Attention All HixNews Readers!!
Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial Project Update

Thanks to the continued efforts of the HixNews readership, 10 more names were added in June for a new total of 537. Please see the Veteran's Section of this issue for the latest information on the project and what you can still do to help it succeed.

Thank you,
Joe Carfora, on behalf of the Project Team

In the June issue, I asked Diana Urena if she sent in the story about the soldiers and sailor who raised the flag on Iwo Jima . She was only relaying information that had been provided  to her by a friend.

Diana wrote that her Dad had been in WWII on the European Front.  The friend who sent the story to her  was a Sergeant in the Army.  He was one of only four survivors from an entire platoon.  You can see him on Diana's Facebook Profile.

Somehow maybe we can put something together as Americans to ensure that we don't forget what our forefathers did for America .  God bless you and your family.

The 1961 Reunion Committee met on June 13th. The month and day of the reunion is the subject of that meeting.  More to come about the reunion.

My sister, Karen Ann Savino Walsh

passed away October 16, 2009.  I just saw her name on the commencement notice in this month's issue... The Class of 1960.  I thought you might want to add it to your list.

I've lived on 11 Tobias St. since I was in the 4th grade (now that's a long time ago!). We converted my childhood home into a Mother-Daughter in 1978. Carvel was on the corner of Tobias St . & Jerusalem Avenue .  Mom used to joke that she moved to Tobias St . because Carvel was on the corner.  Dad thought it was very convenient for him to catch the bus on the corner taking him to the LIRR.

We had two big storms around the time Craig Bruckner & I were married (6/1/75 35 years!). I don't recall if the 1st was in "75 and the 2nd in "76 or the 1st in '76 and the 2nd in '77. Both I believe were around our anniversary, a year apart. In either case, Craig & I had been out.  On our way home, as we went down Jerusalem Ave to turn onto Tobias, and saw that there were all sorts of emergency cars and trucks.  Carvel had been hit by the storm.  The neighborhood joke was that we had all seen real flying saucers (Carvel Ice Cream Sandwiches).  The lawns in the neighborhood were littered with Carvel Products.

Luckily no one was hurt.  The owners of Carvel vacated those premises and went to the Center Shops.  They have been there ever since.

Bob,

Can your computer expert tell me why the page that supposed to allow me to organize my "Favorites' just comes up blank? I have Windows XP and I am unable to delete any of my "Favorites."

Mike Cava '66

------------------------------------------------

Our computer geek columnist, the late Bob Wesley, died a few months ago.

I'll take a shot at helping, though.   I'm assuming that you're using Internet Explorer as your browser. Has it been updated?  Version 6 is now out of date and is unsupported. It's been replaced by version 8.

I use Firefox as my browser and like it a lot better. When you install it, you should be able to import your IE favorites and, perhaps, recover them that way. You can get Firefox free here.

Roger Whitaker, Webmaster for hixnews.com

------------------------------------------------

I installed Internet Explorer 8. Now the page just sits there with the word "Loading" and nothing on the page. Before it said "Done" on the bottom with a blank page. I live with I guess. If I start messing with this machine, it'll probably blow up on me. I just won't add or delete favorites.

Mike

------------------------------------------------

Mike, I've got to wonder if maybe your machine has a failed attempt at a browser hijack. You might want to download, install and run the free version of MalwareBytes.  Also make sure your antivirus is up to date and scanning.

Roger

Might be a good idea to put a suggestion into the newsletter for everyone to keep up

to date with their A/V and anti malware software, with regular scans! Also a good idea to do regular full back ups of their computers at least once a month. I use Acronis True Image, but it might be a bit too technical for most users to do a restore if needed, but it puts you back to your last backup. There are also a lot of third party storage sites that charge less than $10/mo for Online storage.

Your computer completely smokes, and you can download your data to your new one!

Bob Gillette

Editor Note. I use Carbonite . The fee is reasonable and the backup occurs continuously as you add or change data. The initial setup takes about two days, but your entire system is saved.

Thanks for thinking of me. The birthday card was nice. Hope to see you and the rest of the gang when the class of '61 has it's 50th next year.

Summery Cucumber Salad with Tomatoes and Red Onion

Ingredients

·  1/4-cup cider vinegar (the better the vinegar, the better the salad)

·  1/2-teaspoon salt
·  1-tablespoon sugar
·  1/2-teaspoon celery seed
·  pepper to taste
·  2 medium cucumbers
·  1 medium red onion
·  2 medium tomatoes

How to make it

Mix vinegar, salt, sugar, and celery seeds in a measuring cup.
Peel the cucumber (either completely, or leaving a few stripes of green) and slice thinly
Slice the onion and tomato
Combine cucumber, onion and tomato in a bowl or a container with tight fitting lid.
Pour vinegar mixture over vegetables and either stir or cover and shake. The vegetables should be well coated in vinegar mixture.
Refrigerate for at least 30 minutes, and up to several days
Sprinkle with pepper and serve

I usually double up on the dressing. It coats the mixture more completely and enhances the marinate.

I hooked up with the Alzheimers center in downtown Augusta . I took Joyce myself several times to check out the facility and to witness what they do. What a blessing and those who cater to her during the day are precious people. They are extremely dedicated to their immediate task and it shows in the way they handle the people on a daily basis.

I found a local transportation company, Columbia Transit. The bus comes at 8am and picks Mom up to take her to the center. The bus retrieves her up at 3pm and she comes home. They charge $6.00 round trip (less than the amount of gas I used taking her and picking her up myself).

Below is Sarah, my granddaughter, walking Mom to the bus in the morning...

She's concerned about Grandma. After Joyce is gone, I take Sarah to school.

Dear Bob,
I receive the Hicksville newsletter and I would like to be added to the class list for the class of 1969.
Thanks

What's the biggest advantage of going back to school as a retiree?
If you cut classes, no one can call your parents.

Hi Buf Bob

I have a request. May I give you a list of names to be put in the newsletter? The list would be of people we are looking for; you could ask if anyone is in touch with these people.

Thanks

Hi,
I am looking for Sharon Wyer Class of 1963.

Thank You,

Joe Barna '63

Dear Sharon (Wyer) Ward (Class of 1962),

We are forwarding an email inquiry about you (see below) that we received from Joe Barna (Class of 1963), Hicksville High School .

Joe's email address is in the header of this email. We have protected your own privacy by placing your email address in the blind copy (Bcc).

Best, Henry

Dear HixNews
I would like to give you my new e-mail address (concealed for security reasons) so I can keep receiving the HHS Newsletter.
Thank you,
Jane (Schaeffler) Dieterich '60

I love this one!  As an animal lover from the day I was born, I should have gone into the vet field, now I just take care of my 2 girls (Ginger and Suzie), I call them my black child and my brown child - and am thinking of volunteering some time at our local shelter - they are always needing help.  The only fear I have is that I will bring something home and make them sick, so I need to find out from them if there would be a problem. Your interview with the Hix Newsletter was very good, I enjoyed reading it.
Kathy Koziuk Hannaman '60

Hi Guys!

My wife and I would like to subscribe to the newsletter.  Dennis & Catherine (nee Arico) Joannides, class of 1961 at this e-mail address (email address concealed).

Thanks a lot

    Dennis Joannides                Cathy Arico

Hi, Dennis:

Thank you for replying to my recent e-mail asking for information.

I have added Catherine to our April birthday list and you to our May birthday list.  Sorry we didn't know about your birthday sooner.  I hope you had a great day last Monday!  I have also added the anniversary date of you and Catherine to our December list.

When you have a minute, please let me know what state you live in.

Thanks, again.

Jean

---------------------------------------

Hi Jean

Thanks very much for getting  back to us so quickly.  We live in upstate New York , Rock Hill near Monticello in the Catskills. We enjoy reading the newsletters and thank you and the others involved  for putting in the time and effort to produce it.  I noticed that you graduated in 1959 and I was wondering if you knew my cousins Chris and Elias Elia?

         Chris Elia                              Elias Elia

Thanks again.

Catherine and Dennis

---------------------------------------

Hi, Catherine and Dennis:

I knew your cousins, Chris and Elias Elia, probably as much as they knew me - by name and looks only.  I did pull out my 1959 Year Book and they are who I had pictured in my mind.  Pass on my regards to them both.

I have added NY next to your names on our birthday and anniversary lists.

Enjoy the Newsletter!

Jean

Dear Editors and Staff,

Just sending a belated "Thank you" for the lovely anniversary card we received from you in May.  May 10th was our 52nd anniversary and I can't believe it has been that long.  Tom and I were engaged just before Christmas of 1955 while I was still a junior in HHS.  "They Tried to Tell Us We're Too Young" sung by Nat King Cole was "our song" at that time.  Tom entered the Army in March of 1957 and was stationed near Heidelberg, Germany.  He came home on leave in May of 1958 for our wedding, and we then went overseas and spent almost two great years enjoying our time in Germany, touring a bit, and having our first child in Heidelberg Army Hospital the following May.   We returned home in 1960 and eventually purchased our home in Bethpage, where we raised our 5 children.  We both ended our working careers in N.Y. State Supreme Court in Mineola and retired in 1994.  Now, 12 grandchildren later, we are enjoying living in rural Pennsylvania near most of our family.

On another note, I was saddened to see that Thomas Bucco, class of 1960, had passed away.

We lived next door to each other on Elwood Ave. for a few years and used to "hang out" when we were younger.  Along those lines, is there any reason why there is no listing for those in the class of '57 who have passed away?

Thank you so much for all your work on the newsletter.  I enjoy reading it each month.

Carole (Kiever) Ohliger '57

Dear Carol,

On behalf of the editors, thank you for your kind words.

As for why there is no list for the Class of 1957, the reason is the same as for all the other Class years for which we have no listings: We can only list those names that have been brought to our attention.

Best, Henry

Hi Everyone,

Looking forward to seeing you tomorrow night.  Many classmates will be gathering at the Hyatt hotel bar at 4pm Saturday.

In the May issue I saw where Ruben and Gerry Calllejas moved from Calif. to Texas. They were both classmates (1953) and attended our 50th in 2003. We have a list of addresses, email addresses and phone numbers for most of our class. Could you get Ruben to send me or Pat Lenser Caruso his new e-mail address. I tried and sent an e-mail to his old address but I had no response. Thanks  Steve Moddle stevespipercub@aol.com

Thanks for the GREAT work on the newsletter.

 Hi there,

I would like to add my name to the spreadsheet please. I'm Elizabeth Brumm and my maiden name is Flynn. I graduated in 1967 from HHS.

Thanks so much for the birthday card...really cute.

Bob and the Hix gang,
You guys are the best. I enjoyed watching and listening to my birthday card. I enjoyed the inaugural interview with Bob though the piece about Jerry Judge was gut wrenching. Keep up the awesome work. Les and I continue to look forward to the first of the Month for news about the old gang and our hometown.
Please change our current address from Connecticut to Rhode Island. We have a store called Del Sol located in Mystic Village, Mystic, Ct. off exit 90 on Interstate 95 (next to the aquarium). Any alumni going by are invited to stop in and say hello.
Best Regards,

Bob Smith '63

Thank you for our wedding anniversary card - 35 years this past June 1st!
Craig & Paula Bruckner

Thanks so much for the card marking our forty-second anniversary tomorrow. I can hardly believe we're old enough to be marking such a milestone. We're thankful for good health, useful work, and wonderful children and grandchildren. (After having three grandsons, our first granddaughter—Sabrina Carmen Henry—was born May 19.)

I love the new Profile feature. I think no one deserved  being "numero uno" than Bob. How selfless of him to do so much work  on this newsletter while caring for his wife. He  epitomizes the very best of our HHS Alumni.

Eileen Walter Toscano '59

....thanks so much for your kind words. I think my concern is a result of family values taught to me by my parents. My mom had Parkinson's and the last several years of Mom's life, she was confined to a bed and had a feeding tube. My dad who handled her for the first several years couldn't any longer. She went into the Torre Pines Nursing Home in Las Vegas. My dad used to visit her and they had a mobile bed that he could use to take Mom for a walk outside in the garden area.
The newsletter has become a vendetta to me and I enjoy the fact that so many readers are participating and sharing the wonderful years of our youth growing up in the great environment of Hicksville. Thanks again.
love yah buffalo bob casale

I visited the alumni links web sites. I think this is a nice addition to the news letter because it lets everyone know what interesting things people are doing in their life and what business they're in etc. Never know when you will need one of their services.

Please ad my site to the list.  www.didley-squat.com  Yes I did say didley squat!

editor note...you've been added

You guys ... have made our newsletter betterer and betterer!

I sometimes don't have time to read the newsletter, but did read it this month.  You all did a great job with the 1960 50th reunion bio sketches not only the way it was set up with its separate link, but with the inclusion of their pictures.

The newsletter has become so interactive.  There are so many comments from our readers.  I remember when Bob was pleading for people to send us information.  Now it looks like he has plenty of tidbits coming in.

Great Job!

Love,

Jean Goettlemann LaPointe

I'm already a subscriber but please add my name to the class list for 1960.  Thank you.

Rosemary Olivari

Hi Bob,
Thanks for sharing these pictures, everyone looks fantastic.  I am so sorry that I missed this reunion.  I am looking forward to viewing the next batch.  God Bless and thanks again.

Yesterday Ford Motor Company announced the end of the Mercury Brand after 79 years.  Since 2000, we have lost Plymouth, Oldsmobile, Saturn, Pontiac and now Mercury.
For those of us who have spent a lot of time on old Route 66 reminiscing about a more innocent time in our country's history, I thought these pictures say it all....
And Paul Simon said it best: "Where have you gone Joe DiMaggio?   A nation turns its lonely eyes to you.......Joltin' Joe has gone away."
How many of these have you driven???

Hi Bob

Read your Bio.......very, very interesting!  I knew Guy Lombardo.  I worked in his restaurant "Guy Lombardo's" in the summer the first couple of years after high school.  Personally, I couldn't stand him but he did have the right idea.  His restaurant was in Freeport, on the water.  It really was very, very nice and quite popular at the time.  I also worked for a month at the Jones's beach Zack's Bay showboat.  I worked the month that Louie Armstrong appeared in "Hello Dolly".  He was rather old and also mostly blind but it was an absolute thrill.  I was 20 years old and on the break between the afternoon and evening shows I sat outside his tent and talked to him.  I love him still.  Now that's someone to look up to.  Guy Lombardo was not a really nice guy like Louie Armstrong!  Thought you'd like to know this stuff!  My love

Joan Sabatella Plock

The big question of the day is "How Did Buffalo Bob Casale Get His Famous Nickname"? There are many theories but what is the real story behind the name???

One of our readers has a theory and we are presenting his reasoning of how the buff got his name.

Although he was not called "Buffalo Bob" in the old days, I remember Bob Casale, when he lived on the other end of Lantern Road.

I also recall a hot summer day when a carnival was being set up at the Gertz Shopping Center. Bob and a few older friends were losing their proverbial shirts to a midway shyster who ran a game in which the "contestant" had to knock over a bowling pin on the back swing of a ball suspended from a chain.

I was there watching and noticed that when the shyster showed the contestants (Bob et al.) how easy it was, he placed the bowling pin off center and knocked it down every time.

I told Bob what was going on.

Bob told me to be quiet and mind my own business.

Bob was BUFFALOED...hence the name Buffalo Bob.

He and his friends walked away penniless.

I wonder if he remembers that incident. I've never forgotten it.

Bob Peluso

Now, it's your turn to present a theory about how Bob was nicknamed Buffalo Bob.

Send a note to editors@hixnews.com

--------------------------------------------------

Bob

Your story is the best I've heard in a long time. Old age is creeping up on me and I'm curious how we know each other. Your name is familiar to me and you mention Lantern Road and I did live in that area...actually at 2 Berry Lane on the corner with Memory Lane. I think Charley Lantay and Marianne Miller lived on Lantern and Joan Sabatella.

       Lantay                             Miller                              Sabatella

Anyhow, I don't remember the incident.

In high school, I was the sweetest guy you'd ever want to meet, so I really don't think I would have told you to "keep quiet and mind your own business," although, If I was being "buffaloed," I might have said anything.

This is a good story and I am going to post it.

What I'm going to do is ask a question, "How did Buffalo Bob get his name." Then post your response and ask others to theorize about how the buff really got his name.

And Joe, why don't you write a little story about how you think I got my name and I can post two responses and see if we get more.

Also, I don't see Bob on our mail list for the newsletter. We have a Joe Peluso listed. How do you know about the newsletter?

And I looked at Joe's list and it says St Pius for your school. You didn't go to HHS???

Thanks

buffalo bob casale

----------------------------------

Bob,

I remember you from the "neighborhood." We did not hang around together. At that age, three or four years was an unbridgeable age difference.  However, I always thought that you lived on the other end of Lantern Road. I lived at number 78. The fourth house down (direction West Village Green) from Fork Lane. The fire hydrant was in front of our house, by the curb.

It was at the corner of Lantern and Fork that I, as a kindergartner, caught the bus to Nicolai Street School. Then, went to Lee Avenue School for the first half of first grade--until construction of Fork Lane School was completed. After sixth grade at Fork Lane, went to seventh and eighth grades at Hicksville Junior High School. Then, to high school at St. Pius X Preparatory Seminary in Uniondale.

I don't recall Charley Lantay or Marianne Miller. The name Joan Sabatella rings a bell; but, I can't place a face to the name. Billy Palmer, Tommy Kinsella, Mike Dubester, Francine Levine and Larry Senn were all classmates of mine from Lantern Road; and, Donna Alu from Fork Lane. Perhaps you remember Bill and Kenny Murray, and Jane Curtin--denizens of Lantern who, like you, were a little older than I was. Also, Franky, Danny, Billy, and Bobby Barrett--"The Redheads" ("The Reds" for short) as they were known collectively. Bobby Barrett, however, had blond hair. "The Reds" were all younger than I. Also, Bobby and Dottie Rausch lived on Gull Road--on the way to the pool. Bobby (Major Robert Ernest Rausch, USAF) was KIA--Body Not Recovered--in Vietnam on October 9, 1973 (see www.thewall-usa.com). And, David Grimmner (a St. Pius X alumnus) from Memory Lane died in the collapse of the World Trade Center on 9/11.

Billy Joel lived around the block on Meeting Lane--on the other side of the sump behind the Barrett's house. I believe Billy took piano and dance lessons at Miss Francis' studio at the corner of Lantern and Memory Lane.  Also, one of my classmates at Fork Lane School was Dennis Dias--a founding member of the rock group Steely Dan.

Oh, what memories !

Many thanks for what you and Joe and the others are doing at HixNews. I look forward to future issues; and, of course, to the article about how "Buffalo Bob" Casale got his moniker.

Best regards

Bob

My name is Gwen Schaaf, class of 1955.  On the list you have my maiden name as McQue.  It was actually McCue.  Please change the Q to a "C." Thanks!

---------------------------------------------

Done.

Thanx for the feedback, Gwen.

Best, Henry

----------------------------------------------

Every year at this time, when school "gets out," I remember that it was usually around the last week in June that the "carnival" came to town.  My first recollections of it was around the late "40's" when it was right on northwest Broadway  right about opposite Thormond Ave. and Willoughby.  This was way before Gertz and Mid Island Mall was built.  The "Whip"  was my favorite ride.  There was always a carousel, a Ferris Wheel, and the "swings" were always in the back looking over a big field. Not the same every year, but there was always a House of Horror, or mirrors or freak show or something.  Cotton candy, games of chance like throwing pennies into open mouthed bottles, knocking milk bottles over with baseballs, shooting "ducks," gave daddies and beaus the opportunity to win a stuffed animal for their girls.  It lasted for a week, and then moved on.  As Hicksville grew the carnival moved to the NW corner of Old Country Road and Newbridge Rd. That was in the early and mid fifties, before the shopping center there now was built.  I remember a carnival sometime in the sixties being in the Sears parking lot across from Mid Island Mall, but the days of the carnival seem to be over, at least in Hicksville.  Too bad.  They were good memories.

Does anyone else remember them?

Gwen McCue Schaaf '55

How can I email someone on the list of classmates who I want to say HI to?
Anne Marie Wright '60

Dear All,

Anne Marie Wright asked a question others may have wondered about too. Here is how to do it:

  • Send an email to hixclass60@googlegroups.com saying, "I want to get in touch with John Doe."
  • Your request will be broadcast to all the members of this group "HixClass60," including John Doe.
  • If John Doe wants to respond to you, he will simply reply to your email, which will be sent to you only, not the whole group.
  • At that point you and John Doe will have each other's email addresses and remain friends for ever.

We have not had any info so far about Carol Maggio.

Did your friend Carol ever find you??

I found her on Facebook

Thanks

Martin,

I presume you mean Judy (Brandfon) Greenfield found Carol Zaza? It was Judy who was looking for Carol, not the other way around.

This wouldn't be the first time a third party got confused about who was looking for whom, in which case we were notified, in effect, that the person who was looking, was still looking?

Please confirm.

Best, Henry

--------------------------------------

Yes, that's correct, Henry.

Thanks!

Thanx for the confirmation, Martin.

It's so nice to receive Card's for our Birthday's and Anniversary's from our old stomping grounds. We went back last summer to bring my parent's ashes to L.I. cemetery as per their wishes, and I had not been back in almost 25 year's. Wow has Hicksville changed. We live in Fl. for the past 26-year's and we just moved to a senior community in Leesburg Fl. and love it! No more cutting grass!!! no more work!!! Just lots of free time. Who knows someone from Hicksville may even live in our Park, It's called Hawthorne , no it's not the villages! everyone asks us that. If you know anyone who does live here Rod is class of '64 and Susan (me) '68 .If not your missing a great place! Hi to everyone who may remember us?
Rod and Sue Merkler

Thank you so much for the birthday wishes!
I really appreciate hearing from you all!

Hello Bob
Thank you so much for that thoughtful birthday card
Terry Bisaccio (married to Mike Bisaccio '61)

Little Johnny watched, fascinated, as his mother smoothed cold cream on her face.

'Why do you do that, mommy?' he asked.

'To make myself beautiful,' said his mother.

She then began removing the cream with a tissue.

'What's the matter?' asked Little Johnny. 'Giving up?

Little Johnny's at it again...... A new teacher was trying to make use of her psychology courses. She started her class by saying, 'Everyone who thinks they're stupid, stand up!' After a few seconds, Little Johnny stood up.. The teacher said, 'Do you think you're stupid, Little Johnny?' 'No, ma'am, but I hate to see you standing there all by yourself!'

Beer in Moderation is Good for You

A new report says that beer in moderation is good for you. The report says that beer is a rich source of vitamins, fibre, minerals and anti-oxidants.
A spokesman for The Beer Academy who commission the report said "Beer contains vitamins which can help you to maintain a well-balanced healthy diet, fibre to keep you regular, readily absorbed antioxidants and minerals such as silicon which may help to lower your risk of osteoporosis".
Beer is the world's oldest and most widely consumed alcoholic beverage and the third most popular drink overall after water and tea.

Dear Bob and staff

Thank you for the anniversary card. It was so sweet of you.

It's our 42 Anniversary tomorrow. I wasn't sure I'd make it but

I'm still hanging in there. I still go for chemo once a week.

Some days are better than others but I'm able to be out and

about. It's been over a year since I was diagnosed with inoperable

pancreatic cancer. It's metastasized to my liver and my ribs. I go

for another PET scan the end of June to see if it's gone anywhere

else. Keep me in your prayers. Prayers are what's keeping me

going.  thanks

Eileen (O'Halloran) Holmes class of 61

For decades pundits have been saying that the New Orleans Saints were so bad at playing football that Hell would freeze over if the Saints would ever win The Super Bowl.
On Sunday, February 7, 2010 the Saints won the Super Bowl.
On that same Sunday, Washington D.C. was paralyzed under several feet of snow and the Government was shut down.
Do you think this indicates the actual location of Hell?

Carrie and I want to thank "The Gang" for the anniversary card that celebrates our 35th year together.

Hi Bob,
If  you haven't found out yet, I'll put my two cents in.......it looks like a black praying mantis but I've never seen one of them other than green. ....maybe it came up from the Gulf!

Did it bite you? Looks like a brown grasshopper.

Bob, that is a plain old "Stink bug". I have tons of them hanging around my fruit trees. They also love squash and cherry tomatoes! If you crush it, you will smell the stink, which actually can smell both sweet and acrid!

Hicksville Man Honored for Community Involvement

by Katie Kennedy

Richard "Dick" Evers, well-known over the years for his work as a teacher, historian, author, and volunteer, was recently honored by the Town of Oyster Bay Board .  A portion of Second Street , crossing Frevert Place , Sterling Place and Jerusalem Avenue , was named " Richard E. Evers Way ."  Evers, a former teacher of one Billy Joel, and an active member of the Hicksville Historical Society who once sponsored bus tours around famous landmarks in Hicksville , served as a U.S. Marine from 1942 to 1946.  More information can be found on Mr. Evers in the History Room at the Hicksville Public Library.

Evers passed away on February 25, 2010.

Hicksville Vietnam War Era Memorial

Ten more names were added in June for a new total of 537.  We want to thank all of you who have contributed and continue to contribute names and information to this project.

Editor Note...please go to Honoring our Veterans for full story

To the Editors:
On Monday, June 28, 2010, the New York Times featured a front-page article by Jan Hoffman entitled, "Online Bullies Pull Schools Into the Fray." The story discussed the problems and concerns of students, teachers, and school administrators regarding bullying via electronic means: texts, tweets, Facebook postings, YouTube, etc. I recall my generation at HHS had a similar cancer: the slambook.

I remember it being a marble notebook with one student's name atop each page. The book was passed around and the receiver wrote a comment below the person's name, much like graffiti on a building wall. While for some the comments were reaffirmations and reinforcements of popularity, good looks, nice wardrobes, physical prowess on the sports fields, etc., for most the comments were teases, slurs, and disparaging remarks about physical hygiene, sexual orientation, race, and other supposed disliked, unpopular and despised attributes.

I would appreciate comments and recollections regarding the slambook.
Please write to me at Listort@aol.com  with any remembrances and reminiscences.
Thank you very much.
Dennis Listort HHS '64

I read the New York Times article on Monday too...it was excellent...and immediately brought to mind those black and white composition books, the Slam Books, that were furtively passed around as early, I think, as junior high. I was always curious about them (none ever passed into my hands) and what they contained, but it apparently their existence was serious enough to catch the attention of our teachers. Over my years in junior high and high school (mid to late 50s),  I witnessed at least a dozen occasions where teachers confiscated a slam book, but as I recall, no disciplinary action beyond that was ever taken, at least in the presence of the rest of the class.

It would be interesting to hear the views and the experiences of fellow classmates about slam books, how (and perhaps when and why) they originated, whether they relected social changes of the period and if and how they relate to the electronic bullying issue that may no doubt be affecting their children or grandchildren. I would love to see the results of Dennis Listort's research.
Vicky Penner Whitaker, '58

I can remember certain people passing me a slam book and asking me to make some comments. I refused because I treated all people with respect. Pretty much the same way I was treated and we're all not perfect.

What is interesting to me is that no one made comments about the way I was dressed. I wore clean clothes all the time and had a relatively fair amount of different clothes. The reason was that my grandfather worked at a very exclusive Apartment Building in Brooklyn, Turner Towers . People used to shower him with clothes for his grandson. I had three sisters who were more deserving of new clothes, so my "gift" from Grandpa was very welcome.
Buffalo Bob Casale

Thanks Bob for the great job ! You are amazing...because of all your hard work so many friends and classmates have been reunited...Truly you should be so proud and sleep well knowing that what you do makes so many people happy !
My thanks and appreciation again,
Maddy Frischman Liebowitz '60

A note to Dennis Naso from Buddy Bowles
Thank you for all your effort and  recent notes.   You had asked whether we know the location of any classmates.   Eileen and I live in West Chester , PA.   We do see

Arnie Klingenberg  and                Maureen (Thogode) Klingenberg
as they, too, live nearby here in West Chester , and they would like to attend. In case you don't have their email, it is on the cc above.
Presently, Eileen and I don't think we will be able to attend the upcoming 50th reunion.  However, please keep us on your distribution list in case things change for us.
Take care,

Dear HixNews

This is a message from Rosa Szendy about her son Roberts kidney replacement.  Once again, you are asked to pray.

Thanks

Dennis Naso

-------------------------------------

Hi everyone...

Today Robert got news that some of his numbers were low...not good...about the rejection of the kidney or meds for the kidney.

So on Monday, June 28, Robert will have a biopsy done. We will be at the hospital in NYC for about 4 hours...... I am upset, but Robert said it is better to know now... he is so brave about this whole thing.

Time for even more prayers!

Love, Rosa

------------------------------------

Hi Everyone,
Here is the latest update on Robert's Kidney transplant (operation June 1). Last week the doctor told Robert that some of his blood tests were not as good as they should have been, so he recommended a biopsy of the new Kidney. We took Robert to Columbia Presbyterian Hospital in NY on Mon., June 28.

On Tues. Robert got GOOD NEWS! The doctor said that the Kidney looks beautiful and although Robert's white blood count is a bit low, the doctor actually lowered some of Robert's medicines. He takes more than 20 pills a day. One of the anti-rejection medicines will be lowered from 8 pills to 4 a day. This medicine is one of the most expensive ones, costing a few thousand dollars a month. Another expensive medicine will also be lowered in dose. This is extra good news, especially since Robert's medicine coverage has not started yet. When I spoke to Robert yesterday, his voice sounded happy and his attitude was positive. He said that he knows that things can change from day to day and week to week, but he was so glad to have good news.

Robert & Melissa (Rob's fiancée) and our entire family continue to thank you all for your prayers and email. As you may know, avoiding rejection of the new kidney, will be a life long journey for Robert.

The next 3 to 6 months are a critical time where the Doctors will keep on tweeking the medicines to fit Robert's needs according to many blood tests. They do not want to have to do another biopsy.
God bless you & your families ... good health and a happy summer to all!
Love, Rosa & Paul & Family
