Bill Walden with Grandkids Kaitlyn and William Bozzello on Memorial Day 2009 Hicksville Vietnam
War Era Veterans Memorial current total to 338. While this was not as good as May (with 63 new names), it was another very strong month. 116 new names have been added in the last 2 months, slightly more than a third of our total, so our momentum is being sustained thanks to the help
of numerous Hicksville High Alumni who continue to send us names and
information! of 1964. Jay was in the Army and served in Vietnam and is also very committed to this Project, as are all team members. In addition to adding 13 names for us in June, Jay has contacted The Anton Press, publishers of The Hicksville News, Hicksville Illustrated, The Hicksville Pennysaver and a number of similar publications for other Long Island communities. The Anton Press has agreed to run an article with our request in these news publications to broaden our search for people who qualify for the Memorial.
Once again we ask that for your part as a reader of HixNews and former alumnus of HHS, please see our update in the Veterans Section of this newsletter. After reviewing the
qualifications for the Memorial, please review the list of names and let
us some of the missing information or clarify information we have that is uncertain (shown in red and with question marks).
While we have gained significant momentum, we still have a long way to go, since we estimate there could be between 2-3 thousand veterans with ties to Hicksville who served in our Armed Forces around the world during the Vietnam Era.
Thank
you, Bob, thank you for the lovely card. Thanks for the anniversary greeting! Forty-one years seem to have raced by, but we're grateful for health and stamina to go out and celebrate tonight! Bob and Crew, Thanks, Bob - got the June Newsletter. Editors: Hey Bob, where have you been since May 2? Bonnie
(Scharr) Papes Bonnie We had to stop the trip on
May 11th. Ted talked with his wife,
Terri, in New York. Plus, my daughter, Dawn,
had her hands full taking care of Sarah, my granddaughter and Joyce who has full
blown Alzheimer's. Dawn really needed help, so
we cut the trip short and plan to continue. Just when, I'm not sure. The only drawback (not
really a drawback) is Sarah. I get Sarah at 5:45am as Dawn is leaving for work.
Sometimes, Sarah is asleep...sometimes we have to watch Sprout. I'm learning
all the songs. However, I go to the gym
every day (OMNI) and work out on the equipment after I drop Sarah at school. I
even go when I don't drop Sarah at school. High school was different.
I can remember running the track when all the girls were out there playing field
hockey, or softball, or whatever they did after school. We really wanted to
impress them with our prowess at physical activity...hey; they were doing the
same thing...trying to impress the guys. Enough thinking about old
times. Poor Joyce is hanging in
there. Anyhow, I will let you
know. Love yah bob G'day
Everyone, Thanks
again for a fabulous newsletter!
I was just forwarded this
newsletter from my cousin. My name
is Susan (Garb) Love, class of '72.
I live in Santa Barbara, CA with my
husband and novelist Bob Mitchell and our Labrador retriever,
Koslo. I am a professional
artist. It would be lovely to
receive this newsletter. Thanks. Susan Hi! I noticed that Kathy has
been deleted. She had trouble with her
e-mail address at excite.com and switched to aol. You can send the
newsletter to her at Biblekathy1@aol.com.
I also noticed that my last name was
misspelled in the list of HHS graduates by year. My correct name is Gail (Di
Leo) Cuoco, class of '64. Thank you for the wonderful
newsletter. I enjoy reading about graduates of HHS and what they are doing now. Gail DiLeo In the Rudy Pinotauro
picture, I've recognized two more of the girls. Upper
right blonde is Pat Holden and lower left, leaner chick, is Beverly Kaye. Hope
you can get some of the others identified by other folks who get the newsletter. Regards, Marianne Carine Hoerner '68 Hi Bob: Linda Faraone Connelly
'60 Hi... My name is Audrey
(Olsen) Lent. I graduated in l951 and
my husband Bill Lent and I still live on L.I. out in Shoreham. We look forward
to the Hixnews every month and appreciate all the hard work that's put into
sending it to all of us every month. I just want to thank you
and the HHS Newsletter staff for the lovely anniversary
e-card. On top of all your other
newsletter duties, you also make time to
remember birthdays and anniversaries. It
is very much appreciated. Thank you again, Carole (Kiever) Ohliger
'57 Dear Robert, Thank you so much for
the lovely anniversary e-card! That
was cute and thoughtful.
We celebrated our 40th anniversary on a weekend away in Williamsburg,
VA. It was great! I really enjoy the
newsletter every month. Great job! Kathleen J. Adamo Bob, You made my day!
Great card and much thanks. Leslie and I also thank you for the
anniversary recognition. 42 years married to my high school sweetheart Leslie
Worley Smith and 6 years hanging out in high school and college. Great to see names from the
good old high school days, the Winkel clan updating their address and the
awesome high school year book photographs of old friend Vic Rerisi and his
beautiful bride who without I never would have made it through HHS graduation as
well as St. John's graduation. They are two great people and would love to meet
up with them sometime in the future. You guys are terrific and
keep up the great work. Bob Smith Class of '63
I was so saddened to hear
of Pat's passing. I had the
opportunity to chat with her about
Hicksville reunion possibilities last year and she was so helpful and kind. I want her family to know
how many lives she has touched through this website and how she will be in our
prayers and hearts forever. Thank you all for the
wonderful selfless job you do for all of us "Hicksville at Heart"
graduates who stay connected to our wonderful childhood friends because of you. Stay well. Dianne and Marty Burkhardt
(1968 & 1963) Hi, Enjoy reading your newsletter. I was wondering how some one
gets elected to The Hall of Fame? Charlie Gouse, who recently passed away
was such a great music educator, and taught for 25 years in Hicksville.
His recent obituary in Newsday outlined all his professional accomplishments.
I would like to see him added to the Hall of Fame. On July 20, I will
celebrate my 70th birthday. Dorothea (Hoffmann) Salzberg Class of 1957 Editor Note: We will accept your note as a nomination of Charlie Gouse for inclusion in the Hall of Fame. We normally make a selection at the end of the year. I'm so sorry to hear that Pat died. This newsletter has become one of my favorite things and she has been very much a part of it. Please express my deepest condolences to her family. Pat Meehan Kelly Welles '58 Dear HixNews Editors, Thanks for another great issue and for "advertising" our effort
up front like this!! That will definitely catch everyone's
attention, should the lead in in the Newsletter Section not do it. Best regards on Behalf of The Hicksville Vietnam Era War
Memorial Project Team, Joe Carfora '62 Hi All, How very sad to
hear the news about Pat Driscoll; I have enjoyed reading the Hix News and I know
she was very passionate about it. I did send an e-mail months ago to let you
know I am chairing the HHS '69 Forty-Year Reunion (through Reunions of
America) "See announcement on home page"Thanks Diana (D'Antuono) DePalma-Henne New Reader Vincent Hannigan class of

Polli class of '75 Love the job you guys do on
the newsletter. Look forward to it every month. For some reason I
didn't receive it this month (June). Just wanted to make sure I was still
on the list.. Thanks,-- Editor Note...We had a
little problem during the first installation of our advice to you that the
newsletter is available following the death of Pat who always wanted the
responsibility for publishing advise that the newsletter is available. Pat
always published that we were on line. Bob screwed up the
hyperlink...please don't chastise him for that. But, if you want to, please
chastise Bob because Bob has big shoulders. Plus, this is a reminder. We do not send the
newsletter to our subscribers. Our newsletter is published monthly to our
website... http://hixnews.com You can access the website
any time you want to. Enjoy...we enjoy publishing
to the website... Hi
Bob... I
am Pats Daughter, Jen. I
cannot thank you enough for the awesome lovely note and check to Hospice. (Editor
note...the check to Hospice in Florida was a gesture from the Newsletter editors
but also is a contribution from all newsletter alumni that loved Pat. The family
requested a donation to the facility instead of sending flowers or Mass cards.) I
know this is just as hard for you as it is for us. Mom
always talked about the 2 Bob's (actually there are three Bob's). She
talked about great, wonderful people and all the friends she made through the
newsletter or got back together with via the Internet. I
cannot tell you how proud I am of my mom. Pat was a kind, loving person with a
heart that was so big. So big that it helped pump her heart for so long when she
was suffering. And
she always recognized the love she had for the newsletter and all the wonderful
people who loved her for being so sincere and so in touch with reality. Thank
you for helping sustain the newsletter that Mom started. Please keep it going. I
love reading all about Hicksville and the wonderful community we grew up in. I
will keep in touch and you do the same, please. Thank
you again and God bless you and your family. Love
always Bob: Thanks, June!!!
Bob... Thank you so much.
What a lovely thing to do. Can't believe it's been 52
years and I'm still with the guy from Mepham High whom I fell in love with
in my Sophmore year at HHS. Time really does fly by when your happy. And to think, "They
Tried To Tell Us We're Too Young!!!!!!!!!!" Bob, Found
a picture of me with Archbishop Cooke (before he took over the NY Archdiocese
and became Cardinal). I was taking my 4th Degree in the Knights of
Columbus. He was one of the speakers. (1 June 67). I
didn't see much future in NY and I had burned the bridge to my Dad's
business. So I took an Air Force Civil Service job at Sheppard AFB here in
Wichita Falls. I worked there from Oct 74 until retirement in January of 2002.
We raised 5 kids and never felt like leaving here - although I now feel the
100 degree summer heat much more than I did when we were young. God's
been good to me and life is enjoyable. What the future holds is unknown - my
wife has been diagnosed with the early onset of Alzheimer's but the only
problem so far is a minor problem with her balance. I'll keep your and your
family in my prayers. Jim Wise New Reader... Graduation year: 1972

Cise. Elaine (Grecz) Libert '62 On May 26, 2009, the Hicksville Historical Society honored
Hicksville Veterans at their meeting in the Hicksville Library. Society
President Bob Koenig welcomed member Mark Thomas, as host, providing questions
to ask our guest Veterans that night. Our five veterans that night, Michael
Kilty (Iraq), Richard Uhlich (Vietnam), Artie Uhlick (WWII), George Thomas
(WWII), Sam Bergholtz (WWII) made for a diverse cross-section that made Mark's
presentation so interesting. The Society heard tales of bravery, capture, and
rescue that could have continued onto another night. Yet every Veteran showed
mutual respect for each other's tales. It was truly a moving meeting. For

would have taken better care of myself! (Actually, Thank GOD, I'm in
excellent health) Mike Cava Buffalo
Bob, Joan and I received your Happy Anniversary greeting card. Thank you
for your thoughtfulness remembering our anniversary (#42 with 3 grown children
and 7 grandchildren). Sorry it took so long to open the card, however I am a bit
paranoid about viruses spreading with greeting cards and will usually wait for a
reminder, which is my clue that the greeting card is real. I
trust you are doing well and want to take this opportunity to thank you for the
effort you put forth keeping our alumni in touch. Best regards, Tom
Pilko I was not able to "link" to the
1959 Reunion Committee via HixNews, but thought you might forward this info if
it helps them locate someone on their "missing alumni" list: Send request for info to editors@hixnews.com Hope this helps. Thanks for remembering our anniversary. Did you leave Long Island for good? Are any other 1961
graduates living in Georgia? Take care Mary Ann & Frank Smith Editor Note...I am gone from Long Island for good. Yes, there are
quite a few transplants here in Georgia. Ten
more names were added to the Hicksville
Vietnam War Era Veterans Memorial the first day of publication of the HixNews June 2009
issue! Thanks
for the Editors for thinking to also put us in the email cover note announcing
the newsletter's availability!! Joe Carfora All, You are receiving this email if you are on the list of Hicksville
Vietnam War Era Veterans, as I have many of your email addresses saved
in a special column on our Master List of names. I apologize in advance to
those of you who may receive this email more than once if you are also listed as
the contact who supplied additional names to me. This is because I copied
the emails directly from the Master List and pasted them into the send list of
this note. In any event, I'm doing my best to pass along Bob Casale's note,
which appears below. As most of you know, Bob is a Vietnam War Era Veteran
and also one of the editors of HixNews. If you have one or more
pictures you'd like to send Bob from when you were in the military, please
email digital pictures directly to him or send prints to his home address 335
Patton Court, Martinez, GA 30907. All prints sent to Bob will be returned to
you. Please do not reply to me regarding this request. Send your
replies directly to Bob Casale at bufbob@juno.com. Thanks, Joe Carfora HHS 1962 P.S. to All: We now have 295 names on the Master List of Hicksville
Vietnam War Era Veterans. Due to the large number of recipients of
this email, I have to send it out multiple times in smaller batches for it to go
through, so do not be alarmed if you do not see one of your friends on the
distribution list as that person is likely on a separate mailing of this note. Editor Note....I have received a nice selection of photos from
various alumni and I thank you for your quick response. I have an idea that
I'm working on and request more photos from more alumni. There were a lot of
us who served. Send more. Warm Regards Buffalo Bob Casale Hi, Would you please disconnect my e-mail address off your website? There are really not a lot of classmates that I know on the newsletter each month. Thank
you. Hi my name is
Lesley Hauser. I used to go by Lesley Hohauser. My brother Editor Note...here is note I got back from Susan after making contact.. Dear Bob, Susan add my name to grads: John L. Ennis 1950 Business Ed teacher 61-68 HHS Hi Bob, my name is John Ziegler (63), and a VEV like you. I received an e-mail from Joe Carfora, asking me to send some pictures with reference to our Viet Nam era. I've enclosed 2 attachments because they are about the only pictures that aren't buried away somewhere. The first is a picture of me when I got drafted in 1965, and the second is of the day I got married 10 month later. I married Adele Herrmann (65), in Germany. It's an interesting story of where and when we married. We will be married 43 years next month. Someday, I'll have to tell you about our marriage mania. I've also included a third attachment of my bride and I in Alaska, 5 years ago. Thanks to you and all of the Hix News staff. John Ziegler (63)

John and Adele in Alaska in 2005 Hello Bob, I tried to follow your escapades on your blog but I have not seen
any updates since early May. Are you still on the journey and if so where
are you. How is it proceeding? I know Pat's death has touched you and I am sorry for your loss.
It must have been great working with her. It sounds like her
enthusiasm was a very important factor in the success of the newsletter. Hoping you are still on track to Maine. The island is alive with people. Unfortunately it is very
rainy. Carol A. Kinney
Editor Note...see note sent to Bonnie
Papes earlier on this page. It was awesome, to answer your inquiry
about the journey meeting expectations. We saw some great things
because we spent some time in certain locations absorbing history and
the feel for the local people. I literally took almost a thousand
pictures. You can see some that were posted at
http://community.webshots.com/user/robertcasale
There are about 20 different albums
posted there that covers the part of the trip that was completed.

and nice to be remembered. Eileen (O'Halloran) and Paul Holmes

you and good job! Joan
Berger (Claudy) '79 Hi
Bob Thx
for the cute B-Day card, yikes 66!!! Now
how did that happen. You are all
doing a GREAT job and I was so sad to hear about Pat..... She will be greatly
missed by ALL. Are you back from your trip? I've enjoyed reading about all your adventures. I
received a note from Mary O, asking if I would help plan our 50th reunion (if we have one)
I told her count me in - haven't heard back from
her but I think we should definitely have a 50th - don't you? How
is Joyce doing? I've been working
doing computer input at a Alzheimer/Dementia
facility. One of my girlfriends
recommended me and I've been
working there for almost a year now (wow, I just realized it's been a year
already) and I see how hard it is for the family. Hope all is well with
you, keep intouch - Lillian Manzo Ramirez New Reader June (Sass) Reeve Graduated 1968 Birthday July 16 Anniversary September 24 Spouse Rudy Live in Mill Valley California Hi, I sent you an email the
other day regarding my brother Jerry Fischer. He joined the Army in
September of 1967 and served in Japan. He's HHS class of 67. I
should have given you his name as Jerome J. Fischer. Hope this isn't an
inconvenience. Thank You, Thanks, Debbie. There was no inconvenience at all as I never
received your first email and don't know why! So, I'm very glad you
wrote this second note. I just added Jerry with his full first name and
middle initial. Thanks for sending me the information. Also, I just sent a note to all the Vets who I have email addresses
for regarding a request from Bob Casale, one of the HixNews editors and a Vet
himself. Bob is asking that pictures of the Vets on our list be sent to
him either digitally or by snail mail. He wants pictures of them from
their military days. If you have pictures of Jerry in uniform, please
email them to Bob at bufbob@juno.com. I'll forward you a copy of the email request I sent out this
morning which contains his home address where prints can be sent if you don't
have digital pictures. Thanks again, Joe Carfora HHS 1962 A day ago I was
watching the Animal channel. The story was about
a reporter who was run down by a mule at a race in Brazil. And guess what? Roger Downey had a
big part in the show. It seems that he was there and perhaps part of the race.
In any case he was used as the expert on mule racing. Very cool and I delight to
me. I had spent some
time with Roger at the reunion and he spoke enthusiastically about his mule
racing. Ed Zivica '58 Hi Bob,
