Hicksville Martial Arts School Among Those Offering Free Workshops
Martial Arts America in Hicksville, in affiliation with Black Belt School International - a leader in martial arts training schools with over 800 locations across the country, took action in January (National Personal Self-Defense Awareness Month). They hosted free martial arts workshops every Saturday last month for children and adults.

O'Brien Elected Fire Commissioner
Gerard "Jerry" O'Brien defeated seated Fire Commissioner Charles Hearon in an election held on December 9th. Votes polled for O'Brien, 670. Votes for Hearon, 618.
Jerry O'Brien will be sworn in at the fire district's reorganization meeting on January 6th, 2009.

Community Mourns Death of George Dillman
Many Hicksville residents and friends gathered together in Whitestone to mourn the death of 26 year old George Dillman. George was a splicer for Con Edison and died in a manhole explosion on October 9th. Con Edison had employed George for about three years. George joined the Hicksville Fire Department in April. Recently, he completed his New York State Firefighter 1 training at the Nassau County Fire Service Academy.

A kleptomaniac woman had been caught shoplifting in a supermarket. She was issued a citation and had to appear in court. She decided to take her "long-suffering" husband for marital support. The prosecution proved that the theft had taken place. The judge told her that, considering her record, he was forced to impose a jail term.
