People Looking for People
We've taken a new approach to this section. It's been re-organized by Henry Lichtenstein as an online spreadsheet. Rather than publish the list here, it's now available below. If you have found the person you are looking for, please let the editors know so the name can be removed from the list. If there's someone you're looking for, just send your request and we'll be happy to add it to the list. If anyone knows these folks, send an email to:

Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial Project Update
With 122 new names in December we surpassed the 1,000 name milestone and now have a grand total of 1,022 names on our project list. December was another short month due to the Holiday Season and some of us having travel plans to see family and friends during this period. The past month's contribution again came largely thanks to the work of one of our Alumni in collaboration with the Archivist at the Hicksville Public Library. With the continuation of this effort and the continued contributions of our entire Alumni, many more names will continue to be added in the months ahead.
Please see the Veteran's Section of this issue for the latest information on the project and what you can continue to do to help its success.
It's also more important than ever (even if you don't have new names to send us) to review the list for missing information or information shown in red that needs correction or clarification. Please send me an email if you can help us fill in the blanks. High school class year has been specifically noted, where we have it, to make this review easier for you to scan the list.
On behalf of the entire Project Team, I trust you all had a wonderful Holiday Season and wish you Good Health, Happiness and Prosperity in 2011!!
Regards,
Joe Carfora, HHS '62

Honoring our Veterans
The first and last pictures were taken at the beach in Santa Barbara adjacent to the pier. There is a veterans group that started putting a cross and candle for every military person killed in Iraq and Afghanistan . The amazing thing is that the group only does this on weekends. They put up this simulated graveyard Friday and take it down Sunday evening. Guys sleep in the sand next to the pier to keep watch at night so nobody can destroy their graveyard. Every cross has the name, rank, Date of Birth and Date of Death of someone who has passed.
This display is very moving and very powerful??? What is interesting is there are so many young volunteers and many 30 to 40 year olds as well. Amazing!
Memory Lane
Three Years Before the Mega Reunion in 2000, there was a multi year reunion held for the classes of 1961 to 1964. Following are some pictures of those who attended with "then" pictures from graduation. More to follow next month.

Casale's Corner
The Wooden Bowl
A frail old man went to live with his son, daughter-in-law, and four-year-old grandson. The old man's hands trembled, his eyesight was blurred, and his step faltered.
The family ate together at the table. But the elderly grandfather's shaky hands and failing sight made eating difficult. Peas rolled off his spoon onto the floor. When he grasped the glass, milk spilled on the tablecloth.
The son and daughter-in-law became irritated with the mess.
"We must do something about father,"' said the son.
'I've had enough of his spilled milk, noisy eating, and food on the floor.'
So the husband and wife set a small table in the corner. There, Grandfather ate alone while the rest of the family enjoyed dinner. Since Grandfather had broken a dish or two, his food was served in a wooden bowl. When the family glanced in Grandfather's direction, sometimes he had a tear in his eye as he sat alone. Still, the only words the couple had for him were sharp admonitions when he dropped a fork or spilled food. The four-year-old watched it all in silence.
One evening before supper, the father noticed his son playing with wood scraps on the floor. He asked the child sweetly, "What are you making?" Just as sweetly, the boy responded, "Oh, I'm making a little bowl for you and Mama to eat your food in when I grow up." The four-year-old smiled and went back to work.
The words so struck the parents so that they were speechless. Then tears started to stream down their cheeks. Though no word was spoken, both knew what must be done.
That evening the husband took Grandfather's hand and gently led him back to the family table. For the remainder of his days he ate every meal with the family. And for some reason, neither husband nor wife seemed to care any longer when a fork was dropped, milk spilled, or the tablecloth soiled.
