September
was a very active month with 26 new names added to the Confirmed List,
including one verified name from the Unconfirmed List.
This brings the Confirmed List to a new total of 1,858 names.
With everyone's help, we continue to make progress on both
missing information for names already on the Confirmed List and needed
information on the Unconfirmed List. Also
in September, one of our Project Team members, who was wounded in action
while serving in Vietnam, asked the Team to consider allowing Reserve
and National Guard members to be added to the Confirmed List of Names,
provided they served during the Vietnam War Era and otherwise meet all
other qualification requirements listed below.
Noting that most, if not all, of this group served on active duty
for at least basic training and did indeed serve in support of those
serving in Vietnam, we put this request to a vote by the 10 members of
our Project Team. A
two-thirds majority voted in favor of adding this group to the Confirmed
List, so this request has been honored.
It is noteworthy that all but one of the Team members voting in
favor of this action, served on active duty in Vietnam. As

here" options near the bottom of this update with your computer mouse.
To speed the process, just
use your class year or the years you may be familiar with as a reference
and see if you have a new name or some missing data on existing names to
email to us. Class years,
where known, are specifically shown to make this effort easier for
everyone. Missing data for
names is shown in red, to make it easier for readers to see what's
needed. The
Unconfirmed List was created to insure we don't leave anyone behind
from earlier class years (the 1940's and 50's) who served during the
Vietnam War Era and deserve recognition.
Please see if you can help us establish if these folks served
during the Vietnam Era (Vietnam Era dates are shown in the "Memorial
Qualifications" section below). With
official Memorial Site Approval confirmed in June, we are making plans
to raise funds to construct the Memorial.
We are still awaiting confirmation of our petition for
not-for-profit (NFP) status from the IRS, in order to proceed.
The petition includes establishing the account with the name Hicksville Vietnam Era Memorial, LLC.
In the meantime, a tax identification number has been obtained
for this entity. A draft of governing by-laws for the LLC has also been
prepared by Ken Strafer and will be circulated to the entire Project
Team soon for full approval. Memorial Qualifications:
A person must have been on active duty in one of our Armed Forces
during the Vietnam Era. The
person did not necessarily have to serve in Vietnam, because by being in
service at that time he or she faced the possibility of being sent to
Vietnam and was an integral part of strengthening our Armed Forces
during a time of war. Overall
