The Newsletter

Hi,

Joyce (Thorburn) Jurgensen class of '67. I lived and worked in Hicksville for over 45 years. I have been in Real Estate with Coldwell Banker for over 18 years. I noticed someone wanted to see their old house.

A few years ago Nassau County took pictures of all properties. If you go to: http://www.nassaucountyny.gov/mynassauproperty/main.jsp , you will see your old home as of 2002.

Joyce (Thorburn) Jurgensen

Hi, HixNews Editors,

A number of alumni have been asking about seeing pix of their old neighborhoods in Hicksville. You can do this fairly easily using Google Maps. For instance, if you click on the following URL: Link you will see a fairly high resolution bird's eye view of Arcadia Lane, near the corner of Arrow Lane. The green arrow is located in front of the house I grew up in (#57 Arcadia). A few others from the Class of '59 who lived on Arcadia are: Marty Polsenski; Arthur Isaksen; and Steve Reden. Jed Schaiman's future wife Val also lived on Arcadia Lane. You can easily navigate from this Google Satellite Map of Arcadia Lane to nearby neighborhoods if you want to see what the house you grew up in looks like now.

Regards,
Henry Lichtenstein, Class of '59
[Ed. Note: go to http://maps.google.com/maps and type in your address]

Hello from Texas,

I look forward to your newsletter each month! Thank you for doing such a great job. It's really fun to recognize some of my classmate's names and to hear about their lives. I graduated in 1964, married my high school sweetheart in January 1967 just before he entered active duty with the Air Force. My husband Bob would have graduated from HHS in 1964 but because of his father's illness, his family moved out to Lindenhurst in 1963 - so he's a Lindenhurst 1964 grad. Bob spent nearly 30 years in the Air Force and now has eleven additional years of military service with the Texas Military Forces under the Texas Adjutant General.

We've been Texans for many years now, often leaving for one assignment or another but always returning to Texas. We now live in New Braunfels, Texas - in the Texas Hill Country and we love it! I worked in banking and county government for many years but am now very happily retired. We are fortunate to have both our daughters and their families nearby.

We'd like to say a special hello to all the HHS 1964 grads! Lorraine Cheeseman (Kirwan) This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.

Editors,

I don't know if you can use these photos of some of the kids who hung out at the Levittown Parkway Village Green in Hicksville. These photos were taken around 1962 and were friends of my brother Skip (John) Kirwan. Top row, left to right: Photo #1: Vinnie Tulisha, Jerry S. (NFI), Tommy D'Amato, George Lien, and Roy Hunt. Hicksville Memories - In the early 1960s I lived at 55 Nevada Street, the first street north of Mid-Island Plaza where our backyards butted up against the Plaza parking lot. Being so close to Mid-Island Plaza, naturally it was the place to hang out but my best memories include sitting on top of my garage with family and friends watching the annual fire tournaments. The tournament started with a parade. At least once, my brother Walter, a Nassau County Police Officer, was in the lead riding his three wheeled motorcycle. From the garage top we had an absolutely excellent view of the fire trucks from around the state racing, then screeching to a halt, tires smoking, while firefighters jumped off and speedily aimed their hoses at a distant target - the team that hit the target in record time would win the trophy! Mike Cucci, who recently wrote in, lived a few houses away and probably remembers the tournaments also.

Thank you to HixNews.

I saw a letter written by Myra Giansante in a previous newsletter and wrote to ask you to put her in touch with me, Kathy Kennedy (62). Myra wrote, but better than that, when she was in New York recently, she called me. I invited her and her sister-in-law, Tina Giansante (Louis' wife) to lunch at my home, and we spent the better part of four hours talking, reminiscing and discovering new things about each other. What a wonderful day we had.

Also thanks for the pictures of the horrific rain storm you must have had. Couldn't believe the waterfall on the LIRR! We were in sunny Italy and missed the floods. I'm home a week and already ready to go back to the hot, but much drier clime.

Kathy Kennedy, Class of '62

Dear Readers,

My sister Cookie (class of '60) and I were having lunch and chatting about shoes, ships, sealing wax and the newsletter. I mentioned an email we received from a reporter in England wanting to get in touch with the Twin Tones. An email to John Cunningham put them in touch and the man in England sent a thank you note. I mentioned that we get several requests each month when a reader notices a name in the newsletter and wishes to make contact with an old friend. We have put quite a few people back in touch. Cookie said that I should mention what goes on behind the scenes of the newsletter; therefore, this note. She also knows about editorial differences because we share most everything. Sisters are wonderful!

We did receive a note from Kathy Kennedy Weidig '62, which is printed elsewhere in this edition. Many people just send a short "thank you" but it would be nice to read a little more about these small reunions. This newsletter can only exist as long as you, dear readers, share.

Questions about the Hicksville Varsity Jacket.

Being in the history business I am interested to see if anybody knows the history of the Hicksville varsity jacket. Does anybody know when the jacket was first issued to varsity members, who designed it, and anything else about it? Would love to hear the history of the jacket if anybody knows anything. Let me know.... as always, I enjoy reading the newsletter... here's a photo of John "Jack" Kearney and myself wearing our jackets for the 1970 cross-country All-Division awards.

Below are some comments from subscribers to the Hicksville High School Newsletter. If you know of a friend or former schoolmate who is not aware of our monthly publication, please advise them of our identity or send us their email address so we can advise them when the publication is available on our website.

Hi Bob...

Many, many thanks for such a great newsletter. I was just able to get together with my best friend from high school, Linda (Frimmer) Whitlock, class of 1958, in Santa Fe, New Mexico. We had a fine time and she will probably send you pictures to publish in the next newsletter. Hope my donation will help with the expenses.
Keep up the good work.
Warmly,
Judy DeVincentis Morgan, class of '58
Durango, Colorado

Hi Bob...

Here is a donation toward the Hicksville High School Website. I really enjoy reading your monthly newsletter. Please, can you put the year of my graduation near my name...1957??

Good Luck,
Bob Uhlich

Dear Bob...

Please find enclosed a small donation to HixNews. Long overdue, I'm afraid!! Use it in good health.

Pat McCarthy Schwalback, class of '56

Dear Bob & Assoc. @ hixnews...

Thanks again for your great website. It's a "public service" to us!!

Dear Bob...

Hope all is well on your end. What a delight it is to receive the newsletter. And, It's growing by leaps and bounds.

The heat has been turned on here in the Southwest; Hot and Dry!! June and into July are our hottest months in the middle part of New Mexico. The tourists have descended upon us, also; good for the economy. Its funny how there are still people who think New Mexico is a foreign country.

I am enclosing a check to help with the cost of the newsletter. You and everyone on the staff of the newsletter are doing a phenomenal job.

Take Care.
Sincerely,
Lorraine (Kalen) Lowen, class of '66

Dear Bob & rest of Hix News editors...

Here is my monetary donation toward the expenses of the great Hix Newsletter you guys turn out every month. I intend to send you some of my old Hicksville memories soon.
I can't remember if you mentioned Roy's passing on October 17, 2006? I was too distraught at the time. That's what happens after 50 years of marriage. Again—great job!!

Sincerely,
Gwen (McCue) Schaaf, class of '55

Dear Bob...

Chris (Polanski) and I are email pals and have been for a long while. It was nice to hear from you and to reconnect after 47 years. I remember your name - but can't place your face (see below...this was before corrective surgery and then there is a picture of the results of my surgery - Bob). You may or may not remember me. I was Kathy McDonald in high school.
There were four of us in school back then who were "friends to the end" and that friendship continues right up to the present time. We weren't the "Four Horsemen" but rather just friends who enjoyed life and shared life's moments together. The other three friends were Maddy Frischman, Sharon Goldman and Linda Zuckerman.

Kathy (McDonald) Corey, class of '60

Editor note...I do remember Kathy as well as the other lovely ladies. Here they are as they looked in high school. Kathy said they all keep in touch but especially Kathy and Maddy!!!

Myra Rosen Fox, class of '65 moved away after graduation and moved back to Long Island in 1992. I now live in Roslyn with my husband Stewart, who I dated in High School, and took to my senior prom. We have three grown children. Oh yes, I'm a painter and will be in a four person show at the South Huntington Library, Alfred Van Loen Gallery 145 Pidgeon Hill Rd. Huntington Station NY. 631-549-4411 This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it.. I would like to invite you to the opening reception on Saturday Sept 8, 2007 from 2-4 PM at the South Huntington Public Library. It is a wonderful collaborative exhibit by Pat Hadley, Linda S. Ruden, Myra J. Fox and Randy E. Kraft. The exhibit is called THE LANDSCAPE OF OUR LIVES A Vision of Four-The exhibit will be be open from September 8th-October 11.

Hi editors,

It was great to read and reminisce, what a great job you are all doing. I'd love to know whether anything is in the works for a "50th" for the class of 1958 next year. I live in Ft. Lee, NJ part of the year and in Boynton Beach, FL during the winter. I'd be available to help with a reunion if there is a committee forming. Hi to HixNews graduates and friends,

I am still going through dad's political pictures and news articles in his scrapbooks, found some regarding Hicksville High School students and the old Nicholai Street School. Hopefully it will bring back fond memories for our HixNews readers. Unfortunately no dates were on the pages, but I believe the articles are from the 1960's.....

Joe Milich class'68,

currently living in California
Birthday March 19th
Anniversary October 10, 1970
Marie Cummings Milich (wife)

Forty years in a nutshell!

I lived at 15 Albany Street, Hicksville til 1967. I lived in Mike Sarluco's house until graduation; my family had moved to Lindenhurst.Joined the Air Force Aug 1968 to become a Computer/Electronic Technician!!! They made me a Medical Technician (long story). Did my basic training in San Antonio, Texas, and my tech school was in Biloxi, Mississippi. First assignment was in Wichita, Kansas. Dave Viejo came and spent a month (until the money was gone) but that is also a long story.

Met my wife in Wichita and got married, 10-October-1970. Spent 1971 in Hawaii as an Aeromedical Technician; during that time I flew to Japan, Korea, Alaska and the Philippines. I had a chance to go to Australia, but I missed the plane (long story). I got stationed in Colorado Springs, Colorado from 1972-4.

My son (Mike) was born March 25th, 1973 at the United States Air Force Academy Hospital. We went to Wichita Falls, Texas for a while until I got stationed in Tucson, Arizona 1975-79. We finally got base housing, sold our house, got orders for Phoenix, moved to a apartment, moved to Phoenix expecting base housing but went to an apartment instead, all in 4 months time (definitely a long story).I left the Air Force on 7-Sep-79 and moved back to Colorado Springs and attended college for Electronics (I knew I would get to electronics, sooner or later).

In 1982 we moved to Lindenhurst, N.Y., and I worked at the VA hospital in Northport, on the Island. My brother-in-law worked for the Department of Commerce and got me a position as an Electronic Tech. in Portland, Maine. We lived there until 1986 when I put in for a position in Grand Junction, Colorado.

In Aug 1998 I retired from federal service and we moved to Colorado Springs once again. In Jan 2003, my son was living in San Diego, California, when he got very ill. We put up our house for sale and in Aug of that year we moved to S. California to be with our son.

It has been four years now, and needless to say living in S. California, I'm no longer retired. I'm currently working for General Atomics. It's been a good life..I'll write again ...in forty years!

Hi,This is Rita (Mallett) Papazian from the Class of 1958. Just to let you know I've been a community journalist in Connecticut for over 30 years. The History Press just published my (soft cover) book, "Remembering Fairfield: Famous People & Historic Places." You can see it on line at Borders and Barnes & Noble. I now have five grandchildren. I teach writing at a community college and free-lance,. I want to give a shout out to all my alumni from my class, i.e. Linda Frimmer, etc. My classmate Vicki Penner Katz Whitaker and I are still friends (53 years now) and enjoy our annual visit in Springfield, IL. We're still silly and laugh about our Journalism class with Dr. Dart.

love to all
Rita Mallett Papazian

P.S. I forgot to mention my website: ritapapazian.com

Hicksville Grad Returns To His Roots.

In 1950, Ray and Vi Schmidt bought their first home. It was on Montana Street, mid-way between what would become Mid-Island Plaza and what was already the Press Wireless antenna field; right next to the south-west corner of Fairway Farms. Little did their son then know that some 55 years later he would find himself working at the Hicksville Community Center (between West Carl and West Cherry Streets) as the Town of Oyster Bay's Veteran Service Officer and head of its Veterans Services Division. And that he would also have the pleasure of seeing and exchanging information once again, with Mr. Richard Evers - his eighth-grade social studies teacher.

Well, I did and I do.

As the old military recruiting slogan goes "It's not a Job it's a calling." Tucked away in the Hicksville Community Center you'll find the Veteran Service Division of the Town of Oyster Bay. And most weekdays, between 7 a.m. and 6 p.m., you'll find me at my desk trying to resolve, to help, to cajole, my fellow veterans with issues of theirs. The formal hours of the Division are between 9 a.m. and 4:45 p.m. But as another old expression goes, "You can't teach an old dog new tricks." The majority of my working life was spent with 10 or 12 hour work-days, and not always at something I enjoy. I'm not going to change that now.

I am a Navy Veteran. After Great Lakes Boot-Camp, I spent two-plus months in a Navy A-School learning the manly art of electronic communications. During that time, at Norfolk, VA, and for reasons in which lie a tale for another day, I volunteered for Vietnam or Viet Nam as it is know outside the English-speaking world. At that time, around August '67, the Navy had its Vietnam bound personnel attend a three-week SERE School (Survival, Evasion, Resistance and Escape) located in Little Creek, VA. For those of you who might recognize the location, yes, we were several barracks down the grinder from the Navy's UDT/SEAL school.

After that (and another story for another day), it was off to beautiful down-town Vinh Long, Mekong Delta, IV-Corps, Vietnam and a stay at the NSA Vinh Long (Naval Support Activity Vinh Long) 4-Star facilities. There, I had the privilege to work at the river-side Vietnamese RAG (River Assault Group) Base as a Navy Brown Water Mekong Delta River Rat.

Over the next three tours, October '67 to December '69, and going from E-3 to E-5 (RM2 - Radioman Petty Officer Second Class) I had the opportunity to experience, as either part of NSA Vinh Long or RivRon 57 (River Squadron 57): the USS Garrett County, LST-786; TET I; the YR-9; the APL-46; the YRBM 20, known as the "Delta Hilton;" TET II; and, Provincial Reconnaissance Units (PRUs), Navy Intelligence Liaison Officer (NILO) Vinh Long, SEAL Team One / Two, Various PBR (Patrol Boat River) River Divisions, the Seawolves of HAL-3 (UH-1B helicopters - the Cobras came later), and, one night accidentally shot the arse off a wild pig, with my trusty M-79 grenade launcher - my weapon of choice. Something I did not live down for quite a while.

For you WWII Merchant Marines or their next of kin, a heads up. On July 18, 2007 there was signed into New York State law a bill that authorizes payment of a war bonus of $250. For more information contact your New York State Assemblyman or State Senator.

Hicksville Trivia

From the early to mid-60s, at Mid-Island Plaza and located just east and just west of Gertz, were two pretzel carts from which you could buy a pretzel for 10 cents; three for a quarter. One of the regular pretzel vendors named Mike Hatgis was a 1965 graduate of Hicksville High School and later became a martial arts expert with a DoJo located on Broadway just north of Mid-Island Plaza. One of the other regular pretzel vendors wore glasses, also was a 1965 graduate of Hicksville High School, and became an accountant. Guess who? I wonder where Mike is now.

Till next month be well... and remember, "Let No Veteran Ever Stand Alone!"

Having read the newsletter, I was saddened to hear about Parrot's health and predicaments following his tour in Vietnam. I cannot overstress the importance of every single Vietnam Veteran to immediately register with the Veterans Administration as an Agent Orange victim whether he/she is healthy or not. The health problems associated with DIOXIN (Agent Orange) are far too numerous to mention here. Soft tissue cancers, lymphoma, diabetes and many more are linked to dioxin exposure. Even more devastating is the fact that DIOXIN exposure also contributed to awful birth defects of children of Vietnam vets years after their return. Parrot's children most likely have been victims. I urge that this be followed up since their is no statute of limitations. More than 20 million gallons of DIOXIN were sprayed over Vietnam and the people in that country are suffering now and will continue to suffer for years to come. DIOXIN makes DDT look like candy. Any person who can establish that he/she served in VIETNAM on official business, even for one day, is eligible for free screening and health care.

If I can be of assistance to anyone regarding this subject, please contact me immediately. This also applies to children of Vietnam vets with possible DIOXIN related health issues.

Billy Joel's music to play at Nunley's Carousel

NEWSDAY 6:03 PM EDT, July 16, 2007

When singer and songwriter Billy Joel was a child, riding the horses of Nunley's Carousel was a favorite childhood ritual. It so captivated him that as an adult Joel composed "Waltz No. 1, Op. 2," subtitled "Nunley's Carousel." Now, the historic carousel, built in 1912, is getting a face lift. Restoration on the ride will begin next month. And when the carousel settles into its future home along Museum Row at Mitchel Field, Joel's song will be the one riders hear.

It's all thanks to Rachel Obergh, 9, of Wantagh, who founded Pennies for Ponies, a nonprofit group started two years to help pay for the restoration. Obergh knew about Joel's composition and sent him a note, asking if it could be played when the carousel opens again in fall 2008.

Ever the Long Island fan, Joel agreed and arranged for his keyboard player David Rosenthal to record the composition with organ-like instrumentation.

The animals, organ, motor and other parts of the carousel have been in storage for nine years, but next month the largest manufacturer of wooden merry-go-rounds will begin restoring the ride, which first operated in Brooklyn before moving to Nunley's amusement park in Baldwin where it charmed kids and adults for 55 years. The county purchased the ride for $854,400 in 1998.

The restoration is being paid for with $420,000 from discretionary capital funds controlled by Nassau Legis. Joseph Scannell (D-Baldwin), along with money raised by Pennies for Ponies. Thusfar, 28 of 42 carousel animals have been adopted for $2,000.

This story was reported by Bill Bleyer and written by Emily C. Dooley.

On June 25, 2007 in Nashville Tennessee, Michael C. Samberg ('64') lost his 13 year battle with cancer.  He was my friend for 50 years and I will miss him.  Michael was a loving husband, a devoted father, and an outstanding older brother.   His focus always centered on his family.  His distinguished career as a Warden was noteworthy and he was recognized as an innovator and expert in the field of Corrections.  A proud moment for Michael and his family last year was his award as Warden of the Year.  Michael's diagnosis in 1994 was the beginning of his brave and formidable fight with a rare form of cancer.  At 5 years we celebrated his continued survival and at 10 years all were amazed at his will to live.  He endured endless medical procedures and as an amazing testament to strength and determination he continued working until 10 days before his death.  I learned many things from him and the most lasting was his example of how to be the greatest friend.  His grace and dignity will be forever remembered.  Rest my friend.

Larry Senn ('64')

Hi Editors,

Just a short note to let you know that Frank Jones, '66 passed away on June 3 2007.  Frank was part of our Mid Island Bowl crew.  He went through some rough times these last few years.

Bill Walden, 65

I'd like to pass this information on to you that Barbara Edwards listed in your August birthday section passed away in November 2005.  You can probably confirm that with her husband George at the email address she used.
