Attention All HixNews Readers!!

Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial Project Update

Thanks to the efforts of the HixNews readership we added 15 new names in May for a new total of 527. And, this report is only as of May 13 after which the author was out of town for the rest of the month. Any postings received after May 13th will now appear in the July 1 issue of HixNews. Please see the Veteran's Section of this issue for the latest information on the project and what you can do to help it succeed.

Thank you,
Joe Carfora, on behalf of the Project Team

There seems to be some controversy about the mini tornado that Hicksville experienced years ago. The actual place where it touched down was in question. I just re-read Billy Fuchs' bio sketch and his comment solves the mystery once and for all...

"My older brother " Mike ('59 graduate) was the first employee at Carvel on Jerusalem Avenue in Hicksville and happened to be working there when the tornado hit. This was almost directly across from the Allied Shopping Center. I remember visiting the Princess Bakery next to the drug store to pick up one of their strawberry cheesecakes. It was the best I've ever had. Even better than my own homemade.

Well, here it is almost midnight in AZ on 4/30/2010 and I just finished reading the May newsletter. Another amazing job well done. (Gosh I wish I still looked like my graduation picture...I was shocked to see it as I scrolled down the home page.)  What a great team you all are.... I look forward to working on our 50th reunion for the class of '61. Thanks for giving me more wonderful memories and helping old friends reconnect.

Lillian Manzo Ramirez

Some Comments regarding the pictures from the mini reunion for the class of 1961 held back in April on Long island.... plus comments about the reunion plus some notes from alumni to alumni

A note to Sandy Boos Koch (1960) from Betty Erickson

Hi Sandy

Are you from the Boos family that used to live on Carmen Ave and Levittown Parkway?  My family knew a family that lived around there.

Betty Erickson '60

A note to Sandy from Steve Alfieri (1960)

Hi Sandy:
I remember us being in several homerooms and classes together at HHS. My wife and I live in North Dartmouth, MA. We raised a son and daughter and have five grandchildren. Let us know your latest when you get a chance.

Steve Alfieri '60

A note to Sandy from Bill Keenan

Sandy,
A number of years ago I was in Sarasota, Florida and met one of the members of the Boos Brothers family that had the nursery by Wantagh State Parkway. Are you part of the same family or related to?

Bill Keenan

A note to Linda Mastrosanti (1961) from Antoinette Colascione

A note to Linda from Dennis Naso

I saw that you left a note. Now, I cannot find it. Anyhow, many had a good time and signed up to help for the 50th. Sounds good to me. Meetings should alternate between Suffolk and Nassau. Hope that is okay with all? ! Hope you guys found your car ok. I never knew Pat was so funny.

How many months out should I plan the next mini? Maybe July on a Sunday????
Let me know your thoughts.
See you soon.

Dennis Naso '61

Thank you so much for this wonderful and ever improving newsletter. Henry you have made an outstanding contribution to an already successful publication. I may be a bit prejudice because you are my classmate. HixNews, thank you so much for the lovely anniversary card for Tony and I. Our long and happy marriage, another successful product of our HHS tenure. Also want to let our "fellow" classmates know that many on the reunion committee still get together. Since our 50th in Oct. Joyce Anglim, Betty Ann, Tony and I, Carl Probst and Joan Gabriel and Ghyll Owen Simoneschi, have gotten together for lunch and a gabfest. Warm and wonderful. Again, thank you for a job well done and much appreciated.

The below hyperlink will take you to a reunion the Rascals had recently. My cousin, Don Casale, who is a recording engineer, did some work with Felix Cavlaliere and Eddie Brigati.

Thank you very much for the birthday wish and for all of your hard work every month in putting together the newsletter. You guys are great and much appreciated! Keep up the good work.

I was excited to see Bob Leo's name in last month newsletter. We doubled for our prom in '65 and were in homeroom together.  Please pass my E-mail on to him so that I can catch up with him.

Thanks

The attached photo was in April's newsletter.  I was able to identify a few guys.  They were from HHS Class of '67, except for Bob Kirsch who I don't believe graduated with us.  I knew him from Lee Avenue Elementary.  I recognize a few other faces but will have to go through my yearbook again.  Maybe Martin can help if he hasn't already.

Henry, Recently a good friend of mine, in Virginia, showed me his High School News Letter. One of the advantages of Dormont's News Letter is that it enables any school member to, DIRECTLY, communicate with any other Class Mate in the directory. Also, I thought that the School Photo of students is helpful, and would help in remembering other students, whom some Class Mates may not have seen in many years. Everyone will recognize the school photo of Class Mates. The address is WWW.DHS1963.Com. I commend the site to your attention. I am sure that they would be able to help you with information on Dormont's site. You are doing a fine job, but even excellence can be improved upon.   Best Wishes

 ------------------------------

Dear Ken,

Thank you for your note. It gives me the opportunity to clarify both the HixNews policy concerning communication between our subscribers, as well as my own role on the editorial staff.

The guiding rule at HixNews is protection of our subscribers' personal information, principally our members' email addresses. Many, if not most of our readers do not want to make public their email addresses. We must honor such sentiments. Since we need our subscribers' email addresses for subscription to the editors' announcements (such as this one), we are honor-bound not to reveal our subscribers' addresses, unless we have their permission to do so.

Nevertheless, our members have means by which they can communicate with other members. First of all, we have two types of subscriptions: subscription to "HixNews" allows one to broadcast messages to everyone who is also subscribed to HixNews; subscription to "HixNews2" does not (it is designed for those people who prefer to restrict their incoming email to the editors' announcements only -- generally, just the monthly announcement that our latest issue of the Newsletter has been published).

Second of all, we keep a current online list of all our subscribers (both to HixNews and HixNews2) at: HixNews Members (which is accessible by all). Anyone can peruse this list of names, which is sorted by year of graduation and alphabetically by name. If you find someone on this list with whom you wish to communicate, send an email to the editors, and we will forward your request to that person. If the latter chooses to contact you, he (or she) will have your email address.

As to my role on the editorial staff, I am actually the newest addition to the staff (I succeeded Pat Koziuk Driscoll), having volunteered to take on the tasks associated with maintenance of our subscription database. As such, I have a limited role in producing the Newsletter itself.

Best, Henry

Note from Bob Casale...In your note, Ken, you say, "Also, I thought that the School Photo of students is helpful, and would help in remembering other students, whom some Class Mates may not have seen in many years. Everyone will recognize the school photo of Class Mates."

Easier said than done. We don't have access to every yearbook. I wish I had copies of all so I could include pictures. It would be nice if one person from each class who has a yearbook would be the designated scanner. This way, I can ask for a picture and it could be sent to us, then we can include a picture.

Any volunteers to become designated scanner???

Dear Classmates and friends,

Our classmate, and a very close friend of mine,

       Carl Margolis

will not make our 50th reunion. Carl passed away on Thursday 22 April 2010. Ironically for a person with such an active mind, Carl died from a brain hemorrhage, brought about by incorrect dosage of the medication coumadin. Carl is survived by his wife Sharon, his son Cliff and his sister Lynn.

While at Hicksville High, I believe it was Carl who got the highest score on the math SAT's. Not surprisingly Carl obtained a full scholarship to Cooper Union, a small but highly prestigious engineering school in NYC. However, he soon became restless and moved to California where he attended California State Polytechnic Institute in San Luis Obispo. He loved the sunshine and mild climate of Southern California.  Consistent with his life as a non-conformist, Carl completed all but a very minor requirement for a degree in electrical engineering. He put substance above form and didn't want a piece of paper (his college degree) to influence what people thought of him. As you might expect Carl was not a fan of holiday newsletters and would often chide me when I sent one.

After college, Carl worked for computer design firms on Long Island and later in southern California near his home in Costa Mesa. I had the honor of being best man at Carl and Sharon's wedding in Brooklyn on January 26,1969. Cliff was born in June 1976.

While at Hicksville High Carl loved to debate virtually any subject, often after ping pong with Bob Schaal and me or over the phone with Jack Gould. He never lost his interest in tackling difficult subjects and was a shining example of a lifelong learner. His interests went beyond intellectual pursuits. While still in his teens he walked more than 50 miles in about 15 hours and traveled with friends in a small and leaky wooden boat from Oyster Bay to Ocean City, NJ. In the past few years he joined several "skeptic" groups to pursue his interest in learning and debate and would often debate with me by phone (I may have bested him on only one occasion). His intellectual interests included evolution vs. creationism, climate change (I'm the tree hugger), the case for nuclear power, human powered transportation vs. the auto and when computers would control the world. He had begun to tell me about his solution to the Israel / Palestine crisis just before he died.

I suppose you could say that we are all unique, but Carl was far more unique than most. I will miss him very much.

Please take care of yourselves and your loved ones,

Henry (Hank) Landau

Hi Bob and Gang,

How very thoughtful of you to send an Anniversary Card to us...May 1st was our 45th Anniversary and we took a 4-day cruise to celebrate the actual date!  Thank you for your good wishes!

Barbara (Di Bella) and John Dowd '62

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the anniversary card. My wife Renee and I were married 45 years on April 4. We met at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn where I got a BFA in graphic design and illustration (returning later for a MS in Package Design) and Renee got a BFA in Interior Design.

Attached is a photo of us taken last December in Zurich, Switzerland. Those are the Alps in the background. We have a married daughter and three grandchildren in Switzerland and visit them several times a year. Our son-in law grew up on Long Island and works for a Swiss company.

You and the rest of the staff are doing a great job with the Hix Web site. Even though I've lived in New Jersey for 41 years I've been a constant visitor to Hicksville since returning to the US after serving in the Army a long time ago. My mother lived in the same house where I grew up until her death this March. She lived in Hicksville for 58 years.

I'm looking forward to seeing many classmates from the class of 1960 at our 50 year reunion this June. Please pass along my phone number and email address if any of my classmates want to talk about our high school days. Thanks.

Your former classmate Bob Monette (Class of '56) would like to hear from you. His email address is shown in the header of this message. We have suppressed your email address in the "blind copy" (Bcc) of this message so as to protect your privacy.

--------------------

Hi Bob

I was sent an email from HixNews that Bob Monette wants to get in touch with me. I cannot get through to him using the email address you provided. Please send him my email address. I came full circle after 55 years back in Hicksville off Woodbury Road...10 blocks from Hillside Terrace where I grew up after 16 years in Florida. Ray Baninski and I never got to take Pat (Koziuk) out for lunch in Florida. She got sick before it happened.

John Hattenback  '56

Editor note...just sent a note off to Bob Monette...

Greetings!!

I was looking at some older photos I had taken and thought folks may get a kick out of seeing them since I do not have everyone's e-mail address.  I will do the best I can on names in these two photos.

Marilyn Bowles '66

The first photo was taken in 1980 when a few of the class of 65, 66, 67 got together:

Standing: Joe (Uniondale HS '66) Bobbi Yberg Noeth, Artie Noeth, Joy Vanderhoven, Donal Cooney, Alan nave, Terri Hill, Jackie Kurz Hill.

Seated:  Marilyn Bowles, Kate Bruton, Kathy Kocher

Reunion Two was in 1984 at Salsbury Park:

(if memory serves me right!!)

Bob,
Another great issue as always.  I noted Ed Rivoire's note and picture and we have all his information for the Vietnam War Era Project, except for where he served and if aboard ship, where he was most of the time during his active duty period.  If you can forward him this email, perhaps he can send me this information for the list.
Thanks!

I will be retiring the end of June this year and don't want to miss an issue.

Dear Bob and editors,

As you know the class of 1960 will be having their reunion this coming June 5, 2010, and it will be the first reunion since 1970.  A few on the planning committee and myself were thinking that it would be nice to have a compilation of short biographies from each classmate to share their life experiences.  Submission of these short biographies, via email, would not be limited to only those attending the reunion.

Since HIXNEWS already has the infrastructure, we were wondering if you would help to compile the electronic file and make it available for download as a PDF in one of the monthly newsletters.   I know that we are a little late with this idea and your help would be greatly appreciated, however, a no is OK.

Bios would be brief (100-200 words).  Kathy Corey is standing by with all known email addresses ready to send the request for the Bio's to the 1960 classmates.

What other military pictures are you looking for?
I am sure a lot of us served during the cold war period like myself, 1955 to 1958.

I've collected quite a few shots and don't need any additional pictures at this time. Did you view the presentation? The link was on the note to you. You are not listed on the Hicksville Vietnam War Era Veterans. I'm going to have Joe Carfora get in touch with you.

Thanks for your help.

Bob,
Yes, I reviewed the presentation. I really enjoyed viewing it. I knew that some Hicksville graduates lost their lives in Vietnam, but didn't realize there were so many. My active duty (US Navy) ended in 1958 and was on inactive reserves till 1963 when I received my discharge. I guess I was one of the lucky ones, I was never called back.
MY brother Mike (I believe he graduated in 1966) was career Navy. He served some time over in Vietnam. I believe he receives the Hicksville newsletter.
Charlie

---------------------
Hi Charlie,
If you can please send me the following information, I'll be glad to include your name and data on our Vietnam War Era Memorial Project List: Full Name:  First, Middle Initial or Middle Name, Last Branch of Service. Location where you spent most of your active duty time. Active Duty Dates. If you served in Vietnam, were you wounded in action (WIA)? Year graduated from Hicksville High.
Thanks!
Joe Carfora '62

Joe,
The following is the info you wanted:
Charles P. Cava
US Navy RM3
USS Leyte CV-32
1955 to 1958
(did not serve in Vietnam)
HHS Class of 1955
Charlie
------------------------

Charlie,
Unfortunately, the information you provided shows that you do not qualify for this memorial.  We are honoring everyone who served who at least entered high school while living in Hicksville and served anywhere in the world during the Vietnam War Era, defined by our government as when we publicly had troops on the ground over there.  That period is 1961 through 1973.  The reason for also honoring those who served during this period, but did not go to Vietnam, is that they served in support of the troops who were on the ground over there and also were subject to being sent over also, while on active duty.
Since your active duty service ended in 1958, you do not qualify
Should you have additional questions for me on this, please let me know.  Thanks also for your quick response.
Regards,
Joe

Charlie
Remember, please, when you get home, please send me the photos from your military service. We want to include that in our ongoing power point presentation.

Regards

Buffalo Bob

On February 9th, 2003, the Hicksville Newsletter Mailing List had 410 subscribers.
---------------------------------------------------------------------

We had a note from Rosa Szendy Patterson from the class of 1961. Her son, Robert, Has a disease that is catastrophic. More detail will follow. This note is to advise there was a fundraiser to benefit Robert's disease. Many of our alumni had no idea that Rosa was under constant duress. Most of us had no idea about the fundraiser. Some did, however, and participated by attending and supporting Rosa. I questioned Rosa about Robert's affliction and Rosa was kind enough to let me know more about her dilemma and Robert's disease.

It has been a difficult few months. My son, Robert, who was never very sick and never in a hospital was working 22 days straight in February to save for his wedding (that will be in October this year). He had very bad headaches for a few weeks, felt sick and began throwing up one weekend Feb 20.... he went to the doctor on Monday...his blood pressure was 180/111...the doctor sent him home with muscle relaxants...that night Robert threw up bile and when he went to Stony Brook Hospital on Tuesday morning, his blood pressure was 230/127... He was near death; by a stroke or heart failure...his kidneys were failing.  They put a tube in his neck to do plasma transfusion and then dialysis. After a week in ICU, 4 days of plasma and kidney dialysis and a blood transfusion, he went to a regular room. By the end of the second week, he had had the tube in the neck taken out and a new one put in his upper chest, a fistula put into his arm and a kidney biopsy done. The doctors determined that Robert had a rare disease RPGN Rapid Progressive Glomularnephritus. His kidneys were gone.end stage renal failure. It happens within 2 weeks and as little as 2 days. Robert has since had tubes put into his abdomen for dialysis (PD peritoneal dialysis). This is so that he can do the dialysis at home ... 10 hours every night instead of the 3 times a week with took up more than 16 daytime hours. He was thinking that it would be better so that he might eventually go back to work.

He did not have paid time off at hid job and luckily he did have hospitalization, but he did not have coverage for medicines. On April 10, Robert's 32nd birthday, a fundraiser was held. It was wonderful to see so many people there. Friends of friends and even some of my high school classmates, who I haven't seen in 49 years, showed their support. Since then, 9 people tested as kidney donors and all are good candidates. The doctors at NY Columbia Presbyterian Hospital said that a kidney transplant should be done as soon as possible.... tentative date is June 1st.  Robert has been so strong, never complaining, always saying thank you to all the doctors and nurses even when getting shots and difficult procedures.  He has not been feeling well lately and we pray that he will be strong enough for the transplant operation.

We ask that you say a prayer for him and his fiancée, Melissa... they are going through so much.

Also, at this time, our daughter Alicia, who is 38, is expecting her first baby by Caesarian section just a few days before Robert's operation. Alicia is having a baby girl and she will be our third grandchild in less than 2 years.

We are counting our blessings and continuing, as we all must do in hard times, with faith and hope.

 Love, Rosa

Thanks for remembering me with such a lovely card!
I really appreciate your thoughtfulness.

Hey Bob.
It's me Jennifer (Pat Koziuk daughter) I wanted to thank you for a great article in the news... Christopher and I cried a lot during the reading and the pictures (nice pics)... Good Cry—we all miss my mom. And you are so correct on the baking... She loved to bake and make new recipes; I cannot tell you how the newspaper made her feel so much better knowing others needed her. I still cannot believe she was working on the last newsletter up until a couple of days before she went to Heaven. I talk to her a lot and lord knows I am to young to be with out my mom and best friend so I believe she is with me all the time. She loved all of you with the Hix news and she always talked about everyone and how she found old friends and it just would brighten up her face. Thanks for remembering my mom—I know she was and is the best Mom ever.
God Bless you all
Love
Jennifer

Hi, Bob - was just checking my email.  Haven't gotten Hix News paper for the past 2 months.  Is it not being printed anymore?  Regarding my brother's death (in February).   I keep trying to get hold of the funeral parlor for a copy of the obit, but not getting any response.  Also Dicks last name (as well as what mine was before I got married 62 years ago) is spelled Eisemann.  Hope all is well up in New York .  We haven't been up that way in ages.  Speaking of going anywhere, I gu4ess our traveling is out of the question.  George has dementia (sp?) and not doing well at all.  He had been in the hospital (again) and then 4 weeks of rehab, then 2-1.2 weeks of home health and now - I'm the caregiver so to speak.  Believe me - it's not easy.  I had the locks changed on the doors so George couldn't "go for a walk" without me knowing.  I can't leave him home alone and have to take him with me for any errands, shopping, etc.  All I can say is whatever I have to do for George is me as caregiver.  Also I know that there are others worse off.  Didn't mean to get carried away.  Sorry.  Keep up the good work and take care of yourself.  God bless.  Bea (Eisemann) Baldwin

What was his middle name and when was he born?

Where was he born?

Where was he living when he passed?

I might be able to locate with that information.

Hi, Bob

Thank you so much for the info re: newsletter.  I don't know why I had trouble pulling it up on my pc.  Maybe it was a "senior moment".
Regarding my brother, here's some info for you. He was born in Mineola , LI, NY on June 25, 1927 and graduated from Hicksville High in 1945 and immediately went into the US Navy. If I could get my printer to work, I could send you more info that I received from my sister-in-law.  I'm contacting my computer guy to come & help me out ASAP. Thanks again. More later (I hope)

Hi Bob
The photos are of Charlie Cava class of 1955. Charlie volunteers with the Marion County Sheriffs office in Ocala Fl. The program is called COPS (Citizen Observation patrol) Charlie has been in the program the last 5 years. The COPS program is the eyes and ears of the Sheriffs office to help insure the safety of the community. They patrol in special marked Sheriffs office cars in both residential and commercial areas, usually twice a month for 4/5 hours each patrol.  They also help out in other activities above and beyond normal patrol duties.  Charlie recently did some extra training in a program called VERT (Volunteer Emergency Response Team) Charlie is shown receiving his certificate of completion for the ten week course from Sheriff Ed Dean. The program included traffic control, under the supervision of a Deputy, CPR and other duties. Shown below is a Sergeant with the K9 unit.

Good Morning Y'all (as we say in the south)
I am excited to see the coming together of our class and the mini-reunions.
Unfortunately for those of us living in Florida it is nearly impossible to make those reunions.
With that said, I would really enjoy setting up a Florida Class of '61 so that we can have "our own" mini reunions.  If any of the class members are interested in discussing - emailing me, I would sincerely love to hear from them and work something out.   My wife is from the class of '67 if there are any class members here also.

Hi Bob,
I could write you every month about how great it is to read the monthly Hicksville High School Newsletter. The memories keep flowing as I read notes from and about our graduating class of 1961.  The notes are good, but when I see the pictures it gives me such a satisfying feeling. The May edition had some photos of the Senior Year Pictures and current pictures of our 1961 Class. That was good to see.
Sorry I couldn't make the mini Reunion that Dennis Naso coordinated. And, unfortunately I will be on vacation when the next one is scheduled for July. I will make one of these reunions, just to be there in person and share memories and good times.
I was saddened to hear about the passing of Judy Tisdale that was sent in by Rosa.
Also, I saw that Hugh Hansen, (class of 1964) just joined our HHH newsletter group. Just want to say hi to Hugh. I was always over by his house as Jack Hansen and Phil Leonhard and I used to hang around together often. In fact Phil and I are still in touch with each other.
Please pass on my hello to Valerie Clemens. I saw her picture with some other of her friends in the May edition.
Thanks again to you and all the HHS Newsletter group for keeping our memories and fun times fresh in our minds.
Bill Canham (Class of 1961)

Attached are two photos my husband Roger (Whitaker) snapped during our road trip to the southwest a few weeks ago. We had a chance to have lunch with Pam Weickmann Swanson '58 in Scottsdale, AZ. (The photo was taken outside of the White Chocolate Grill--a great place that Pam recommended!). On our way home, we met Roger Downey '58 and his wife Mary for dinner in Albuquerque, New Mexico and had a wonderful time talking about our high school years and beyond.

Hi Bob
Please note that I am listed on the "In Memoriam List" in the Newsletter, but also listed as an active recipient of the Newsletter.  I am "alive & kicking" and still live in South Florida.  Life has been a little hectic this past year because of my husband's illness, and I have not had much time to communicate with anyone.  Hoping that will change soon, but in the mean time I do so much enjoy keeping up to date with all of my Hicksville High alumni.  Sorry I will not be able to attend the Class of '60 reunion, but know I am looking forward to pictures and a full report of all the fun I am sure everyone is going to have.  Please give my best to all.

Susan Gilbert Finder '60

--------------------------------------------------------------

I apologize.

Kathy McDonald must be going crazy trying to coordinate this reunion. Sending notes to a myriad of people can be confusing especially when trying to keep several different columns of records.

I, too, am glad you're alive and kicking.

I cannot attend either. I can't abandon Joyce, who has Alzheimers. We finally have a routine and to change that would be disastrous.

Good to hear from you and sorry about your hubby.

Life's a bitch, then you die.

I really am enjoying it (the newsletter)!

Due to lack of interest, the proposed tour of Hicksville HS has been cancelled.  Ms. Annette Zasa, a retired teacher from HHS has graciously agreed to meet with us and discuss her insights on HHS during her 30-year tenure.  She knew many of our former teachers.

We will meet Ms Zasa at 2PM on June 5th at the entrance of the Terrace Room, at the lower level, of the Hyatt Regency hotel.

Feel free to contact me with any questions.

This is the Flag that Doesn't Fly.

In the fields where the flag is planted, there are...9 plus miles of flower fields that go all the way to the ocean. Seed companies grow the flowers. It's a beautiful place, close to Vandenberg Air Force Base. Santa Barbara, California.

The dimensions of the flag, as described in Executive Order #10834, are maintained to the proper flag dimensions The floral flag is 740 feet long and 390 feet wide. The flag covers 6.65 acres.

It is the first Floral Flag to be planted with 5 pointed stars. The stars are comprised of White Larkspur. Each star is 24 feet in diameter. Each stripe is 30 feet wide. It is estimated that the flag contains more than 400,000 Larkspur plants with 4 - 5 flower stems each for a total of more than 2 million flowers.

When you look at the flag, think about the freedoms we have because our troops fighting distant battles guarantee us those freedoms.

While reflecting on the symbol the flag represents, say a prayer for our troops and wish them a safe journey home.

Thank you so much for the birthday greetings. These personal touches, along with all of the hard work that you do on the Newsletter, make all of you a very special group. Your efforts are very much appreciated.

Dear Arnie (Gould)

I saw you note in HIX news and had to write.  A few days ago I saw an opening for a new musical called "Band Geeks" and the name brought back fond memories!

I do remember the trip to Rochester for the music competition.  What fun we had in the bus, in band practice, Mr. Pellerin, and all the trips we took with band at HHS. After your class graduated in '64, band was never as much fun!

I live in CT, have been married for 40 years, have 2 kids, one married and lives in Portland, OR and one is in grad school at Duke getting his MBA.  I was a teacher, stay at home mom, travel agent throughout the years.  My husband is an architect.  We met at college; I went to Russell Sage and he went to RPI.

Hope this email finds you happy & healthy and still full of fun and life!

Regards,

Elin Fischman Lawrence '65 HHS

Dear Alumni and Friends

As the current newsletter is posted to the internet on May 31, Ted and his team of bike riders will be preparing to start the 25th day of their ride across country.

They will have arrived in Carbondale , Illinois and completed 1,174 miles of their over 4,000 mile trek to Oregon .

Ted is doing this to raise money for America's VetDogs who provide support to our veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan .

His goal is within reach regarding funds raised but needs our help.

If you can afford to pledge a dollar or two, that would help tremendously.

He was complaining to me that he's losing weight, burning about 7,000 calories per day. The entire team is experiencing the same phenomena and they are eating ferociously in an attempt to maintain their weight and stamina.

Anything you can do would be appreciated.

Go to http://www.vetdogs.org/

Thanks
Warm Regards
Buffalo Bob Casale

p.s. when the newsletter for July goes to press, they will be in Rawlins , Wyoming with 2,653 miles of road behind them.

Editor Note....There is a new link on the "Links" page. On the top of the home page, click on Links...go to the very bottom of the page and see Old Time TV. Click on that and enjoy.

And Since We're Talking About the Oil Leak...

A man was driving down the road and ran out of gas.
Just at that moment, a bee flew in his window.
The bee said, 'What seems to be the problem?'
'I'm out of gas,' the man replied.
The bee told the man to wait right there and flew away.
Minutes later, the man watched as an entire swarm of bees flew to his car.
They flew into his gas tank.
After a few minutes, the bees flew out.

'Try it now,' said one bee.
The man turned the ignition key and the car started right up.
'Wow!' the man exclaimed, 'what did you put in my gas tank'?
The bee answered.

To Bob and the gang at Hix news.
Thank you for the lovely card. It is so nice that the HIX news gang sends these out.
I am still working at the age of 67 but at this time next year I will be retired and spending my day at poolside, at the TIKI Bar.

I can still remember my sweet sixteen party given to me by friends, at my house. We had a new finished basement with bar. That was the trend! I think we had been at a park for the day and somehow the gang got to my house before I did. My mother asked me to get something from the basement and at the bottom of the stairs were all of my friends. What a great memory.

CHRISTIANS HAVE ONLY ONE SPOUSE. THIS IS CALLED MONOTONY.
---------------------------------------------

In the hospital, the relatives gathered in the waiting room, where a family member lay gravely ill. Finally, the doctor came in looking tired and somber.

"I'm afraid I'm the bearer of bad news," he said as he surveyed the worried faces. "The only hope left for your loved one at this time is a brain transplant. It's an experimental procedure, very risky, but it is the only hope. Insurance will cover the procedure, but you will have to pay for the BRAIN."

The family members sat silent as they absorbed the news. After a time, someone asked, 'How much will a brain cost?'

The Doctor quickly responded, '$5,000 for a male brain; $200 for a female brain.' The moment turned awkward. Some of the men actually had to 'try' to not smile, avoiding eye contact with the women.

A man unable to control his curiosity, finally blurted out the question everyone wanted to ask, 'Why is the male brain so much more than a female brain?'

The doctor smiled at the childish innocence and explained to the entire group, 'It's just standard pricing procedure.
You See, We have to price the female brains a lot lower because they've been used.'

Computer Tip In Memory of Bob Gleason Wesley

Ah yes, another case of software saving us from ourselves... There are a bunch of reasons why you might see the dreaded "Red X" instead of an image while viewing a web page with Internet Explorer or an email with Outlook.

Here are some possible reasons why the Red X may appear, and suggested fixes for each:

Problem: The "Show Pictures" setting has been turned off in Internet Explorer.
Solution: In Internet Explorer's Tools menu, click Internet Options, then click the Advanced tab. Make sure the Show Pictures check box is selected under Multimedia, and click OK.

Problem: Your anti-virus or firewall is a little too uppity. Check to see if your anti-virus or firewall software has a privacy setting to "disable web bugs".
Solution: Uncheck or turn it off. (The term "web bug" is a misnomer. They are really just harmless tiny images on a web page or email, sometimes used for tracking purposes.)

Problem: Your Internet Explorer security settings are set too high, preventing you from accessing the web site which hosts the image.
Solution: Reset to the default security settings. In Internet Explorer, click on Tools -> Internet Options -> Security -> Default Level.

Problem: You've installed the Windows XP/SP2 updates and you're being bitten by the "Block images and other external content in HTML e-mail" security option. This is automatically turned ON in Outlook Express after you install Windows XP/SP2.
Solution: Click on Tools -> Options -> Security. Then UNCHECK the "Block images and other external content" check box, and click OK.

Problem: You are the SENDER and others are complaining that they can't see images in emails you sent,
Solution: In Outlook Express, Click Tools -> Options -> Send. Under Mail Sending Format, select HTML, then press the HTML Settings button. Make sure the "Send pictures with messages" box is checked.

Problem: The image is hosted on a website that's busy, temporarily offline or defunct. Or the image file on the website might have been renamed or deleted.
Solution: Try again later or ask the sender to send it as an attachment instead of an inline image.

Problem: The image is hosted on a website, and you're not online.
Solution: Make sure your internet connection is active and try again.
