The Newsletter

Many of you may have noticed the absence of input from Linda (Shorty) Piccerelli Hayden who is one of the Hicksville High School Newsletter editors. Linda maintains a very busy life style. She was involved in her own business, helped her son with his and at the same time was active in the community in Sparta, New Jersey. She was also maintaining a household with all its responsibilities and taking care of her husband, Claude, whose health is not 100 percent.

Linda had an aneurysm that was being surveyed through scans. Most Abdominal Aortic Aneurysms (AAA) are not treated until they grow in size to a point where they might rupture. I went through the screening myself for several years (Cat scan) to monitor the size. Nothing is normally done until the aneurysm expands to 5.5cm.

During the summer of 2006, mine had grown to 5.7. I had surgery in November using a procedure, endovascular aneurysm repair (EVAR). Endovascular repair first became practical in the 1990s.The surgeon places an abdominal aortic endoprosthesis (stent) into the expanding aorta through the groin

The aorta leading from the heart is at the top portion of the above photo. The femoral arteries in the legs are shown in the lower portion. The stent is manufactured specifically for each person with an aneurysm. It is placed into the aorta and into the femoral arteries using a catheter. Once the surgeon is happy with the placement (using many xrays), the catheter is removed and the stent expands. The stent is held in place by pressure.

When Linda went for an update, a second aneurysm was discovered. Because there were two, the EVAR procedure was ruled out. This meant she would have to undergo the surgery using open repair. The open name implies the procedure where the patient is opened up to expose the area where the aneurysm resides.

Linda's comment to me, "You haven't heard much from me as I could not sit at the computer very long. 65 stitches down the front of my body made sitting very difficult. I never want to see a Heart/Lung Machine, Kidney Machine, or tubes all over me again. They kept me in an induced coma for a while, however, you still know that you're hooked up to all that crap. I finally have ditched the cane and can walk pretty good without it."

Shorty is now feeling better and it is appropriate to say that we all wish her a continued full recovery. You can email Linda at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. . You can send notes to This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it. that will be forwarded to Linda and included in next month's issue.

If any one wants to send a card, send it to BOX 216, Sparta, NJ 07871-0216.

Dear Classmates'

I just received a note from classmates about new members from various years who have joined their website.

I sent a note via classmates inviting those former classmates to join our Hicksville High School Newsletter Community.

They are'John McNeil, class of 1962'.Francine Tieder, class of 1961'Tom Travis, class of 1959'Phyllis Andriani, class of 1965, Danny Mastronardi, class of 1961, Rich Powers, class of 1964, Dorothy Gast, class of 1961 and Steve Ruggiero from the class of 1960.

If you correspond with any of these former classmates, drop them a note and advise of our on line website that houses the newsletter.

Thanks.

Hix News just keeps getting better. Finally an East Street School addition and I think I can top that...not competitively I must add. I have a panoramic ( I mean BIG ) of the entire student body out front not sure what year. as soon as I find a way to scan it, I'll forward on to the editors.

Bob:

This is Jerry Gardner grad of '66. I thank you for the card. It was very touching and Michelle and I enjoyed it. Our date is October 12th. I remember you as a high energy, very friendly guy, and a sharp contrast to your sister, Eileen, who I remember as very reserved. You all were friends of my older sister Ronni and would party in the basement of the family home.

I remember the people in the photo Chris Heidt who was so nice to me. In those days, "older girls" treated younger siblings of their friends as pests and would ignore them. But Chris was never like that. Last I heard she was living in Vegas. I knew Janet Kapsol whose older sister, Kathy, was in your photo. I remember how thrilled you were whenever Bob Katcavage got together with you.

Does anyone remember driving to Eastern Long Island to catch the Giants on Channel 3 when the home games were always blacked out on Channel 2? How about Frank's Alibi which always stayed open late for hungry kids like I was at a time when there was nowhere else to go. Its never been replaced unfortunately. I don't keep in touch with anyone and it's a great thrill when I see a name out of the past that I remember fondly.

Thanks for remembering me and putting up with my ramblings.

Kind regards,
Jerry Gardner class of 66

Have to admit getting the newsletter (well, the notification that is) is a highlight in my inbox.. Saw my name in the birthday list for this month (thank you!!) and noticed my state was missing. I'm in Colorado if you could add.

Thanks so much,

Pat

Thanks for the update on the old school picture. Did you graduate in 1964 or 1965? We have you listed as class of '65.

Thanks. Warm Regards,
Buffalo Bob Casale

Hey Bob,

I graduated with the class of '65. We met four years ago (2005) during the 40-year reunion for the class of 1965 at a hotel in Hauppague. Am hopeful that there will be another in 2010.

Pat

I received the following note from Herb Pearce after he viewed the first grade picture, 1953, at East Street School

My aunt was a teacher there,

Mrs. E. Pearce

Bob,

Midway through second grade I was "skipped" to third grade. So all the kids in the above picture are from the class of '65. I did graduate in '64. Herb Pearce's email struck a note. Mrs. Pearce was, I think, my first grade teacher.

Bill Mehlman '64

One other East Street picture displayed in the October issue, the Kindergarten picture from 1952, the girl between Nicky Roscigno and the 'girl on the phone' is Jeannie Correri. She lived on Cliff Drive and had an older brother named Anthony.

Bob:

Thanks so much for the prominent display of my Hicksville Library concert... especially on such short notice. I'm really looking forward to performing in my hometown!!

This is a note from Denise Eisele to Patricia O'Rourke:

Hi Patricia,

This is Denise (Eisele) Felipe. How is your brother Michael? I sold the house at 5 Gables Drive and moved down to Hobe Sound, FL in November 2003.. I'm just getting started with the newsletter and it's good to see a familiar name.

Denise

Thank you for the birthday greeting. I was away and was not near the internet. The card made me smile.

Thanks to all of you at the Hix Newsletter for the wonderful card. Keep up the great work you do on the Newsletter and keeping all of us connected and informed.

I haven't seen any mention of the memorable luncheon arranged by Sheila Cohen Klein for two of Hicksville's all-time best elementary teachers: Elayne Kabakoff and Beverly Steinhardt ( I cannot remember what her married name was). The both taught at Fork Lane and then moved onto Woodland. Elayne's sister, Phyllis, taught at Lee Avenue for several years as well but now lives in Israel.

This was a memorable afternoon that all in attendance will never forget. Sharing the memories of so many years ago was unbelievable.

I have attached some pictures for other former students of theirs to see. One is of the entire group and the other is me, Marcia Diamond Sandler (class of 71), Miss Kabakoff on the left and miss Steinhart on the left (both seated). Also I want to thank Sheila, once again, for arranging the luncheon.

Group Picture Fork Lane Reunion L-R, F-B: Miss Kabakoff, Miss Steinhardt, Lynne Lombardi, Marcia Diamond Sandler

Editors;

Great article on Tommy Sullivan. I have a little trivia for Tommy, I wonder if he remembers when he had a small rock band while attending HHS, and was looking for opportunities to play. Tommy and I were friends back then, and I offered him a chance to play for my 16th birthday party, in my basement. Well, long story short, Tommy and his band played for us, and I got to have a live band for my party, even though it was in my unfinished basement. Little did we know then where time would take us, or how the fates would affect us in the future.

Dear HixNews

My name is Tom Ernst. I'm a graduate from the class of 1971. I am currently single and live in Puerto Rico. Please add me to your mail list.

Thanks.

Someone asked if Bill Schrimpe lived on Bloomingdale Rd. Not sure if they were looking for him or what but I used to work with Bill and he grew up on other side of town near East Street, maybe Elm. Last I talked to him over 10 years ago, he lived in Holbrook I believe

John Ebbecke '72

Dear Alumni

Does anyone a know Paul Ceceri? (Sp)? He would have graduated from HHS around 1972 - 73. He was a very good friend and we lost contact around 1973. Would love to reestablish contact.

Thanks

Bob,

Reunion was fantastic. Am sending a separate email with an attachment containing two pictures. One is at the Holiday Inn and the other is in front of the school after the tour. I sent the same to Roger for insertion on to our web site. Can these be used next month? I am going to send a note thanking the Inn staff and DJ and giving their contact information because they all did a superb job. Others should be made aware of it incase it fits their needs.

Hi Bob,

Hope you are doing well; I moved to Hicksville during my high school sophomore year so I don't know any of the elementary school children in your picture. We are, however, going out for lunch with a group of HHS 1961 classmates this coming Wednesday. Dennis Naso set this up with some other people so I don't know how many will attend.

Stay well.

Love
Olivia Lepis Schmidt

I think the girl in the first row second seat is Joan Sabatella. I also know one of the girls in the other picture but cannot come up with a name for the face. I will look it up in the yearbook. AND I WENT TO ST. IGGIE'S!! and I still can pick out people.

Mary O'Shaughnessey Cleary

Sorry Bob...

I went to Old Country Road School, and then off to Nicholai Street school for 6th grade in 1954 with Mr. McAlister (I think).
Bill Canham

Hi Bob

Hope all is well with you and give my best to Joyce. Sorry about not being able to name some of those pictured. I went to East St. Don't know anyone. However, we had our mini-mini reunion (about 12 of us) on Wednesday. I believe Lou Fenigstein knew several of them.

Keep in touch.
Mike Bisaccio

Hi again,

About 12 of us from the class of 1961 met for lunch. Dennis Naso took pictures and I hope he sends them to you for the newsletter. Regarding the pictures you sent me, I handed them out at lunch and they could only identify two people as follows:

  • Nicholai School: first row - second from right - Mary Jane Gemuendt
  • Nicholai School: Standing in front of teacher, 3rd from right Tommy Woodruff
  • Fork Lane School: Joan Sabatella - 2nd row - right side (end)

Send them out to some other folks for identification. As I mentioned, I did not go to elementary school in Hicksville so I cannot be of any help in this regard.

Regards
Olivia Lepis Schmidt

HICKSVILLE HISTORICAL SOCIETY

The September 22nd Hicksville Historical Society meeting Started with a brief business discussion, and Kathleen Maier was introduced as the newest board member. The latest Society Newsletter was handed out. Then, the Society had a good time learning about the types and styles of Miniature figures.

Historical Miniature Collectors Society President Greg DeFranco started the discussion, followed by Scott Miller on the history of the hobby, then Rick Girardin on painting kits, and John Jefferies on casting miniatures. They had a table with some good examples, plus a presentation on several collectibles. President DeFranco mentioned a Model show, which will come up at the Freeport Recreation Center on November 21st. For info, email This email address is being protected from spambots. Hi!

I had been receiving your newsletter (and thoroughly enjoying it) for quite some time. But, I didn't get one in September, or the current one either. And, this is the first time you've missed my birthday. I've checked my SPAM folder and it hasn't gone in there either. I really miss reading all the news from Alumni and hope you'll get me back on your mailing list.

Thanks,

Dear HixNews

Thank you all so very much! The card is great. It made my day. Keep up the great job you all do each month.

Sue Lipshutz Epstein '57

Is it my computer or have you guys hit a snag and are late getting October out? I sincerely hope that mine did not come back to you for whatever reason there might be. I still want to be on the list to receive the newsletter so please tell me if it's something I need to attend to (and how to do it) or is it on your end? Thanks for looking into this for me.

Maddy Bianco De Louisa '60

Hi, Maddy.

The newsletter is always online at hixnews.com What is sent you is just a reminder that the new month's edition is online. This happens on the first of each and every month. You can view the current newsletter at any time as well as all the previous issues in the archives. You'll be added to the new notification list so you'll get the reminders on a regular basis..

Hi Hix News,

I see on your October Newsletter that Ronnie McCarthy Quigley is looking for my sister Terry and myself. Well, she has found me on Facebook. I was so shocked I almost fell off my chair. To tell you the truth, I never thought anyone would be looking for me! It felt nice. We were friends all through high school and beyond. The gang of us used to hang out at the Knight Club (aka Shady Maples, TJ Courtneys). What a blast.

I would like to put a shout out to anyone who hung out at the Knight Club between 1975 - 1980. What a great place that was. Come on I know you are out there! Remember the band that played there in Costume??? I really think they were called the MONSTERS!! LOL! Come on classes of 74, 75, 76.

Thanks for all you do. This newsletter is the greatest!

Matt plans to continue his work fulltime in our group until that time. In the interim, please join me in congratulating Matt on this significant achievement, which is even more notable given today's highly competitive market for such positions. We are confident Matt will be a great addition to Judge Gropper's chambers. We also thank Matt in advance for his commitment to this important public service.

Congrats, Matt, on this well-deserved opportunity!

A BLAST FROM THE PAST

Check it out. Cannot remember how long ago this was. Some Hicksville High Alumni from the class of 1961 got together at Delaney's for Karaoke. Ed was wonderful, as usual, giving us top billing (LOL). Some of us didn't want to sing, so we just socialized. It was a memorable and wonderful night because we got together once again. Don't know how many of those memorable meetings are in the future?? I understand that today, October 14, 2009, a group of '61 grads got together for lunch. We are hoping for some pictures to support that meeting. In the interim, enjoy the 'Blast from the Past.'

A frog goes into a bank and approaches the teller. He can see from her nameplate that her name is Patricia Whack.

"Miss Whack, I'd like to get a $30,000 loan to take a holiday.."

Patty looks at the frog in disbelief and asks his name. The frog says his name is Kermit Jagger, his dad is Mick Jagger, and that it's okay, he knows the bank manager. Patty explains that he will need to secure the loan with some collateral.

The frog says, "Sure. I have this," and produces a tiny porcelain elephant, about an inch tall, bright pink and perfectly formed. Very confused, Patty explains that she'll have to consult with the bank manager and disappears into a back office.

She finds the manager and says, "There's a frog called Kermit Jagger out there who claims to know you and wants to borrow $30,000, and he wants to use this as collateral."

She holds up the tiny pink elephant. "I mean, what in the world is this?" (you're gonna love this)

The bank manager looks back at her and says...

"It's a knickknack, Patty Whack. Give the frog a loan, His old man's a Rolling Stone." (You're singing it, aren't you? Yeah, I know you are........)

Never take life too seriously! Come on now, you grinned, I know you did!!!

My name is John C. Fyfe.

I graduated in 1954. I'm not married and currently live in London, England. Please make note of my new email address. Are there any others on your list from the Class of 1954?

Does anyone recall a Ms. Huskawitz(sp?). She taught at Fork Lane as well as Hicksville Junior High School. How about a Mr. Hilsky?

Hi Maddy (Frischman)

I've been away on a holiday in Cornwall for just over a week; thanks VERY much for keeping me in the loop about plans for the reunion. The company that has been mentioned sounds good, and the date I believe is fine for me & my husband to come to the U.S. Is the plan to have the venue on Long Island? Once things become definite, I will spread the word amongst my 6 or so good 'band friends' with whom I stay in touch & ask them to spread it further. I've only just joined Facebook and am NOT very savvy at all--I barely know how to reach my 'wall'. If you can't find anyone to publicize it on Facebook I'll try asking Barbara Cohen how to do it....but I'd rather someone else did. Definitely we should have HixNews publicize it as much as possible. Hope you are well. We just got back last night & I haven't even unpacked mostly yet or caught up with all my emails! Just please keep letting me know what's happening....

All the best,
Lois Chaber '60

Hi Bob,

Thanks for signing my book and thanks for your work on the newsletter.

A little about me. I have two grown children. One grandchild. My son and I are estranged. My daughter lives in NY City. Of course, as you probably know, I live in the Columbus, Ohio area. Until recently, I was very active in condo business. But that was a bad idea. Not good to get too involved with your neighbors.

I teach part time at a community college. In 1996 I retired from working for the state. I am trying to write a book, but I never have enough time and, of course, the muse is not always present. I have been trying to locate Judy LaCagnin from my class (1956) but have been notably unsuccessful. She was such a good friend in school, even did me the favor of laughing at my jokes. And I have no idea what happened to her after I graduated in 1956. Oh well, such is life.

I know I have taken a long time to respond to your "signature" in my book, but I have been busy this summer and early fall. It is time now for me to get into my winter mode. I don't think I need to say this, but I hope you will write.

Mike Lepp '56

Mike

Why don't you expand your bio sketch a little and let your classmates know about your career after school. Your old email said Judge Mike...what is your history regarding that? Have you checked our bio page on the newsletter. We are trying to expand the pages. Thanks.

Regards
Buffalo Bob Casale

I was an Administrative Law Judge (ALJ) for the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency from 1982 to 1996 (when I retired).

An ALJ is sometimes called an Article I judge whereas a judge who hears cases from divorces to criminal cases to civil litigation is often called an Article III judge. Article I , under the Constitution, defines the executive branch of government whereas Article 3 deals with the judiciary. Article I judges hear cases like public utility ratemaking, liquor license suspension and revocation, environmental permit denials, licenses to broadcast, unemployment compensation denials, etc., etc., etc. An Article I judge sometimes wears a robe. An Article I judge usually makes a written recommendation. It can be brief or quite lengthy. His/her decision goes to the head of the agency for whom he works for a final decision. In somewhat less than half the states an ALJ works for a separate agency that does nothing but adjudicate cases.

Dear HixNews

Thank you so very much for remembering my Birthday!

Nancy North Park '61

We had a march down memory lane in the October issue. It was a reminder to many of us baby boomers and the many history buffs about World War II. The posters salvaged show the way Americans pulled up their bootstraps and made things happen. Check out Down Memory Lane this month to see some additional posters that sure reminded me what America is all about.

Bob,

Thanks for remembering my birthday. It's been a busy time. Yesterday was my official retirement date, following a nearly ten-year ministry with the West Point Christian Church and some forty years in the ministry overall. I am grateful to God that I'm still healthy and not quite ready for a rocking chair, so on Monday I will begin my new job as Tri-Rivers Family and Community Development Coordinator for the Parent-Child Development Corp. here in West Point. In my new position I will counsel and coach families whose children are in the Head Start Program, write grants and public relations materials, and interact with local partners, especially those in faith communities. My wife, Carolyn, and I will continue to reside at 520 W. Euclid Blvd., West Point, VA 23181. We've just learned that we're expecting a fourth grandchild in May.

Bill Palmer (HHS Class of 1964)

Congrats on your retirement. I though mine would never happen and I'm already in my second year.

Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial

Our team has decided not to publish the current list of names in HixNews again until February. The past three months have seen very few new names added to our list; about 20 or so for both August and September and only 5 in October. This leads us to conclude that we have about exhausted the readership of HixNews as a source for names of the people who qualify for this memorial effort.

As of October 21st, we have a total of 453 names that will be included in the Memorial. We thank all of you who participated in helping the Project Team increase this total from about 150 names when we started monthly publication in HixNews last March. This threefold increase could not have been accomplished without your help.

So, we'll take a 'sabbatical' for the next three months while we pursue other publication sources such as local and regional newspapers and national veteran's magazines for additional names. We'll be back in HixNews again in the New Year with the updated list to see if it generates any additional help from the readership before we move on to the next phase of the project, which will include site selection, a fund raiser and finalization of the Memorial and Memorial Plaque designs.

In the meantime, new names can still be sent by email to Joe Carfora at This email address is being protected from spambots. You need JavaScript enabled to view it..

Thanks for all your help!
Joe Carfora

On behalf of the Hicksville Vietnam War Era Project Team

a note from Tommy Sullivan:

Looks good to me...but I've noticed that many of my friends from Hicksville, however, are not aware of nor are they subscribed to the newsletter.

I've just recently subscribed (after much resistance) to Facebook and people are coming out of the woodwork, some of them from Hicksville.

Maybe we should create a Facebook account for the Project (but let's find someone we know that knows how to do it...I'm just barely able to navigate on it myself) Any thoughts?

Tommy Sullivan

a note from Bob Casale

I think it's a great idea. There are so many things to do on Facebook. And it's incredible how many people have contacted me in the past several months. They do have a special area for causes and the search for Hicksville veterans is a good cause. Perhaps someone out there with time on their hands would volunteer at setting up and administering the account!!! Good idea.

Warm Regards,
Bob Casale

My name is Alfred Merrill.

I attended Nicholai Street School and East Street School. My Mother, Anne Merrill, was a teacher at the Junior High School from the 30's until retirement. I attended both the Junior & Senior High School and graduated in 1943. I Enlisted in the Army Air Corp and trained as a B-29 Flight Engineer but never went overseas.

There is a WWII Veterans monument at the Junior High School. As you face the school, it's located on the right side in front of the building near to the tennis courts. I have a lot of classmates and friends who lost their lives during the war fighting for this great country. These Veterans made the supreme sacrifice. Their names are listed on the plaque situated on the monument. I am one of the lucky ones who survived. I would like to get a picture of the monument and the plaque. I will pay any expense to get a picture or computer graphic. I am 84 years old.

Please help.
Al Merrill

Found the following picture archived'really need someone to take a Picture of the actual plaque

Hi there!

I am a 1972 graduate of Hicksville High School. Living in Suffolk County for most of my adult life, I was thrilled to come across the Hicksville News Letter. It's been fun reading it ' many names are familiar. How would I go about entering a former HHS student into the Hall of Fame? This friend is still living in Hicksville and deserves such this honor more than anyone I can think of. Please advise so that I can submit her qualifications for 2010!

Thanks so much,

The Glass Menagerie Community Choir, under the direction of Susan Glass, Will be performing thier Holiday concert of December 5th, 2009. We will be at our usual performance space, St. Joesph's Church at the corner of 6th Ave. and Washington Pl. in Greenwich Village, NY. The show will contain selections from Mendelssohn, Vaughan Williams, David Buttolph, and others. We will also be premiering a piece by Jonathan David. In addition, there will also be a few excerpts from Carmina Burana by Orff. This is part of a two year project that will culminate with a performance in Greece under the direction of Jonathan Babbcock. The concert will begin at 8 p.m. and tickets at the door are only $ 20.00. Seating is first come first served. Come kick off the holiday season. I'm sure that your spirits will be lifted.

See you there...

Hi,

This is Nancy Johnsen Kaye, class of 59, letting you know that I have been in touch with all the "lost" that I enquired about; that is Carol Krumenacher and Elaine Sotis. Thank you Joyce for the connections. Also anxious to see/hear about the 59 reunion the earlier part of this month.

Thanks for all you all are doing.

While going through pictures for my Mom's service, I found an old class picture of mine. I have the first names of the students listed. I am sure if we check the yearbook, we can some of the last names. The teacher was Mrs. Massa and it was fourth grade in 1959..

Bob,

I live in South Miami that is bordering whatever is left of the Everglades. I work in Broward County (Fort Lauderdale) for the Sheriff's Office. I couldn't attend the class of '61 mini reunion in March because I was working a double shift that day. We, unfortunately, had a road deputy murdered that previous night. I am looking forward to the next reunion when I should be retired by then. Thanks for letting me about Ira Fenig.

Best of everything,
Jerry Bair '61

Bob,

Thank you for sending the lovely birthday card, AND thank you for all you do for the folks that attended Hicksville High School.

The name Bob Casale doesn't ring a bell with me (maybe I'm old), but I lived on 12 Edgewood Drive between 1952 and 1966, so I was intrigued by the last picture in Photo Gallery from this October's alumni newsletter. Bob ' did you live on Edgewood Drive? Were we neighbors? We lived across the street from the Leach's (Jerry and Johnny) who were several years older than my twin Ira and me.

Thanks.
