Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial - PROJECT UPDATE

One new name was added in the April-May period for a new total of 1,883 names on the Confirmed List.  Unfortunately, no progress was made during the month on the Unconfirmed List of Names and we urgently need the help of the HixNewsreadership to verify whether or not the 186 people on this list qualify to be included in the Memorial and to continue to assist us in filling in still missing data from the Confirmed List of Names.

THE 1910 FORD

The year is 1910, over one hundred years ago. What a difference a century makes. Here are some statistics for the Year 1910: (applies to the USA )

The average life expectancy for men was 47 years.

Fuel for this car was sold in drug stores only.

Only 14 percent of the homes had a bathtub.

Only 8 percent of the homes had a telephone.

There were only 8,000 cars and only 144 miles of paved roads.

The maximum speed limit in most cities was 10 mph.

The tallest structure in the world was the Eiffel Tower .

The average US wage in 1910 was 22 cents per hour.

The average US worker made between $200 and $400 per year.

A competent accountant could expect to earn $2000 per year

A dentist $2,500 per year

A veterinarian between $1,500 and $4,000 per year

A mechanical engineer about $5,000 per year.

More than 95 percent of all births took place at home.

Ninety percent of all Doctors had no college education.

Instead, they attended so called medical schools...many of which were condemned in the press and the government as substandard.

Sugar cost four cents a pound.

Eggs were fourteen cents a dozen.

Coffee was fifteen cents a pound.

Most women only washed their hair once a month, and used Borax or egg yolks for shampoo.

There was no such thing as under arm deodorant or tooth paste.

Canada passed a law that prohibited poor people from entering into their country for any reason.

The five leading causes of death were:

1. Pneumonia and influenza
2. Tuberculosis
3. Diarrhea
4. Heart disease
5. Stroke

The American flag had 45 stars.

The population of Las Vegas Nevada was only 30.

Crossword puzzles, canned beer, and iced tea hadn't been invented yet.

There was no Mother's Day or Father's Day.

Two out of every ten adults couldn't read or write and only six percent of all Americans had graduated from high school.

Eighteen percent of households had at least one full-time servant or domestic help.

There were about 230 reported murders in the entire U.S.A.

My Dear Girl and Boy...

My dear girl and boy, the day you see me getting old, I ask u to please be patient, but most of all, try to understand what I'm going through.  If when we talk, I repeat the same thing a thousand times, don't interrupt me to say: "You said the same thing a minute ago"...Just listen, please.  Try to remember the times when you were little and I would read the same story night after night until you would fall asleep.

When I don't want to take a bath, don't be mad and don't embarrass me.  Remember when I had to run after you making excuses and trying to get you to take a shower when you were just a boy/girl?

When you see how ignorant I am when it comes to new technology, give me the time to learn and don't look at me that way... remember honey, I patiently taught you how to do many things like eating appropriately, getting dressed, combing your hair and dealing with life's issues every day...the day you see I'm getting old, I ask you to please be patient, but most of all, try to understand what I'm going through.

If I occasionally lose track of what we're talking about, give me the time to remember, and if I can't, don't be nervous, impatient or arrogant.  Just know in your heart that the most important thing for me is to be with you.

And when my old, tired legs don't let me move as quickly as before, give me your hand the same way I offered mine to you when you first walked.  When those days come, don't feel sad....just be with me, and understand me while I get to the end of my life with love.

I'll cherish and thank you for the gift of time and joy we shared.  With a big smile and the huge love I've always had for you, I just want to say, "I love you my darling daughter/son".
