News, Notes and Memories

  • To Wendy Karen Stuart,

Carl Wellon (the father) was the driving instructor, and you are right, he was a very patient man, I too took the driving course. James Wellon, (the son) taught English and Allied Arts.

It would be nice to hear of Carol Conroy. We did not see her at the 30th or 45th reunion. She was one of the attendees at my 16th birthday party held at our house on Elm Street and lived a few blocks away.

  • To Carole (Kiever) Ohliger,

I remember the Sunrise Village in Bellmore. I went there after the Prom with my future wife Alice Davidson (1959). I remember the service was so bad that we did not leave a tip and the waiter chased us to the car in the parking lot yelling at us after paying the bill. The car was a 1950 Ford that was graciously loaned to me by my brother Art (1950) to help impress the ladies.

  • To Audrey Olsen Lent,

Please contact me via e-mail or phone.

  • To All,

I had the pleasure of attending my childhood neighbor and buddy and life long friend's 65th birthday last July. For those who knew Len Cuccaro (1957), he is well and living in Roanoke, VA with his wife Dale.

  • This note arrived too late for the January newsletter but is worth printing:

    Dear Pat,

Thanks again to you, Bob and Linda, plus the many alumni contributors for another great newsletter. It keeps getting better and better and I enjoy many of the contributions, plus articles by Bob Casale as they certainly bring back memories of our great years as kids in Hicksville.

Sharon and I will be moving into our new home in Chapel Hill, NC on or about the end of January (you know how new construction is!), so we'll be forwarding a new email address sometime soon. Please continue to use jcarfora@bellsouth.net until further notice.

We will also celebrate our 36th wedding anniversary this Tuesday, January 6th. We were married with 17" of snow on the ground in Schenectady, N.Y. in 1968 while I was home from Germany on leave from the Army. Joe Adragna and John Valenti (both '62) were ushers at our wedding and my brother; Santo ('64) was my best man. Even Mr. Galloway made the trip all the way from Hicksville to snowy upstate NY and we'll never forget our many guests who came from far and wide to help us celebrate!

    All the best,

    Joe Carfora '62

  • I enjoy the Hicksville newsletters but where is everyone from the classes of 1965-66?

    Susan Miltonberg, 1966

(I counted 47 names from the classes of 1965 & 1966 on our list. Pat)

  • Hello. I think that the newsletter is a great thing. I would like to contact anyone from the class of 1965. I moved away from Hicksville not long after graduation and lived in Germany for over 20 years. Having relocated back to the US, I have a home in DeLand, FL, and I am also trying to reestablish myself in Hicksville. I can be reached at 386-738-5140, william-rogan@excite.com, or 516-935-3377. I hope that there is a reunion planned for next year, but if not, I would be interested in helping to organize one. I look forward to hearing from anyone with ties to Hicksville, however, as I would love to reminisce over "simpler times."

Thank you for your initiative and work on the newsletter.

    Yours truly
    William J. (Bill) Rogan, 1965

  • Hi all,

I had the privilege to reconnect with my past BIG TIME through the Hicksville newsletter. Lorraine and Chris Anderson were kind enough to not give up trying to find me. They sent to me, a VHS video of my youth in Hicksville. All my dear friends and my dear sister were in the video too. God Bless you both, Lorraine and Chris. You have given me the opportunity to revisit "My youth".

I also reconnected with another dear childhood "pal", Jeanette Martello Lupis. We were very close and it was just so fabulous to be able to actually get back in "touch". Again, thank you Hicksville Newsletter.

    Fondly,
    Carol Tavormina Nill, 1960

  • Thank you for adding my name to the newsletter. My birthday is September 28, and thanks for not wanting the year. I will think of something to add to the newsletter. I still keep in touch with a few of my classmates, Ro Tringali-Malerba '55, Judy Latham-Devaul, and Louis Millevolte '55 who is my cousin. He lives in Wisconsin.

    Gail Fallon-Hessel. '55

  • My brother Harvey Olitsky forwarded the newsletter to me. I was graduated from HHS class of 61. I taught in Hicksville Middle School till I retired in June of '00. I now live in Naples, Fla. with my wife Judy. I spend my days golfing and fishing and enjoying the beautiful surroundings and warm weather.

Up dates on other Hix graduates:
Carl Schultz also lives here in Naples and has recently remarried.
Brad Jaworski lives in Holbrook. Also retired from teaching in Hix.
Lee Konits lives in Smithtown- retired from Smithtown. P.S. He is an adjunct teacher at SUNY Westbury.

I would like to receive future newsletters at sjolitsky@naples.net
Sy (Seymour) Olitsky, class of '61

  • Hicksville High School on Division Ave. opened in September 1955. The class of 1956 was the first graduation class. Does anyone know of any plans to celebrate the school’s 50th birthday?

Trivia

Since Spring training will be starting soon, here’s some baseball trivia for you sports fans:
(Taken from http://www.corsinet.com/trivia/)

  • A perfect game in baseball is one in which the same player pitches the entire game without allowing any player of the opposing team to reach first base -- by any means.

  • At Jack Russell Stadium in Clearwater, Florida, on June 26, 1985, organist Wilbur Snapp played "Three Blind Mice" following a call by umpire Keith O'Connor. The umpire was not amused, and saw to it that Mr. Snapp was ejected from the game.

  • Babe Ruth hit his first major-league home run on May 6, 1915. He was playing for the Boston Red Sox at the time. 'The Sultan of Swat' went on to smash 714 round-trippers before he retired, as a New York Yankee, in 1935.

  • Baseball rules were codified in 1846 by Alexander Cartwright of the Knickerbocker Baseball Club.

  • Baseball's National League was born in 1876. Eight competing baseball teams met in New York City's Grand Central Hotel. The first president of the new league was Morgan Gardner Bulkeley, who later became a US Senator. The eight original cities with teams were: Boston, Chicago, Cincinnati, New York, Philadelphia, St. Louis, Louisville and Hartford. Two of the original teams are now in the American League (Boston and New York) while Louisville and Hartford are now minor-league baseball towns.

  • Baseball's home plate is 17 inches wide.

  • In a typical season major league baseball will require 4,800 ash trees worth of Louisville sluggers.

  • Pitcher Joe Nuxhall of the Cincinnati Reds hurled his first major-league game in 1944. Nuxhall, the youngest pitcher in major league baseball, was only 15 years, 10 months and 11 days old when he pitched that game against the St. Louis Cardin

  • als. The distance between the pitcher's rubber and home plate in baseball is 60 feet, 6 inches.

  • The first players elected to Baseball Hall of Fame were Ty Cobb, Babe Ruth, Honus Wagner, Christy Mathewson & Walter Johnson in 1936.

  • The largest baseball card collection, 200,000 cards, is in the Metropolitan Museum of Art

  • The only father and son to hit back-to-back home runs in a major league baseball game: Ken Griffey, Jr., and his father, Ken Griffey, Sr., both of the Seattle Mariners in a game against the California Angels on September 14th, 1990.

  • Until the 1870s, baseball was played without the use of gloves.

  • When Henry Aaron hit his 715th Home Run, breaking Babe Ruth's record, the pitcher who served it up was Al Downing of the Los Angeles Dodgers. They were both wearing number 44.
