Janet and I started occasional dating during our HHS days. Janet worked at Food Fair in the Mall, and I worked at H C Bohacks during our high school years. I also mowed lawns during the summers.

The Junior and Senior proms helped jump-start what has become a rewarding lifetime commitment to each other. Janet went on from HHS to graduate from Katherine Gibbs and got an executive secretary job in Manhattan. During this time, she worked for Colgate Palmolive and then Avon Products. I went to Fort Schuyler Maritime college from HHS for a half year, left, and started work at OE McIntyre in Westbury. Still dating, we decided to get married in All Saints church at the young age of 20. Thirteen months later we had our first son Kevin and by the time we were 28 had increased the number of children to four. Kevin was followed by our daughter Kelley and then two more sons, Ryan, and Ian.

Janet stopped working and dedicated herself to motherhood for several years. I worked at McIntyre for about four years, working my way up from card clerk, shipping and receiving clerk, data processing supervisor, and finally programmer (IBM 1401 writing in auto-coder - stone age IT). I also started to take night classes working for a degree. I got a job at Avon as a Junior Systems Analyst in 1966. We had previously moved from our first apartment on East Marie Street in Hicksville to Winoka Village in Huntington Station. After the career change to Avon, we moved to Harbor House in New Rochelle to be closer to the Avon Data Center in Rye NY. I was fortunate to have success at Avon and over the years worked my way up the ranks of management in the IT department. As that department had a couple of moves, we, enjoyed corporate moves that allowed us our first house in Carmel NY and then Princeton Junction NJ. While in Princeton, Janet worked in administrative positions for a tree company and the Princeton Chamber of Commerce. Then in 1978 I was asked to run DP for Avon's Southeast Region in Atlanta GA. So, on we went to Dunwoody GA just outside Atlanta. We were there 44 years. My career continued with eventual moves into sales management with a final assignment to corporate sales support roles overseeing national sales projects and initiatives. Shortly after the move to GA, Janet started working at a small startup that placed doctors. The company took off and so did Janet. She was a major part of their growth; guiding them administratively as they grew to over a billion company. She retired in 2012 as Jackson Healthcare Company VP of Administration. I took early retirement from Avon ending 40 years of service in 2006. Retirement lasted three weeks and they asked me back as a consultant assisting in some downsizing efforts in Avon Japan and Avon United States. That kept me busy for the next 6 years, finally ending in real retirement in 2012. Oh, by the way, I was finally able complete my BS in Business Administration at Brenau University in 1983.

A person and person smilingDescription automatically generated with medium confidenceWow, you suggested a brief update; I apologize. We have managed to successfully raise 4 children that have blessed us with 7 wonderful grandchildren, who, so far have given us 2 great grandchildren (#3 on way in October). We love travel, especially cruises (ocean and river). We recently downsized from our house after 44 years in Dunwoody GA to a smaller house in a 55+ community in Woodstock GA. Our daughter lives in the Netherlands, just outside Amsterdam, so we make a point to try to get to Europe every year. We also host the entire family for a Butcher Family Reunion every three years. Pay for it and they will come. We love it and look forward to it every time.

I stay in touch with Bill Dylewski. We chat on the phone every now and then. I still have a sister (Ellen class of 1966) and brothers on LI. Janet's brothers, Peter, and Brian, both HHS graduates live in the Washington DC area, having work in the government after graduating from college.

Hope you and yours remain well.

Harry Butcher (HHS class 1962)
