Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial UPDATE -
3/1/19 Fund Raising:
No new donations occurred in January, leaving our totals at $35,183,
with a net total of $34,308 in our bank account after past IRS filings.
The total number of donors remains at
198. All donors
(individuals, couples and groups) are listed alphabetically at the end
of this update. Please know if you have yet to
donate, you can still become part of the Memorial if you can spare as
little as $10 for this worthy cause to recognize your fellow alumni who
served our Great Country. We will very much appreciate any amount you
can spare. Remember, all donations are
tax deductible. Just follow
the simple instructions below. Your
generosity will be very much appreciated. Donation checks should be made out to: Hicksville Vietnam Era Memorial Project And should be mailed to: Hicksville Vietnam Era Memorial Project We began accepting
donations in October, 2014, upon achieving tax-exempt status from the
IRS. $3,400 was raised in
the remaining 3 months of 2014, $6,200 in 2015, $8,300 in 2016, $16,488
in 2017 and $675 in 2018. The
new total well surpasses our original $25,000 goal and expectations!
We owe this result to all our donors who have helped achieve
it over the past 4+ years!! John
Tranchina, HHS 1964 and a long time member of our Project Team who was
wounded in action while serving in Vietnam, is now heading up Memorial
Construction. He has
received firm quotes and the decision has been made to start by having
the stone footers made for each of the three Memorial stones (center,
left and right). Each footer
will be approximately 5 feet long x 6 inches wide x 3 feet deep.
A small portion of the footer depth will be seen above ground.
The center stone will be constructed first and will have the
Memorial's center plaque at the top, followed by an engraved list of
all those from Hicksville who paid the ultimate price in Vietnam.
The current plan is to dedicate the footers, along with the
completed center stone first, likely in late spring of 2019, followed by
the two remaining stones later. Initial
construction is planned for spring break week (4/22/19), when there will
be minimal traffic at the school. John
will confirm this with the school system's building superintendant,
David Bell, in a meeting with him on 2/27.
The last two stones will contain the full bronze plate listings
of all names and data from the Confirmed List, organized by class year. John
is also working with the nameplate engraver, who has suggested that we
abbreviate the data following each person's name, since the number of
alphanumeric characters will add to the cost of the finished nameplates.
We will start work on the abbreviated data and that will be
published herein when it is complete. The
Confirmed List of Names has been reduced to 1,929, from 1,930, since it
was discovered that one of our KIA's was not living in Hicksville
during his high school years. There
was either an error in the microfilmed news article on this name, or we
originally misinterpreted information in that article.
Progress in February was stagnant on the missing data for a
number of names. We
still need help from all our
readers here!! As
a HixNews reader, please help
us by reviewing both lists when you select the "click here" options
near the bottom of this update. To
save you time, just look for names from your class year and other years
you may be familiar with, as a reference and see if you have a new name
or some missing data on existing names to email to us.
Class years, where known, are specifically shown and missing data
is marked in red, to make it easy for you to see what's needed. The
Unconfirmed List was created to specifically insure that we don't
leave anyone behind from earlier class years (the 1940's and 50's)
who served during the Vietnam War Era and deserve recognition.
Please see if you can help us establish if these folks served
during the Vietnam Era (Vietnam Era dates are shown in the "Memorial
Qualifications" section below). Memorial Qualifications:
Overall Qualifications for the Memorial were displayed monthly in
this report for a long time and have not changed.
If you are a new reader, or have reviewed the qualifications
before and want to remind yourself of them, please check a January, 2015
or earlier issue of HixNews by
going to the Hixnews archive
section on the website. Here's what we need from each person reading this update to do: Please
