People Looking For PeopleI see Tom Ernst is looking for Gwen Cobb. I knew the Cobb family as I dated Gwen's older
brother in High School. Gwen died many years ago. I cannot remember what year but it is more than 20.
It was well before I left NY and that is over 20
years ago now. I no longer maintain contact with any of the Cobbs. Last I knew, her mom was still living on Hearing Gwen's name and thinking about the Cobb family sure took me
back to a spot in my memory that I had not visited in a long time....good
memories..a few not so good but that's what all of this is about I
guess...taking ourselves back in time now and again...overall, it warms

me that Linda had unexpectedly passed away. I don't
see her name listed on the 1968 In Memoriam, so I thought I would forward
this information to you. Linda was
married and had 5 children. She was living in Maxene (Frimmer) Grove '68 Dear Alumni I can't believe that...I saw him about a month ago. We spoke of Hicksville High. He said he was supposed to graduate in '66, but graduated in '67 like I did. Joyce Jurgensen '67 I received some

Their mom passed away about a month ago and they were still trying to sort
things out after her passing. Mary is about 8 years younger
than Jim and she thought he graduated in 1966. Jim was a DJ in

I knew and loved Jim and recently re-connected with him via Facebook. Jim
worked at WBAB, WLNG, WPAC, WSUF, WLIX and many other stations in NY and
NJ..as well as WDUV and a host of other stations in Florida 'twixt and 'tween
the Tampa and Sarasota markets. He was always up..happy..entertaining..charming..engaging and a true friend to me. There are many likeminded as Jim
was that way with everybody. Hi Bob, Didn't know him well, but did know enough about him to say that he was one of the "Good Guys". His listed address in the yearbook at that time is 20 Plover Lane, Hicks., NY, 11801. The best. I

Dear Bob Unfortunately
the In Memoriam section will grow commensurately with our aging
population. We have taken substantial steps to honoring those that
served our country but there are many of our classmates that have left us
that weren't in the service...they too had many friends in high school
and I am sure that their families will appreciate the posting on In
Memoriam. The
list of athletes and school leaders from all classes that are no longer
with us is sobering. The newsletter has become a great vehicle for
reconnecting and finding out where we all ended up in life... Your
work and the work of the editorial staff is greatly appreciated. I
hope that more of the classes from the 70s and 80s start participating
too... Have

your In Memoriam column. Ellen "Sandy" Sandler Wolfe '60 Hi Gang, I noticed in the List of Memorandum under 1964, some names were missing. One is Diane Maynard, my best friend. She died when she was forty years old from breast cancer. So, she is gone almost 23 years now. The other is Bruce Solid who died before he graduated but would have been in the class of '64. He passed near the railroad tracks. He was also a very close friend to me. I think it is a great idea to list the deceased under their graduate year Great job you are all doing. Happy New Year. every month for years, I decided to send my own hello. Just retired this year from
teaching. I actually did teach one year at HHS right after I graduated
from college. I was a PE teacher then and taught with Gloria Franke,
Flo Saunders, and Fern Zeitlin....it is a wonder I remember all the names. At my 50th reunion, I
reconnected with Alice Sitler Huffstutler. She lived within 10 miles
of me and I never knew it. Now we get together often and Ginny Mohr
my BFF from 6th grade and HHS is still my BFF. I visit her on LI
whenever I can. As I said I miss LI, and
when I last was in Judy Wycoff Neely '57 ------------------------------------------------------------ Judy... My graduation year, 1961, we did South Pacific. I originally tried out for the part of Luther Billis, but wasn't selected. Another person trying out got the part. Two weeks before the production, the staff, including Mother Fletcher, came to me with bad news. The fellow selected had to drop out. They asked if I could help out and take the part. You probably know the work involved in such a production. I said I would give it a try and they handed me a book with my lines. To make a long story short, my teachers, the other kids in the play and the staff doing the show were so helpful. I was allowed to read my lines during class. At noon, I would get together with some of the other kids and we would go on stage and walk the part...just to get the positioning. The best thing was that Ms. Zeitlin had to teach me how to do the hula. I would see her several times a day when I had some time. Understand, too, that this was my fifth year in high school. I opted at the end of the previous school year to stay an extra year. I only needed one and a half credits to graduate. I failed the problems course (that was Pat Naso's class). I even went to summer school and took two courses but not problems. The only thing I really had to take that fifth year was problems. I took other courses. But I had less pressure than most of the students. I stayed because my girl friend was a junior in 1960 and had one more year. She was President of the Student Council, Captain of the Varsity Cheerleaders and in the National Honor Society. It was one of the best years of my life. I had a lot of fun doing the play and participating in other activities. Thanks for taking the time to share with our alumni. We were singers in a doo-wop group called Henry & the
Starlights and we sang "Sometimes" and "Don't You Just Know
It" at our Junior Prom. Every
time I sing "Sometimes" with Stardust, it brings me right back

Ed and family lived in Cold Spring Hills before his death. Ed and his wife Peggy had three children ( I believe all boys). Peggy moved to Massachusetts to be near one or more of their sons and grand children. I think, aside from his family, Ed's proudest moment may have been his completing the NYC marathon. I just had to comment on Tom Ernst's post about Mr. Morocco because it made me laugh out loud. Reading it, I immediately recalled my 10th grade Spanish class with Mr. Morocco. Even though I was kind of shy in school, for some reason I'd like to cut it up in Mr. Morocco's class. Maybe because of how he would turn beet red with exasperation. As soon as he faced the blackboard, I was at it. I'd hold up handwritten signs, make funny faces, pantomime behind his back. Robin Bagatelle, who sat behind me, would start cracking up first, which then caused me to snort with laughter. A red-faced Mr. Morocco would spin around on his heels, stare me down and demand," What are you laughing at?" "Noth-ing...," I'd answer, eyes downcast, trying hard to stifle my laughter. And then, he'd say, "There are places for people who laugh at nothing, Señorita," in that characteristic nasal falsetto of his. Thanks for the memory. I guess he had a pretty good sense of humor. Hi Bob, Terrific December issue! FYI, Hope Lambert was class of '69 and was voted "Best Dressed." It sounds like the library concert was fabulous. To this day, Brooklyn Bridge is one of my favorite bands. Finding their music is not easy. am sending you photos of my visit with Aileen (O'Campo) Dixon and her
husband Steve. They arrived on one of the largest cruise ships to
berth in Portland Harbor. It had a capacity to house over 3,000
people. My little ferry looked like a toy next to this ship. We
made an attempt to do some site seeing but a torrential rain made it
very unpleasant. We opted to pick up lobster at the Harbor Fish store on
the wharf and then we took the ferry to Peaks Island, where I have a small
cottage. The rain did lighten up a bit, just enough to use the golf
cart to cruise around. We visited one of the civil war museums that sits overlooking the ocean and then it was back to my home for lobster. Here
we are sitting in my kitchen just about ready to dig in. You can see
the steam rising from the table.
Carol - Aileen - Steve It was such a treat to be with old friends. We were remembering a time when Aileen's daughters joined us for a night at Wilson's Garage to see the Grease Band. It was a fun time. It must have been in the mid 80's, when we were young. Life took us both in many directions in the years to come. How wonderful true friendship is. You can pick up the conversation like it was just the night before the senior prom or the day after sports night. I
like what I see of the mini-reunions that have cropped up for the class of
61. How much nicer to talk to people in small groups as a prelude to the
50th. I will keep you and your family in prayer as you navigate through the struggles of Alzheimer's. Sincerely, Carol (Makowski)

The only other stores I
remember on the left were Schwartzes' furniture and Goldmans' department
store and that was before reaching Old Country Road off in the distance. This I recall and all are
treasured memories. I shall remember them always. Hank Chupka Class of 55' When I first learned of Hixnews, it was my immediate task to locate my classmate, John Petree. As there was no response under "People looking for People," I called my classmate, Ron Rocek, who began to search the Dallas, Texas area, but his efforts were unsuccessful. At that point, I called John's alma matter, Muhlenberg College, whose alumni department informed me that John died, but provided no details. I was devastated and profoundly upset. John was my boyhood friend who lived around the block from me. We met at the age of 8 and remained close throughout our school years. Because the letters of our last names are so close to one another, we often were in the same homeroom and classes at Nicholai Street school, junior high and HHS. Due to our close proximity to the high school, and with no bus transportation, we often walked to school until that magical age of 16 when we were able to drive. Both John and I went to college in Pennsylvania, kept in contact, but our paths separated after graduation, when John returned home to Texas and I to Long Island. He sent me a congratulatory note when I married Louise Clark, HHS '61, in 1966. Still wanting to learn more about John's death, Muhlenberg College put me in contact with his sister, Judy, who called me from Florida. I was touched when she reiterated that just before he died, John was fondly reminiscing about HHS, his teachers, and his boyhood friend. John died on December 2, 1983 of colon cancer, at the age of 41. Rest in peace, dear friend. Bill Ramos, HHS '60

would like to nominate Cheryl Gries Brown for a place in the Hall of

(class of '63) Paul was one of the most dynamic and funny people any
of us in that class ever knew. I was lucky enough to not only be his
friend from 8th grade on, but also his roommate in college.
After a gap of over 20 years after college graduation, we once again
became close friends, starting in 1998 at a college reunion. Paul passed away in April of 2002 of complications
from inhaling too much of the "dust" that erupted from the collapse of
the twin towers. He was in a meeting on the 76th floor when the
first plane hit the North tower. He was also in the World Trade Center in
the 1993 bombing. Each time he got out, but not easily. Paul's wake was something not to be missed, as each
of his close friends and relatives recounted all of his incredible
humorous stories and pranks. He was one of the best people I ever met, and I'm
sure many others of the class of '63 have similar memories. I've attached a picture of Paul taken in our room
in college. Some, who knew him well, may say he had an extended middle
finger that I edited from the picture. I say they are probably correct J

Hey Bob, Again have a great Holiday! Last night we had our first snowfall. We had about 5 inches on the ground but it has been unusually warm so the streets are clear. By this time we usually have two or three storms and I am strapping on my snow cleats to keep myself from falling as I walk down my steps (12 of them) and down the hill to the boat. I sometimes ask myself why I do this. It was my husband's idea to move here. It was his summer place as a child and a young adult. Now I am hooked on it. I have a place in Palm City Florida but if it comes down to living in one place it will be here in Maine. Will send you photos of the island once I get the hang of the phone camera. My digital camera is missing. My husband lost three of the cameras and I hid mine so well I can't find it, although I would like to think he found it and lost it. He also lost my new bike. He would take it for a ride and usually I knew about it and would reclaim it. The last time I never knew it was gone. Such is life with dementia. You laugh with it or you don't survive. They say that alzheimer victims don't make new memories. We went to Prince Edward Island a year before his death and he decided he liked Molson Ale. He reminded me every time we went into the market. Is that just a guy thing? Of course we bought a six-pack each time. I made one of the biggest decisions in my life this week. I gave my Superintendent and Board President my retirement date, December, 2010. Now it is official. Yikes! Be well, Carol

Her birthday is in February and she is married to her spouse Bob Vigliano for 40 years. So, please hook her up with the News and maybe send her a cheerful note because she just underwent abdominal surgery for a benign tumor, thank God.! Thanks Judy Marcus '64 I recently moved from Hawaii where I lived for 42 years. I now reside most of the year in Santa Rosa, CA. I am a widow. My husband Tom Grist and I were married Dec 29,1962 in Hicksville at St. Ignatius Loyola Church. The Air Force took us to Hawaii and that is where we made our home all those years. I have two children, now both married with children, living on the mainland. Have 3 granddaughters, 16, 12, and 8. I became a teacher after graduating from the State University College at Plattsburgh in 1965 and joined my husband who went ahead to start his tour of duty with the military in Hawaii. I taught 37 years on Oahu. (FYI: One of my students was Akebono, famous Sumo wrestler (one of the only non Japanese sumos. He was my kindergarten and first grade student. He then was a tall skinny kid. He has retired from Sumo wrestlng but still is very popular at home in Hawaii and does other freelance wrestling).
I go back regularly to visit my
friends and check on my condo. I think Hawaii gets into your
blood. I get homesick hearing Hawaiian music.

If anyone is not familiar with the Turkey Bowl, it is a flag football game played each year by former Hicksville High students. The highlight this year was the return of Commissioner Emeritus, Tom Mirhow ('68). He was in attendance strictly as an observer. The game was won by the team led by Commissioner Ken Uhlich ('72). A great tailgate party followed the game. Everyone was in really good spirit as the traveled home to get ready for Thanksgiving dinner. Your friend here at home. Any
time you feel dumb, don't worry. Check out the following excerpts from a
"Wall Street Journal" article by Jim Carlton. Lots of people are
dumber than you. 1.
Compaq is considering changing the command "Press Any Key" to
"Press Return Key" because of the many calls asking where the
"Any" key is. 2.
AST technical support had a caller complaining that her mouse was hard to
control with the dust cover on. The cover turned out to be the plastic bag
the mouse was packaged in. 3.
Another Compaq technician received a call from a man complaining that the
system wouldn't read word processing files from his old diskettes. After
trouble-shooting for magnets and heat failed to diagnose the problem, it
was found that the customer labeled the diskettes by rolling them into a
typewriter to type on them. 4.
Another AST customer was asked to send a copy of her defective diskettes.
A few days later a letter arrived from the customer along with Xeroxed
copies of the floppies. 5.
A Dell technician advised his customer to put his troubled floppy back in
the drive and close the door. The customer asked the tech to hold on, and
was then heard putting the phone down, getting up and crossing the room to
close the door to his room. 6.
Another Dell customer called to say he couldn't get his computer to fax
anything. After 40 minutes of trouble-shooting, the technician discovered
the man was trying to fax a piece of paper by holding it in front of the
monitor screen and hitting the "send" key. 7.
Another Dell customer needed help setting up a new program, so a Dell tech
suggested he go to the local Egghead. "Yeah, I got me a couple of
friends," the customer replied. When told "Egghead" was a
software store, the man said, "Oh, I thought you meant for me to find
a couple of geeks." 8.
Yet another Dell customer called to complain that his keyboard no longer
worked. He had cleaned it by filling up his tub with soap and water and
soaking the keyboard for a day, then removing all the keys and washing
them individually. 9.
A Dell technician received a call from a customer who was enraged because
his computer had told him he was "bad and an invalid". The tech
explained that the computer's "bad command" and
"invalid" responses shouldn't be taken personally. 10.
An exasperated caller to Dell Computer Tech Support couldn't get her new
Dell Computer to turn on. After ensuring that the computer was plugged in,
the technician asked her what happened when she pushed the power button.
Her response, "I pushed and pushed on this foot pedal and nothing
happens." The "foot pedal" turned out to be the computer's
mouse. 11.
Another customer called Compaq tech support to say her brand-new computer
wouldn't work. She said she unpacked the unit, plugged it in, and sat
there for 20 minutes waiting for something to happen. When asked what
happened when she pressed the power switch, she asked "What power
switch?" 12.
True story from a Novell NetWire SysOp: Caller: "Hello, is this Tech
Support?" Tech:
"Yes, it is. How may I help you?" Caller: "The cup holder
on my PC is broken and I am within my warranty period. How do I go about
getting that fixed?" Tech: "I'm sorry, but did you say a
"cup holder"?" Caller: "Yes, it's attached to the
front of my computer." Tech: "Please excuse me if I seem a bit
stumped; it's because I am. Did you receive this as part of a promotion,
like at a trade show? How did you get this cup holder? Does it have any
trademark on it?" Caller: "It came with my computer, I don't
know anything about a promotional. It just has '4X' on it." At
this point the Tech Rep had to mute the caller, because he couldn't stand
it. The caller had been using the load drawer of the CD-ROM drive as a cup
holder, and snapped it off the drive! Another well-known one that I can add is the true tale of the user
who called up complaining that the instructions said to load the four
diskettes into "Drive A" but he couldn't possibly get more
than two in. The Power of a Badge
DEA officer stops at a ranch in Texas, and talks with an old rancher. He tells the rancher, "I need to inspect your ranch for Illegally grown drugs." The rancher says, "Okay, but don't go in that field over there," as he points out the location. Don't go in there!!! The DEA officer
verbally explodes saying, "Mister, I have the authority of the
Federal Government with me." Do you understand? " The rancher nods politely, apologizes, and goes about his chores. A short time later, the old rancher hears loud screams and sees the DEA officer running for his life chased by the rancher's big Santa Gertrudis bull.
With every step the bull is gaining ground on the officer, and it seems likely that he'll get gored before he reaches safety. The officer is clearly terrified. The rancher throws down his tools, runs over to the fence and yells at the top of his lungs..... "Your badge. Show him your BADGE! "
