Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial

Three new names were added to the Confirmed List of Names in April for a new total of 1,812.  We are pleased that, even at this late date in the Project's timeline, new names continue to be added from HixNews readers! In, the past month we continued to make additional progress on missing information for names already on the list, thanks to your continued help.

In our work to insure that no one is left behind who should be included in the Memorial, please continue to help us by reviewing the Confirmed List of Names when you select the "click here for confirmed list" link near the bottom of this update with your computer mouse.  To speed the process, just use your class year or the years you may be familiar with as a reference and see if you have a new name or some missing data on existing names to email to us.  Class years, where known, are specifically shown to make this effort easier for our readers.  All missing data for names already on the list is shown in red, again making it easier for readers to see what's needed.

In addition, please go to the second website link shown below to see the full List of UNCONFIRMED Names for the Memorial and see if you can help us to establish whether or not these folks served during the Vietnam Era (note:  Vietnam Era dates are shown in the "Memorial Qualifications" section below).

Tentative approval was received from the Hicksville Superintendant of Public Schools, Mrs. Maureen Bright, to construct our Memorial at the Jerusalem Avenue Middle School Memorial Gardens.  Approval will be finalized once she reviews the site with the Board of Education at its next meeting.  She indicated with her approval, they are most likely to also agree.

Due to various issues, there is nothing new to report this month on the research taking place in Washington on our List of UNCONFIRMED Names.  We hope to have good progress to relay to you for the June 1 issue of HixNews.

Memorial Qualifications:  A person must have been on active duty in one of our Armed Forces during the Vietnam Era.  The person did not necessarily have to serve in Vietnam, because by being in service at that time he or she faced the possibility of being sent to Vietnam and was an integral part of strengthening our Armed Forces during a time of war.

Overall qualifications include:

  • must have been a resident of Hicksville at some time before entering our Armed Forces
  • must have attended a public, private or parochial high school while living in Hicksville (attendance at HHS not required)
  • must have served on active duty anywhere in the world during America's Vietnam Era (February,1961 through April,1975)
  • Both men and women qualify (We're stating this since, while a number of women have been added, we still have relatively few on the current list overall)

Our Project Team consists of the following HHS Alumni and Vietnam War Era Veterans:

·        Ken Strafer, Founder (HHS '62)

·        Joe Carfora, Project Coordinator & Master List (HHS '62)

·        Carl Probst, Input Data, Class of '59 & Others (HHS '59)

Dear Superintendant Bright,

Hope all is well with you.

On behalf of the Hicksville High School Alumni Vietnam War Era Veterans Committee, I have been asked to contact you about a memorial project which they are undertaking.  The committee is looking to create/install a Memorial honoring all Hicksville students who attended/graduated Hicksville High School and served in the military during the Vietnam Conflict (1961 - 1975).  To date, 1794 names have been accumulated.

The monument is planned to be three stones listing all the names of those Hicksville students who served.  The monument and its installation will be totally funded by donations and there will be no cost to the Hicksville Public School system.

The location of the Monument has yet to be determined which is why I am contacting you.  Three locations have been proposed: at the Hicksville Middle School 's Veterans Memorial Park , at the High School, or at Kennedy Memorial Park located between Jerusalem Avenue and Broadway.  The committee would like to install it either at the Memorial Park or at the High School.

My most important questions are:  What is the committee's next step in acquiring a location for the monument?  Who would be contacted next to further the process of finding a location?  Will I have to make a presentation to you or the Hicksville Board of Education?

I realize you have a busy schedule, but would appreciate any information/help you can provide.

Enclosed is a copy of a press release the committee will be sending out to the local papers about the memorial project.

Thank you for your time.

Best Regards,

William Walden

Re:  Proposed Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial

Dear Ms. Bright:

On behalf of our project team for the subject proposed Memorial, I am writing to seek your response to the attached letter sent to you on October 19, 2012 by William (Bill) Walden, Commander of Hicksville's Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post and a member of our team.  Bill's letter sought your input regarding the process we will need to pursue in order to gain approval to erect the Memorial we have planned either at the Jerusalem Avenue Middle School or at Hicksville High School .

After over four months, we have yet to receive a reply from you or anyone within the school system on this letter.  Our team has put a great deal of time and effort into this project to thus far compile a list of over 1,800 names to be placed on the Memorial, mostly consisting of HHS Alumni who served our Armed Forces on active duty during the Vietnam War Era.  As noted in Bill's letter, our intent is to self fund the entire cost of the Memorial and it's erection through an alumni funding effort.

As you may recall, the Vietnam War was controversial and unpopular among the American Public and our soldiers seldom received any sign of appreciation for their service at that time.  The lesson learned from Vietnam taught the public to do better by soldiers returning from serving during future conflicts, such as Iraq and Afghanistan and we are proud to see the public today shows a great deal of appreciation to those who serve our country.  Our purpose is to now erect a lasting Memorial as a strong symbol of appreciation for the Hicksville residents and classmates who served during the Vietnam conflict.

Along with a copy of Bill Walden's letter, I am attaching a photo of the Memorial's Center Stone plaque for you to see that we are now ready to proceed with the site approval phase of this project.

We would appreciate your response and comments as soon as possible.

Thank you,

Joe Carfora
