in adding an art page to the newsletter. As we seem to have quite a few subscribers who are involved in the arts, we thought that this might be a good venue to showcase their endeavors. It is envisioned that we would showcase one or two artists per month depending on the response.
This would not be restricted to painting, but would encompass pottery, wood carvings, sculptures and any craft that could be considered an Art form. It can be works from the part time hobbyist, to those actively pursuing a career in the Arts. We are interested in hearing from you and any ideas that you have on the way it should be presented.

For submissions, we would like a few photos of a piece of work that you would like to share, plus any information about the piece, as well as any biographical info on your involvement with that art form.

The Newsletter

I lost a Good friend this month!I lost a Good friend this month

Pat Driscoll had a great many internet friends as well as friends away from the internet! Pat had a way of connecting with people that made them want to stay in close contact with her, and most found her emails to be both encouraging and relaxing.

I began to exchange emails with Pat several years ago after I joined the newsletter as a contributing editor, and we continued to exchange emails several times a week right up through her admittance into a hospice just weeks before she passed. Most were personal and about our lives and families, along with cooking, recipes, and of course the weather. She would relate the goings on of her kids, grandkids and also her sisters, all of whom she was very devoted to.

She was there giving me encouragement as I went from researching and selling 19th century paintings, and on to taking an oil painting class to 'See how it was actually done', and then more encouragement as I found I liked painting and began to follow that path as an artist!

We chatted on the phone a few times, but preferred to keep up via emails, which gave you time to collect your thoughts.

Not talking in person, it was easy to forget Pat's ongoing struggles with breathing due to Emphysema, but she needed oxygen most of the time and when she went around her condo complex, it was usually on her 'Scooter'. Pat was the one who edited and transferred into Publisher, most of the submissions and letters that were sent into the newsletter, and she continued working on the newsletter while in the hospice, right up until she was just too tired to continue on!

As her daughter Cathy said, 'The newsletter was her other child'!

How she managed to keep working on the newsletter and yet keep exchanging emails with her many friends while she was so fatigued, is truly amazing!

So yes, I lost a good friend this month, and so did the other editors and a great many readers!

She will be sorely missed!

BoB Gillette

Hi Friends,

I just uploaded two videos of Dos Américas Guitar Duo performing "Hanging Tree" and "Grave of Charlie Reynolds" from my "Shavano Suite". You can view these by logging onto YouTube and typing "jimbosseguitar" into the search box.

If you like them, please take a moment to rate them and/or make comments. Good ratings and comments help promote my music and Dos Américas.I hope to upload several more videos soon. I am just waiting on permission from the composers. I also hope to complete the editing on a new Dos Américas CD within a month or two. I will keep you informed but if you wish to no longer receive e-mails, just let me know and I will remove you from my list.

Hi! I went to the Martin Viette Nursery fundraiser for the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network) this winter. The INN is one of LI's premier mainly volunteer-based organizations that help our neighbors in need with respect and dignity.

One of their functions is to operate 19 soup kitchens. During the presentation they mentioned how much the clients love to eat foods that came from local fresh produce flavored with fresh herbs.

I grow my own veggie and herb patch and volunteered some of mine. The INN representative said that they would even come by weekly to pick it up.

I was wondering if any our alumni reside in Hicksville and would consider joining me in this garden plan of mine to grow a sharing is caring garden.

I can be contacted via email at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. For those of us alumnus who live scattered throughout the US maybe they will join me with this project in their own community. It can be as simple as dedicated a row to the INN, or one extra plant, or planter. Iit can be as expansive or limited as you desire. For those avid gardeners it will be easy and for those who never did this before it can be an exciting project when you are paying it forward. A little contribution can make a great difference in the lives of our neighbors (men, women and children) who go to bed with a hungry belly.

Thank you.

Hicksville Vietnam War Era Veterans Memorial

We picked up a lot of momentum after the May issue of HixNews and need to avoid a "June swoon" in our quest for names! When the May issue was published our list of names totaled at 222. We added 63 names in May, one of our best months ever, for a new total of 285!!Additional momentum has been gained by the addition of Walt Schmidt and Joe Ingino to our Project Team. Walt came on board in late April, graduated from HHS in 1965 and is the Town of Oyster Bay's Veteran's Affairs Officer. Joe is a 1967 grad of HHS and is very active in Veteran's Affairs throughout Nassau County and Long Island. In addition, Ken Strafer, HHS 1962 and founder of this effort, visited Hicksville in late May to begin reviewing potential sites for the Memorial. On a sad note, we want to extend our sympathy to the Family of Pat Driscoll. She will not only be missed as a founding editor of HixNews, but as a very valuable contributor to this Project Team. She believed in our desire to recognize those who served during the Vietnam War Era and made tireless contributions and suggestions to us almost until the end. She will be sorely missed. For your part as a reader of HixNews and former alumnus of HHS, please see our update in the Veterans Section of this newsletter. After reviewing the qualifications for the Memorial, please review the list of names and let us know who we have yet to find. While we have gained significant momentum, we still have a long way to go, since we estimate there could be between 2-3 thousand veterans with ties to Hicksville who served in our Armed Forces around the world during the Vietnam Era.

Joe Carfora HHS 1962

Pat,

I have sadly neglected to tell you how great it is to see that missing list for the class of 1959 reunion displayed so prominently. Hope to get some solid response from siblings and friends that will help with our reunion scheduled for October. We did just find another classmate but it was through face book.

Carl Probst

Hi Joe (Carfora)

After looking at the list (great job, by the way) I did not see Steve Walsh's name there. If I remember correctly, Steve was a helicopter pilot in the Marines. Graduated in "65 with me. Also on list is Mike Cullen, he is class of '65 also. Wilber Grant, I think is '64 along with "Skip" Huber. Jimmy Dykman was US Army RVN, class of '66 injured in Nam. Kenny Payne, class of "66 was US Army RVN (unfortunately, passed away some years back). Dan Rysanek was US Army RVN. We were all part of the Mid Island Bowl crowd. Some of them belong with me at the Hicksville VFW. The rest, we get together a couple of times a year.

I was once again elected Commander of the Hicksville VFW for the 2009 - 2010 year. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know. Next year, I will be running Hicksville's Memorial Day Parade.

I was delighted to get the May HixNews; I thoroughly enjoy going down memory lane with each new edition. Keep up the fine work! I saw the note from Hank and Rene Cierski and it brought back some great memories - fishing in Oyster Bay, the green 49 Chevy, BOTGL, etc. I still stay in touch with Wheel (Bill Dylewski) on a somewhat regular but infrequent basis. I would love to hear more about Hank and his family; does he have a contact email? Mine is This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Hi Pat,

Thanks again.

I was really sad to read the obituary on Charlie Gouse. I would like to share a memory with you. The year was about 1946 or 47 when we played hooky from school together and we took the LIRR to the city. I sat and waited while Charlie took the exam was admitted to the American Federation of Musicians. I don't remember what else we did that day, but I was really excited about being friends with a professional musician. Please extend my sympathy to his family on their loss.

Hi

I was a teacher at Hicksville High School from 1966-1995 and am at the bottom of the list of students with their graduation years where you list the teachers. My name is misspelled. It is Deutscher, not Deuscher. Also, it is now Deutscher-Leshin. I live in FL and NY. Please make the correction.

Thank you.

Hi Editors,

Thanks for continuing to publish hix news; it brings back many fond memories even though it is skewed toward the "younger" set. What's the problem with the members of my class (1950)? Can't believe they are technologically illiterate; hence there must be a way to reach them as a group and pique their collective interest.

Is there, somewhere, a master list that includes e-mail addresses? I'm willing to reach out if someone can point the way. Noticed that my listing says class of 1954 instead of 1950. (Must have give you my college year in error). Please do an update. Also please add Gerald Cohen, friend of 1950 NYC.

Friendship comes full circle. In the early 60's, a group of Hicksville High School gals formed a high school sorority. Many good times were shared, but after graduation in 1963, everyone went their separate way. None of them forgot about each other though. Mary Anne Voss and Joan Volonino kept in touch until around 1973, then they lost touch. Classmates. com put them back in touch in 2003, and they got together in New York City in 2004 and 2006 and renewed their friendship. They decided to see if they could contact Leslie Chanin through Classmates.com and were successful. Mary Anne and Leslie found they lived only 3 hours apart in Florida. They got together for what turned out to be a very long lunch indeed. After the 3 were reunited, they decided to make the reunion complete and look for Marie Vanacore. Low and behold, they found her in Bethpage, New York. The "Fab 4 - Marie, Mary Anne, Leslie, and Joan - met for a nostalgic reunion in October, 2008, in Delray Beach, Florida. It is hard to believe that 4 people could just pick up where they left off - but so they did. A marathon 4 days of nonstop conversation and laughter took place, as every attempt was made to catch up on 45 years gone by. Here is the scoop on where they are now. Mary Anne lives in Oldsmar, Florida, just outside of Tampa, with her 16-year-old daughter, Mary Celeste. Joan lives in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, with her husband, Lee, and her son, Brad, 22. Marie, as we mentioned, lives in Bethpage, New York. She has a son who is 36 and a daughter a few years younger who has given her 2 grandsons with another grandchild on the way. Leslie is married, has 1 son who is 32, and lives in Delray Beach, Florida. The girls have lots more to talk about and are meeting again in October, 2009 in Marco Island, Florida. This is a sentimental journey that none of us would have missed out on. Those innocent Hicksville High School students grew up to be wonderful women who have all made a contribution in their lives. We hope to continue our "reunions" every year, God willing. We are all so proud to know each other and consider each other - my friends, my sisters. We will report in from Marco Island by the end of 2009.

Joan Volonino Leslie Chanin Marie Vanacore Mary Anne Voss

Dear Hixnews,

Just one correction on the spelling of my maiden name,. It is spelled VERRALL, NOT VERALL. Just thought I would let you know. Also I read what Carl Probst (59) wrote about Fairway Farms. When I moved to Hicksville ,I was eight years old. My Father worked for Fairway Farms as a milkman. Many memories came back to me . I remember visiting the farm and going into the barn, and getting squirted with milk, I was horrified. Also my father delivered milk in our neighborhood, and my Mom and I rode in the truck, when we had to go down -town Hicksville. WeE lived in the Zelda Park Homes off Bethpage Road (behind Sears).

I left Hicksville in 1962, and after eight years, My husband and I moved back in 1970, I was upset about the changes that were made, like the elevated railroad, and no more stores in the town. Oh well, what was I to do, Progress was in the making. I still go to the Sweet Shop and meet a few Alumni . I remember the Sweet Shop was across the street and after Football home games, We would head for the sweet Shop for an English Muffin and a coke. My children went to Hicksville schools , and what memories I had when I went to High School functions for my Children. Nancy (Verrall) Pedicini, class of 1960.

The story about the fall of Saigon brought back many memories. My late husband, Roy, was stationed in Subic Bay, Philippines from 1973-1976 and as with all his many duty stations, I was with him. It was a wonderful experience to live there. I was the president of the base Navy Wives Club of America when the call came out for volunteers to help with the boatloads of Vietnamese that would be coming in. They were having them offloaded onto an island off the main base, I believe it was called Grande Island. It was a sight to behold when a ship (not a Navy ship) carrying many, many more people than it was made to carry came into sight. They covered every possible square inch of that ship and to look at it you would have thought it was about to roll over at any minute. We were put in charge of the children. They came to us filthy and lice infested from the long trip, hungry, thirsty, and completely bewildered from something they could never understand at their young ages. They were afraid of the showers, so we went right into the showers with them - washing them down, shampooing their hair, and soothing them with gentle words they never understood but I hope translated our love and concern for them. Other women took them from there to dry them off and provide them with clothes that had been collected from our own children. They were then taken from us to be given a meal and a place to lay their heads. I often wonder where they went after leaving Subic Bay and just pray that they traveled on to a much brighter future.

Hi everyone,

A film I was featured in called, "In the Bag," will be competing on the WNET/Thirteen Website, www.reel13.org with three other films starting Sunday, May 31st through Thursday, June 4th. The film that wins with the most online votes will then be broadcast on WNET Channel 13 on Saturday, June 6 at 10:45pm. Please check out the film online and, if you enjoy it, please vote for "In the Bag." It would be so cool to see the film broadcast on PBS Channel 13!

Many thanks,
Harri Molese, 1956

Hello,

I saw pictures of your class of 67 reunion. Could you tell me how to get in touch with Judy Lilienthal-Coyle, or let her know how to get in touch with me? We were girl friends when we were teenagers, and I'd love to get back in touch.

Thank you.

Dear Editors

I want to correct a statement I made in my recent letter to the HixNews. It was Dave McCoy who pulled up that football player's mask, not Dave McKinstry. Anyway, McKinstry's name was James (Jim), not Dave.

I'm wondering if anyone knows Barbara Ann Cohen? That was her name in high school-she may have a married name now! She was a really fine friend, then.

Also, does anyone know John Fort, George Perifimos, Artie Romeo, Billy Suppa? So many great people in our class.

Our 50th anniversary is next year. Is there going to be a reunion?

Bob

I have been looking at the 50th Reunion site for a while and spotted your name. I lived in Orlando Fl for 16 years and was Deputy Director of a large non-profit organization when 911 happened. I knew right then that I would have to move back to LI right away. All my family...mother, 3 children and now 9 grandchildren were here. I have lived here for 7 yrs working part time at the Riverhead Home Depot. (I use to tell everyone I would work there when I retired.) My mom passed away but I had 5 good years with her taking care of her...and now make every communion, birthday and holiday party with my family and x wife Maureen. Life is good and I had decided I wanted to finally make 1 reunion. God knows if I will make any more! As all of the names started flooding my brain I went to find my yearbook. As luck would have it I found 58'. I am not sure I ever had 59 because I left for the marines as soon as school let out. Will tell you the rest when I see you. My son Kevin is getting married on October 4th so it will be hard but I am determined to make it. Will see you then I hope.

Michael

I was saddened to read Charles F. Gouse obituary.

I was a trumpet student of Mr. Gouse in Hicksville in the late '50s. I've applied a life lesson from studying trumpet with Mr. Gouse. Charlie told me I was playing too loud and when the music would require me to play more loudly I would not be able to play more loudly if I was already loud. It took awhile to realize the importance of this simple technique in everyday life. Speak in a moderate voice always so when it might be necessary to crescendo you would have someplace to go and that would make a greater impression. I was fortunate to have related this story back to Mr. Gouse in a telephone conversation a few years ago. One of the greatest things a person can impart is a life lesson. I feel grateful to have studied with Mr. Gouse and apply his teaching beyond trumpet.

Hey, I was very sorry to hear about Pat. It seemed rather sudden to me, and took me completely by surprise.

On a different note entirely, I thought you might want to know and/or announce that as an artist I have a new and also my first ever gallery on the http://yessy.com site. To access my paintings simply type California Dreamers in the search box. And no, I don't think you guys are fools, I'm just sayin'. Enjoy your days.

As always, Love and hope,

Hi from Lizz Munkel Lester class of "57" .. I live at 746 Bland Point Road, Deltaville, Virginia, 23043.. My name was on your list but the state was not .. I've always used two z's on Lizz also.

Thanks for always doing such a wonderful Job .on the newsletter. My heart is saddened for all of you that worked closely with Pat .. I'm sure the news shocked everyone .. I hope there will be a wonderful story about her life in our newsletter from those who knew her well.

Sincerely Lizz Munker Lester "57"

Thanks for the birthday card. My SS check-in July? will be "even more gooder"!! Could you, or whoever handles this specific part of Hixnews, take care of a minor change that needs to be made? I moved back to the state of NY in Feb of 2008-after living in North Carolina for 5 years. I believe it's on the list of birthdays, not the scrolling one-but the one in the hixnews for the month itself...in parentheses after my name there is still a NC whereas it should be an NY. That could lead to confusion if, for instance, someone has a check for a million dollars made out to me and they're trying to locate me near the Outer Banks-while I'm sitting here in Binghamton, NY...with the sun actually out.

Thanks loads. I appreciate your time. State Farm-who I have for car insurance and renters' insurance called yesterday to wish me a happy birthday. That's a new one. I'd rather they reduce their rates.

Stay cool, (in the hip sense)

Dear editors,

I was deeply saddened by the death of Pat Driscoll. We attended classes together from kindergarten to graduation in 1956. We were not best friends but I always thought of Pat as a sweet, very smart and lovely person. I really got to know her again through the internet. I know I will miss her notes and cards and hearing about her grandchildren and her life in Florida. I intend to send a photo and information about how I knew Pat to her daughters as they requested. She was a blessing to her family and the newsletter and also to me and she will be sorely missed.

Sincerely,
Suzanne (Garrett) Cullen -56

Bob:

Susan and I are so saddened by the passing of Pat Driscoll. We were actually family by marriage...my brother Neil was married to her late sister Flossi...

p.s. my nephew Danny was very close to Pat.

Flag Day, June 14, 2009..

Annual Pause for the Pledge of Allegiance

At 7:00 p.m. (EDT) on Flag Day, June 14, Americans all across the nation will pause to recite the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag. While most of us know the words of the Pledge, there are a large number who do not know of its origin.

Mr. Francis Bellamy, an ordained minister of Rome, New York is credited with the authorship of the original Pledge. It was he, who on the eve of the 400th Anniversary of the discovery of America, initiated a campaign for the establishment of a national holiday on October 12, . . . to celebrate the day on which Columbus discovered America. In his concept, he envisioned that flags should be flown over every school-house and public building from coast to coast.

In the material which he nationally circulated, he wrote, 'Let the flag float over every school-house in the land and the exercise be such as shall impress upon our youth the patriotic duty of citizenship.' He also included the original 23 words of the Pledge which he had developed. 'I pledge allegiance to my flag and the Republic for which it stands, one nation indivisible, with liberty and justice for all.' Thus it was that on Columbus Day in October 1892, the Pledge of Allegiance was repeated by more than 12 million public school children in every state in the union. The wording of the Pledge has been modified three times. In 1923, the words 'the flag of the United States' were substituted for 'my flag.' In 1924, 'of America' were added. On Flag Day 1954, the words 'under God' became a part of the Pledge. Thus the 23 words have become 31 words.

By a Joint Resolution on June 9, 1966, the Congress requested the President to issue annually a proclamation designating the week in which June 14 occurs as National Flag Week and calling upon citizens of the United States to display the flag during that week.

The idea of the annual PAUSE FOR THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE originated in 1980 at the Star-Spangled Banner Flag House in Baltimore, Maryland. Since then the concept has swept across the country in a grassroots movement supported by a broad spectrum of individuals, organizations, and businesses.

The National Flag Day Foundation. Inc. was created in 1982 'to conduct educational programs throughout the United States in promotion of National Flag Day and to encourage national patriotism by promotion of the PAUSE FOR THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE.'

On June 20, 1985, the Ninety-Ninth Congress passed and President Reagan signed Public Law 99-54 recognizing the PAUSE FOR THE PLEDGE OF ALLEGIANCE as part of National Flag Day activities. It is an invitation urging all Americans to participate on June 14, 7:00 p.m. (EDT) in reciting the Pledge of Allegiance. The effect of this simple ceremony, which transcends age, race, religion, national origin, political and geographic differences, is a stimulating patriotic experience at home and a sign of unity abroad.

Hicksville Vietnam War Era Proposed Memorial

An effort has been underway for quite some time with hopes of dedicating a Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial Monument at a frequently visited site in Hicksville (such as Hicksville High, Kennedy Plaza, etc.) sometime in 2010 once we have exhausted the possibility of finding Veterans who served on active duty during that era and once we have the approval from the necessary Hicksville, Town of Oyster Bay and Nassau County authorities, as needed, to do so.

Our List of Names of those who served has expanded through time to time announcements in HixNews.  When the list was published in the March Issue of HixNews, we had about 150 names.  By the May 1 issue, we had 222 names and in May alone we've added an additional 63 names to bring our total to 285!  Momentum is building thanks to the help of HixNews and its many readers.  As a result, we will now be publishing the up to date list each month in HixNews.

A path of broader distribution in our search for the names of people who qualify to be included in the Memorial is also helping.  We are now using the Class of '59 website for this purpose and have approached the reunion leaders of other classes for help in identifying people not already included on our current list.  We know that we have still only scratched the surface so far.

To qualify for the Memorial, a person must have been on active duty in one of our Armed Forces during the Vietnam Era, but did not necessarily have to serve in Vietnam, because by being in the service at that time a person was exposed to the possibility of being sent to Vietnam and was overall an integral part of strengthening our Armed Forces during a time of war.

Here are the overall qualifications for a person to be included in the Memorial list.  The person:

  • must have been a resident of Hicksville at some time before entering our Armed Forces
  • must have attended a public, private or parochial high school while living in Hicksville (attendance at HHS not required)
  • must have served on active duty anywhere in the world during America's Vietnam Era (1961-1973 per www.vietnamwar.com history timeline)
  • Note that both men and women qualify (We're stating this as we have very few women on our current list)

We have surpassed our goal of 250 names by summer, but know there are many more that served out there who meet these qualifications, but have yet to be identified by the project team (rough estimates indicate we should be able to collect between 2 and 3 thousand names of people meeting these qualifications).  We have access to official records in Washington, D.C. but have found that many people left Hicksville before entering the service and show a different town or city as their home at the time of entry.  So, we need to continue this grassroots effort and will also continue to use official records as a means of confirmation of all personnel on the list.

Our Project Team has the following members after being expanded over the past month with the addition of Walt Schmidt and Joe Ingino, both of whom are very active in local Veterans Affairs on Long Island:

-        Ken Strafer, Founder (HHS '62)

-        Joe Carfora, Master List Keeper (HHS '62)

-        Carl Probst, Input Data, Class of '59 & Others (HHS '59)

-        Tony Plonski, Input Data, Class of '64 & Others (HHS '64)

-        Tommy Sullivan, Press Release Editing (HHS '63)

-        Walter Schmidt, Hicksville Local Coordinator & Town of Oyster Bay Veterans Services Officer (HHS '65)

Joe Ingino, Veterans Advocate, Hicksville & Long Island (HHS 67)

What we need each person reading this to do:

Please review the attached list of names.  If you know of someone who is not listed, please send their name and what you can about their service to Joe Carfora at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..  Please use the information contained on the attached list as a guide for the data we need.

Thank you!

The Vietnam War Era Project Team

Footnote extracted from www.vietnamwar.com:  During 15 years of military involvement, over 2 million Americans served in Vietnam with 500,000 seeing actual combat. 47,244 were killed in action, including 8000 airmen. There were 10,446 non-combat deaths. 153,329 were seriously wounded, including 10,000 amputees. Over 2400 American POWs/MIAs were unaccounted for as of 1973.

Memory Lane

Burns Avenue 1961 Sixth Grade......Here we are!!!
Great Work from Peggy Moldovak Gill '67 !!!!!

Sorry it took me so long. Finding the picture was the easy part. I was having a little difficulty in copying and adding the text (i'm not that computer savvy) by I finally did it with a lot of help and encouragement from Jim Romanelli. I did not remember all the boys names but he was able to help me out with that.

I also have 1st grade, 2nd grade and 5th grade if you want those as well. Thanks for sending me the Lee Avenue photo. My husband Tom went to Lee (a year ahead of us) so we both enjoyed looking at it.

Peggy Gill

Dave Federbush submitted this Lee Avenue picture from 1961 Sixth  Grade....
can you help identify other names of people?

OK, with a LOT of help from many people I have put names in for several more classmates from Mr. Foley's Sixth Grade at Lee Avenue in 1961.

Dave Federbush submitted the original photograph, Jay Kaplan, Kathy Thompson, and  John "Chuck" Coffey were the top name submitters with assistance from Lew Furman, and Tom Hoffman.

There is disagreement whether it is or is not Rich Ericson in the upper right hand corner, so please weigh in with your opinions. Chuck Coffee thinks it is Gary Brennan. I kinda think Chuck is right...again.

The boy in the argyle sweater in front of Frank Koziak is thought of as Billy Mathis or Billy Stathis.

Dear Editors,

I hope there is someone reading this article that can fill in the blanks.

I started at East Street School and graduated from Hicksville High School 1945. There were about 80 students that graduated in 1945.

My wife and I are retired in a small gated golf community in Orlando, Florida. My wife, Margaret Reimels pan, was born in East Meadow and graduated in 1945 from Hempstead High School. She had relatives (Reimels and Erb) attending Hicksville High School in the 1940's.

I have been in touch with Jim Valentine and his wife Bernice Lehman Valentine and Emery Postenrieder. Also Edna Giese Rusch, Jean Goettelman LaPointe, Karen Kreib Kaleita & Richard Kaleita live in our community.

My brother, Charles Robert pan (deceased), his wife Jean Shepard pan, and my sister, Norma pan Bischoff (deceased) also graduated from Hicksville High School.

We attended the Florida Hicksville High School Reunion on February 15, 1998 at Ft. Pierce, Florida, arranged by John Uss.

Keep up the good work. We enjoy reading the HixNews on our Computer. Hi to the Class of 1945.

Any corrections?

Here are the officers of the Hicksville Key Club Executive Council meeting 40 years later in Nov. 2007 meeting in a Boston restaurant, in which your father's name was mentioned fondly.

L to R: Pete Arakas '67 who was "Vice President", Franco Campanello '67 who started out as Treasurer but changed to some other office that none of us can remember now; Jim Rubins '67 "Moderator", and John "Chuck" Coffey '67 "President". Dennis Donlon took the picture and he was "Secretary". Patty McNeeley '67 Hix, Chuck's wife, was an honorary member for the evening. Dennis Donlon wasn't able to graduate with us.

Second picture: L to R: Jim Rubins, Dennis Donlon, Jaqui Donlon [Dennis' wife], Pete Arakas, Karen Kellerman [Pete's wife], Franco Campanello, Patty McNeeley [Chuck's wife], and then our illustrious President, Chuck Coffey.

Our first order of business for the Cabinet meeting was: 1) Figuring what happened with the loss of hair over the years and 2) the gaining of girth.....but a good time was had by all remembering all the Key Club activities, fund raising, and frolics.

This was a newspaper article about the 1966 Key Club that was published in April 1994 in the Hicksville Illustrated News.

June is Graduation month.

Remember when you used to wish for "SNOW DAY"?  Hoping that you wouldn't have to turn in that homework [that you didn't do]? I am trying to figure out what year this snow storm hit [1957-1960], but obviously it was a big one; probably worth a day or two of missed school. Our dad would help my brother and me build an igloo in the front yard.

Dear Classmates,

Above is a picture that was taken I think around Christmas of 1964. I was very much in the navy and home on leave before going to the USS LIBERTY. The two people with me are Jane Marcin (Marcinkowski) and Terri Rabinowitz. Does anyone know them and/or their whereabouts? I've often thought about them but was unable to locate. Thanks for your help.

Warm Regards,
Buffalo Bob Casale, '61

Armed with a knife, Bryan J. Weixler approached a 17-year-old on South Oyster Bay Road in Hicksville on Sunday and demanded his money, police said.

A witness grabbed the knife-wielding Weixler from behind, disarmed him and held him until two off-duty New York City police officers could step in and detain him until Nassau County Police arrived on scene, authorities said. Weixler, 22, of Harrison Avenue in Bethpage, stands accused of first-degree robbery in the attack. He was arraigned Monday in First District Court in Hempstead. Details of his arraignment were not immediately known Tuesday. Police said the incident occurred Sunday at 3:45 a.m. The weapon and proceeds of the robbery were recovered.

Cops: Man arrested in beer bottle assault

The man who police said assaulted a 40-year-old with a beer bottle during a disturbance outside a Hicksville cafe last summer was arrested Monday in Plainview, following a long investigation. Nassau County police said they arrested Matthew Mirsky, 31, of Sherman Avenue, and charged him with assault.

Police said the incident occurred outside Charles Avenue Cafe on Woodbury Road at about 4:30 a.m. on July 20. It was then, police said, that Mirsky hit the male victim in the forehead with a beer bottle, causing "serious injury." Mirsky was arrested in Plainview, police said. He was charged with second-degree assault and is scheduled to be arraigned Tuesday in First District Court in Hempstead.

2 Arrests in L.I. Day School Carrot-Choking Death Case

The owner and assistant director of a Long Island day care center where a 2-year-old choked to death on a carrot stick were charged Wednesday with reckless assault, reckless endangerment and running an unlicensed day care for toddlers. Grand jury subpoenas were served on both centers Friday morning, and officials took student records, a copy of the school's charter and licensing records, several sources confirmed. Formica's attorney, Robert McDonald of Mineola, said Carousel is a well-run school, and that any lack of proper licenses was "through inadvertence, not through malfeasance."

"While this incident was certainly tragic, this licensing issue had nothing to do with the death of the child," McDonald said. McDonald said that Formica is devastated by Raspanti's death, and will cooperate fully with the district attorney's investigation. On Friday, Olivia's father, Anthony Raspanti, 35, of Hicksville, said that any investigation into what happened is welcome. "I don't want another family to go through what we've been through," he said.

Where to get great ice cream

Here's the scoop on local independent and chain parlors

One of the best places to get great ice cream. The Hicksville Sweet Shop, of course. What is amazing? the number of students, from all years, who spend time at the Sweet Shop. The old time students not only stop by for ice cream and shakes, they also stop by for dinner, for lunch, for comradery.
