People Looking for People
We've taken a new approach to this section. It's been re-organized by Henry Lichtenstein as an online spreadsheet. Rather than publish the list here, it's now available below. If you have found the person you are looking for, please let the editors know so the name can be removed from the list. If there's someone you're looking for, just send your request and we'll be happy to add it to the list. If anyone knows these folks, send an email to:

Attention All HixNews Readers!!
Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial Project Update
We've added 99 new names in November in what was actually a short month due to the Thanksgiving Holiday and some of us having travel plans encompassing a week or more.
We have now reached the milestone of 900 names, with the past month's contribution again coming thanks largely to the work of one of our Alumni in collaboration with the Archivist at the Hicksville Public Library. With the continuation of this effort and the continuing contributions of our entire Alumni, many more names will continue to be added in the months ahead.
Please see the Veteran's Section of this issue for the latest information on the project and what you can continue to do to help its success.
It's also more important than ever (even if you don't have new names to send us) to review the list for missing information or information shown in red that needs correction or clarification. Please send me an email if you can help us fill in the blanks. High school class year has been specifically noted, where we have it, to make this review easier for our readers.
On behalf of the entire Project Team, let me also take this opportunity to wish each and every one of you and your families, the Best that the coming Holidays have to offer!
Sincerely,
Joe Carfora, HHS '62

Back in September, the class of 1959 had a luncheon at a local establishment. This is the continuation of series of get-togethers we try to have each year and especially when Joyce Clements Anglim is in town. Naturally, the turnout is variable depending on each person's schedule. We do our best to keep everyone from our class advised of whenever we have such an event. The following pictures are from the luncheon.

Memory Lane
Renovation of Penn Station Eagle at Hicksville LIRR Station Completed
One of 22 original stone eagles that were perched atop the old Penn Station in New York City is nested in Hicksville . When that facility was demolished back in October of 1963, something had to be done with the beautiful figurines that surrounded the station that was built back in 1910.
Thanks to the efforts of Samuel A. Goldberg, a long time Hicksville Latin Language teacher, the stone statue was dedicated on May 15, 1965.
A group of Hicksville High School Students, led by Mr. Goldberg, were gathered around the sculpture of the Eagle and the dedication became official.
Goldberg and his Latin classes participated in the original dedication. Mr. Goldberg was the "Spiritus Movens" behind the eagle acquisition. He convinced then LIRR President Goodfellow that one of the Penn Station Eagles should be given to Hicksville .
Mr. Goldberg taught Latin in New Jersey for 18 years and after coming to Long Island in 1955, he taught the subject for another 20 years. He was Chairman of Foreign Languages at Hicksville High School until his untimely illness caused him to retire. He passed away in 1981.
Forty-five years of exposure to the elements caused damage to Hicksville 's eagle. The beak was a focal point of the repair.
An unsuccessful previous repair attempt had damaged the beak.
Sculptor Steve Tatti made the repairs over a period of time.
On October 29th, 2010 the 100 year-old eagle was rededicated at a ceremony held at the Hicksville station. The stone bird weighs almost 6,000 pounds.
The restoration included a plaque that renamed the eagle in honor of Mr. Goldberg.
Some pictures of the eagle are shown below.

HICKSVILLE TIDBITS DECEMBER 2010
These charming pictures were taken by renowned nature photographer Norbert Rosing whose work has appeared in National Geographic and other magazines in which Rosing recounts the story of how these particular photographs came to be taken.
The location was a kennel outside Churchill , Manitoba owned by dog breeder Brian Ladoon, who kept some 40 Canadian Eskimo sled dogs there when Rosing visited in 1992. A large polar bear showed up one day and took an unexpected interest in one of Ladoon's tethered dogs. The other dogs went crazy as the bear approached, Rosing says, but this one, named Hudson , "calmly stood his ground and began wagging his tail." To Rosing and Ladoon's surprise, the two "put aside their ancestral animus," gently touching noses and apparently trying to make friends.
Just then another large polar bear arrived and advanced toward one of Ladoon's other dogs, Barren. The latter rolled on his back, then the pair commenced playing "like two roughhousing kids," Rosing writes, tumbling around in the snow as he snapped pictures of the surreal encounter from the safety of his vehicle. The bear returned for more play sessions every afternoon for 10 days in a row.
The citizens of a small country town hit hard by Victoria's record Australian heatwave now know how intense the temperatures really are... even the native animals are seeking respite.
