* We All Scream for Ice Cream

From Scott Schutzman: "My favorite place for ice cream was Friendly's in High School. However, my parents like the Baskin-Robbins better because Jodi Ruderman worked there in high school and gave them super big portions."

Peter Foster: "I remember the first Carvel that opened in the area. It was on the south side of Old Country Road just east of Eisenhower Park, formerly known as Salisbury Park. A small cone was 10 cents, and a large cone was 20 cents. As kids we all loved ice cream but when mom shopped, she was never able to bring any home. Elm Street was a relatively short walk to the A & P on Broadway in Hicksville and if the shopping was light, we pulled a wheeled home shopping cart to and from Broadway. If the shopping order was to be large, the trip was timed for dad to come with the car after work. At the time we were a one car family. To make matters worse, the refrigerator we had was a GE on 4 legs with a freezer that only held two ice cube trays that was the rage in 1941 when the house was built for mom and dad with no room to store ice cream. It is interesting to note that when I sold the house on Elm Street, that refrigerator was in the basement and still working in 2000."

Eugene Lewan:  "Peter, they sure knew how to build appliances to last back in the day. I remember the Carvel on Jerusalem Ave across from the Grand Union shopping center, and then a store front at the West Village Green. My dad was partial to the Flying Saucers. I also recall the commercials featuring founder Tom Carvel. Good Times."

Wendy Girnis: "I loved going to Friendly's or Carvel for Ice Cream.  At Friendly's, I always got the hot fudge sundae.  At Carvel, it was a chocolate soft serve cone with sprinkles, not jimmies. I liked the rainbow ones.  If we were bringing ice cream home from Carvel, it was the Flying Saucers."
