Gratitude From Allen Stippell's Family
Allen G. Stippell
The family of Allen G. Stippell would like to thank all of those who offered
their support, love, gifts and condolences following his unexpected death
this past April.
Some of you had come to know him through the various teams he coached,
church committees he ran or events he organized. If he has touched your
life in one of these ways, then you know how fair, enthusiastic and totally
dedicated he was. Maybe you knew him though business dealings, and if so,
you know that he was hard-working and honest. And those of you who have
been his friends since high school know what a loyal friend he was.
There are not enough words to express how Al touched this world. Unfortunately,
Al was so busy taking care of everyone else, he neglected to take care
of himself. But to think about it - Al didn't know any other way to live
his life.
-
The words of Mother Teresa are a reminder of
how Al lived his life:
"We are not called upon by God to do great things. We are called upon by
God to do little things with great love."
The overwhelming response from all who knew Al was very comforting to his
wife Sue, and sons, John and Michael. We thank you for honoring his memory.

News, Notes and Memories
-
My memory is pretty good, but 1944 was quite a
long time ago. I graduated from Hicksville High
in June 1944. I worked at the Bank of Hicksville--right
up against the LIRR at that time--for about 4 years.
Married Robert Youden in 48 (I think) and attended
Katherine Gibbs School in Boston for one year.
My maiden name was Cecelia Schwarz--no T. and Eugene
Levitt, Lucille Keller, and Virginia Gordon were
in my graduating class, along with Robert Hamilton
Youden.
I will be 78 on November 30, 2004, and am pretty
healthy. Harrison Horn, my second husband, died
this June after 34 years of marriage. I know that
there are still quite a few from the class of 44
who are alive, although we lost many boys during
the war.
My brother, Conrad Jean Schwarz, is living in
New Mexico and would like to get in touch with
Donald Kant if anyone knows Don's whereabouts.
I am curious whether Annie Taormina is still alive.
My brother George Schwarz (went to Farmingdale
High School) was very close to Salvatore and Peter
Taormina who hailed from Plainview, just I did.
Palo Alto, California, is beautiful. The weather
is better, but Long Island has swimable beaches
and variable weather. A pretty nice place, really.
It was wonderful to get news of the old school.
Sincerely,
Cecelia M. Horn nee Schwarz

had our annual Smith St. block Party
yesterday.(Sun. 8/22/04) Great time. On the block
I grew up on. There are about 10 original homeowners
still living there including my mother. The block
got built in 1953 so that's impressive. A lot of
the people that have moved away came back also including
some from Florida. A few of us are going to get together
again in a few weeks to have a backyard barbeque
and talk about old times and have a few cocktails!
Hope this finds you all well.
I've been doing things rather tough here in CA for
the past 18 months and have decided that it's time
to head on back to Oz after being here in the States
for almost 5 years! I miss my kids & grandkids
terribly, & having been here, I'm sure you will
all understand my decision. So, I've resigned from
my job & will be going back to Florida to visit
family & relatives and then heading back down
under!
I really wish I had the opportunity to attend one
of the school reunions while I was here! For anyone
who ever has the chance to come to OZ, please make
sure you look me up! It's a wonderful place not only
to visit but to live!
So, all the very best to you all & I will still
look forward to receiving the Hixnews each month!

Many Hicksville alumni complain that we dont
highlight their year or their decade or their time
slot.
The editors of the newsletter are only tasked with
editing, not writing. We put together the information
provided by you, the readers, and pass it along so
that everyone can enjoy catching up on the past (the
40s, 50s, 60s), or looking to the
future when it comes to a reunion, a gathering or
a get together.
Pat thought it would be interesting if you wrote
something special about your time slot. One interesting
aspect of time as it passed in Hicksville
was the dramatic change in dress codes. Wearing jeans
to school in the 50s and 60s was forbidden.
Wearing a shirt that had a logo on it, definitely
NO!!
What was it like in the 40s
perhaps someone
out there can relate to that?
There is a very interesting man that visits my store
every so often. His name is Arthur Leahy. Arthur
was drafted in 1944 and never received his diploma
because he was still in high school
remember
the Boogie Woogie Bugle Boy of Company B??? No, that
wasnt Arthur. His story of what transpired
last year is very interesting. Think Ill ask
him to write it down on paper.
How about some of you complainers??? Why dont
you write something about your decade? We are eager
to print it.
Regards,
The Editors
PS from Pat Our database spans from 1933
through 1993. If just one person from each decade
would write a little something, what a wonderful
history of Hicksville we could have.
Please keep sending your news, notes and memories.
Pat Koziuk Driscoll, 1956
It's nice to see old friends and it's awfully nice
to reminisce.
I use the word nice because it would be nice to
see some of our classmates whom we have not seen
for a long time. I'm always eager for a get together.
There are others amongst HHS grads that feel the
same.
If any one is interested in another mini reunion
or even a mega reunion, send an email to me as time
permits - bufbob@juno.com
We can set it up...
When you email, please indicate what you would consider
a good month or a good date...would you want to get
together on the island...a cruise out of Florida...go
to Las Vegas.
Give me an idea...
Without support, nothing will ever occur. Without
answers, nothing will ever get started.
Warm Regards
Bob Casale

Favorite Teachers

Hi,
Helen Mangialomini Coulmas (60) here. My vote for favorite teacher from
HHS is the one and only Mr. Donald Holmes, master of the paintbrush.
The best teacher ever, because he was on the students side always!!!!!!!!
I remember him telling me to sign his DH on a pass if I wanted to get out
of a class and go to his, LOL I spent a lot of time in the Art Room. Not
only did I learning great drawing and painting methods but I found a true
friend. Someone I could confide in when I had problems and I always had
problems, what teenager doesn't..lol...He always seemed to know the right
thing to say to make me feel better. Unfortunately it wasn't enough to
get me into the private school he recommended (my parents had 5 kids and
no $$) so like the dumb kid I was I dropped out!!!! It took me 20 years
to go back and get my diploma but I did it.... I regret not getting back
to the school to see him again but his memory is strong in my heart and
always will be.
I nominate Donald Holmes, Art Teacher / Friend for The Best Hicksville
High School Teacher Ever..................................

My name's Bob Wesley (Gleason, 60), and there
was one teacher at HHS that has guided my life
more than any other. That teacher was Mr. Harry
Gouse, the head of the music dept.
He always took a special interest in me because I loved playing music more
than anything else in the world. His influence on me and his kind words
of encouragement set me on a path in the music industry that still lasts
today.
I can remember him telling me about how he played his trumpet in nightclubs
on weekends, and just the thought of me doing that kept me practicing to
be the best that I could be. As it turned out, my practicing paid off because
I've been a professional entertainer for more than 35 years. I spent more
than 20 years as a union musician traveling to more places than I could
have ever dreamed of traveling. Many winters were spent working the cruise
lines out of Miami making 10-12 Caribbean cruises while other folks up
here were freezin' - (up here is Dannemora, NY, just a few miles from the
Canadian border).
I played the guitar and keyboard as well as doing all the lead vocals,
and I still play today as a single entertainer all over the North Country
and the Montreal Quebec area. It's a part-time thing now, but when I was
working full time it was 4-6 nights a week, 50 weeks a year. I guess you
could call that a musical career.
I love the newsletter, and thanks for the opportunity to talk about the
man that set me on a journey that has lasted me a lifetime.
