Newsletter June 2009 I lost a Good friend this month! Pat Driscoll had a great many internet friends as well as friends away from the internet! Pat had a way of connecting with people that made them want to stay in close contact with her, and most found her emails to be both encouraging and relaxing. I began to exchange emails with Pat several years ago after I joined the newsletter as a contributing editor, and we continued to exchange emails several times a week right up through her admittance into a hospice just weeks before she passed. Most were personal and about our lives and families, along with cooking, recipes, and of course the weather. She would relate the goings on of her kids, grandkids and also her sisters, all of whom she was very devoted to. She was there giving me encouragement as I went from researching and selling 19th century paintings, and on to taking an oil painting class to "See how it was actually done", and then more encouragement as I found I liked painting and began to follow that path as an artist! We chatted on the phone a few times, but preferred to keep up via emails, which gave you time to collect your thoughts. Not talking in person, it was easy to forget Pat's ongoing struggles with breathing due to Emphysema, but she needed oxygen most of the time and when she went around her condo complex, it was usually on her "Scooter". Pat was the one who edited and transferred into Publisher, most of the submissions and letters that were sent into the newsletter, and she continued working on the newsletter while in the hospice, right up until she was just too tired to continue on! As her daughter Cathy said, "The newsletter was her other child"! How she managed to keep working on the newsletter and yet keep exchanging emails with her many friends while she was so fatigued, is truly amazing! So yes, I lost a good friend this month, and so did the other editors and a great many readers! She will be sorely missed! BoB Gillette Hi
Friends, I just
uploaded two videos of Dos Américas Guitar Duo performing "Hanging
Tree" and "Grave of Charlie Reynolds" from my "Shavano
Suite". You can view
these by logging onto YouTube and typing "jimbosseguitar" into the
search box. If you
like them, please take a moment to rate them and/or make comments. Good ratings
and comments help promote my music and Dos Américas.I hope to upload several
more videos soon. I am just waiting
on permission from the composers. I
also hope to complete the editing on a new Dos Américas CD within a month or
two. I will keep you
informed but if you wish to no longer receive e-mails, just let me know and I
will remove you from my list. Jim Bosse Jim and
Nancy Bosse Hi! I went
to the Martin Viette Nursery fundraiser for the INN (Interfaith Nutrition
Network) this winter. The INN is one of LI's premier mainly volunteer-based
organizations that help our neighbors in need with respect and dignity. One of
their functions is to operate 19 soup kitchens. During the presentation they
mentioned how much the clients love to eat foods that came from local fresh
produce flavored with fresh herbs. I grow my
own veggie and herb patch and volunteered some of mine. The INN representative
said that they would even come by weekly to pick it up. I was
wondering if any our alumni reside in Hicksville and would consider joining me
in this garden plan of mine to grow a sharing is caring garden. I can be
contacted via email at PaulaBruckner6175@gmail.com. For those of us alumnus who
live scattered throughout the US maybe they will join me with this project in
their own community. It can be as simple as dedicated a row to the INN, or one
extra plant, or planter. Iit can be as expansive or limited as you desire. For
those avid gardeners it will be easy and for those who never did this before it
can be an exciting project when you are paying it forward. A little contribution
can make a great difference in the lives of our neighbors (men, women and
children) who go to bed with a hungry belly. Thank you. Paula

Vietnam War Era Veterans Memorial Pat... I
have sadly neglected to tell you how great it is to see that missing list for
the class of 1959 reunion displayed so prominently. Hope to get some solid
response from siblings and friends that will help with our reunion scheduled for
October. We did just find another classmate but it was through face book. Carl Probst Hi Joe (Carfora) After looking at the list (great job, by the way) I did not see
Steve Walsh's name there. If I remember correctly, Steve was a helicopter
pilot in the Marines. Graduated in "65 with me. Also on
list is Mike Cullen, he is class of '65 also. Wilber Grant, I think is '64
along with "Skip" Huber. Jimmy Dykman was US Army RVN, class of
'66 injured in Nam. Kenny Payne, class of "66 was US Army RVN
(unfortunately, passed away some years back). Dan Rysanek was US Army RVN.
We were all part of the Mid Island Bowl crowd. Some of them belong
with me at the Hicksville VFW. The rest, we get together a couple of times
a year. I was once again elected Commander of the Hicksville VFW for the
2009 - 2010 year. If there is anything I can do to help, let me know. Next
year, I will be running Hicksville's Memorial Day Parade. Semper Fidelis I was delighted
to get the May HixNews; I thoroughly enjoy going down memory lane with each new
edition. Keep up the fine work! I saw the note from Hank and Rene
Cierski and it brought back some great memories - fishing in Oyster Bay, the
green 49 Chevy, BOTGL, etc. I still stay in touch with Wheel (Bill
Dylewski) on a somewhat regular but infrequent basis. I would love to hear
more about Hank and his family; does he have a contact email? Mine is hbutcher@bellsouth.net. Hi, "Hi Pat, Bob, THANK YOU FOR FORWARDING INFORMATION FOR MIKE LENNIHAN.. I JUST WROTE TO HIM.. GREAT JOB DONE BY ALL... Thank you for a wonderful job of posting this newsletter on the internet...My husband, Mickey and I enjoy it every month. A correction on your listing of names and years. You have me down as the class of 68 but I was the class of 69 Thanks for the great job you are doing. Hi John Ennis 1950 Gloucester, VA......great newsletter, been reading it for a few years(memory fails, except on my bank account!) God bless john HI gang, I love the newsletter. Very nice job. May I ask that the spelling of my last name be corrected. Hi All, Michael Patoka-class of 65--st louis MO I was really sad to read the obituary on Charlie Gouse. I would like to share a memory with you. The year was about 1946 or 47 when we played hooky from school together and we took the LIRR to the city. I sat and waited while Charlie took the exam was admitted to the American Federation of Musicians. I don't remember what else we did that day, but I was really excited about being friends with a professional musician. Please extend my sympathy to his family on their loss. Dear editors, Pierre Swick, class of 1957, resides in Waitsfield, VT. Hi Hi Hi Thanks for all your efforts! Hey Alice...the HIX NEWS doesn't have your graduation year.... Editor Hi Editors, Hi guys. Dear Editors: Hi All, Hey, youse guys, Hi All!
I am sending some information about the 400th anniversary of Santa Fe for all who may be interested. Hope to see some of you if you make it to New Mexico.

Here is a picture of me (Walt Gaylor) on vacation. Although I don't know Pat personally I do enjoy her efforts on the HixNews. Wishing her well in this difficult time.
Friendship comes full circle. In the early 60's, a group of Hicksville High School gals formed a high school sorority. Many good times were shared, but after graduation in 1963, everyone went their separate way. None of them forgot about each other though. Mary Anne Voss and Joan Volonino kept in touch until around 1973, then they lost touch. Classmates. com put them back in touch in 2003, and they got together in New York City in 2004 and 2006 and renewed their friendship. They decided to see if they could contact Leslie Chanin through Classmates.com and were successful. Mary Anne and Leslie found they lived only 3 hours apart in Florida. They got together for what turned out to be a very long lunch indeed. After the 3 were reunited, they decided to make the reunion complete and look for Marie Vanacore. Low and behold, they found her in Bethpage, New York. The "Fab 4 - Marie, Mary Anne, Leslie, and Joan - met for a nostalgic reunion in October, 2008, in Delray Beach, Florida. It is hard to believe that 4 people could just pick up where they left off - but so they did. A marathon 4 days of nonstop conversation and laughter took place, as every attempt was made to catch up on 45 years gone by.
Please add me to
your mail list....Bruce Rosenzweig, mitrecon@bellsouth.net,
I live in Highland Beach Florida, class of 1969 Hi: I enjoy getting your Newsletter every month and
especially love the old pictures of Hicksville where I spent the first 34 years
of my life. I looked at the new Alumni List. If you could please fill in
my residence as Long Island I would appreciate it. Dear Hixnews, Just one correction on the spelling of my maiden name,. It is spelled VERRALL, NOT VERALL. Just thought I would let you know. Also I read what Carl Probst (59) wrote about Fairway Farms. When I moved to Hicksville ,I was eight years old. My Father worked for Fairway Farms as a milkman. Many memories came back to me . I remember visiting the farm and going into the barn, and getting squirted with milk, I was horrified. Also my father delivered milk in our neighborhood, and my Mom and I rode in the truck, when we had to go down -town Hicksville.

Ghyll Owen Simoneschi - Class of 59 - March 31 Craig Campbell -
Class of 1973 - Pennsylvania Please add the
following names to your mailing list... The story about the fall of Saigon brought back many
memories. My late husband, Roy, was stationed in Subic Bay, Philippines
from 1973-1976 and as with all his many duty stations, I was with him.
It was a wonderful experience to live there. I was the president of the
base Navy Wives Club of America when the call came out for volunteers to help
with the boatloads of Vietnamese that would be coming in. They were
having them offloaded onto an island off the main base, I believe it was
called Grande Island. It was a sight to behold when a ship
(not a Navy ship) carrying many, many more people than it was made to carry
came into sight. They covered every possible square inch of that ship
and to look at it you would have thought it was about to roll over at any
minute. We were put in charge of the children. They came
to us filthy and lice infested from the long trip, hungry, thirsty, and
completely bewildered from something they could never understand at their
young ages. They were afraid of the showers, so we went right
into the showers with them - washing them down, shampooing their hair, and
soothing them with gentle words they never understood but I hope
translated our love and concern for them. Other women took them from
there to dry them off and provide them with clothes that had been collected
from our own children. They were then taken from us to be given a
meal and a place to lay their heads. I often wonder where they went
after leaving Subic Bay and just pray that they traveled on to a much
brighter future. Jeanne

Hi...I am Michael W. Fuchs graduated 1959 from Hicksville High School. I would like to get the monthly newsletter. Thank you Michael Fuchs Mike Great to hear from you. Been trying to find you for a while. How did you happen to find our site??? Enclosed are three pictures....the first... Eileen's sweet 16 party at 2 Berry Lane The second is Eileen with Husband, James Cameron Mahan, Federal Judge, Nevada District The final picture is a prom picture...I think this was taken at my house on Edgewood Drive. Good to hear from you. Warm Regards, p.s. many have asked about your brother Bill Bob I have been looking at the 50th Reunion site for a while
and spotted your name. I lived in Orlando Fl for 16 years and was Deputy
Director of a large non-profit organization when 911 happened. I knew right then
that I would have to move back to LI right away. All my family...mother, 3
children and now 9 grandchildren were here. I have lived here for 7 yrs
working part time at the Riverhead Home Depot. (I use to tell everyone I
would work there when I retired.) My mom passed away but I had 5 good
years with her taking care of her...and now make every communion, birthday and
holiday party with my family and x wife Maureen. Life is good and I had
decided I wanted to finally make 1 reunion. God knows if I will make any
more! As all of the names started flooding my brain I went to find
my yearbook. As luck would have it I found 58'. I am not sure I ever
had 59 because I left for the marines as soon as school let out.
Will tell you the rest when I see you. My son Kevin is getting married on
October 4th so it will be hard but I am determined to make it. Will see
you then I hope. Michael Hi Everyone, You guys do such a great job-I look forward to the Newsletter every month. Can you possibly help us (listed below) to put out a survey of people from the class of 1960 who may be interested in a reunion next Summer here on Long Island? Any one
interested can contact: Ann Carmody Burley

help you can give, Ann Carmody Burley I
was saddened to read Charles F. Gouse obituary. I was a trumpet student of Mr. Gouse in Hicksville in the late '50s. I've applied a life lesson from studying trumpet with Mr. Gouse. Charlie told me I was playing too loud and when the music would require me to play more loudly I would not be able to play more loudly if I was already loud. It took awhile to realize the importance of this simple technique in everyday life. Speak in a moderate voice always so when it might be necessary to crescendo you would have someplace to go and that would make a greater impression. I was fortunate to have related this story back to Mr. Gouse in a telephone conversation a few years ago. One of the greatest things a person can impart is a life lesson. I feel grateful to have studied with Mr. Gouse and apply his teaching beyond trumpet. (Stan
Bryer HHS '60, Smithtown, NY) Hey, I was
very sorry to hear about Pat. It seemed rather sudden to me, and took me
completely by surprise. On a
different note entirely, I thought you might want to know and/or announce that
as an artist I have a new and also my first ever gallery on the http://yessy.com
site. To access my
paintings simply type California Dreamers in the search box. And no, I don't
think you guys are fools, I'm just sayin'. Enjoy your
days. Claudia
Allen Class
of '65 Hi from Lizz Munkel Lester class of "57" .. I live at 746 Bland Point Road, Deltaville, Virginia, 23043.. My name was on your list but the state was not .. I've always used two z's on Lizz also. Thanks for always doing such a wonderful Job .on the newsletter. My heart is saddened for all of you that worked closely with Pat .. I'm sure the news shocked everyone .. I hope there will be a wonderful story about her life in our newsletter from those who knew her well. Sincerely Lizz Munker Lester "57" Thanks for the birthday card. My SS check-in July? will
be "even more gooder"!! Could you, or whoever handles this specific
part of Hixnews, take care of a minor change that needs to be made? I moved back
to the state of NY in Feb of 2008-after living in North Carolina for 5 years. I
believe it's on the list of birthdays, not the scrolling one-but the one in the
hixnews for the month itself...in parentheses after my name there is still a NC
whereas it should be an NY. That could lead to confusion if, for instance,
someone has a check for a million dollars made out to me and they're trying to
locate me near the Outer Banks-while I'm sitting here in Binghamton, NY...with
the sun actually out. Thanks loads. I appreciate your time. State Farm-who I
have for car insurance and renters' insurance called yesterday to wish me a
happy birthday. That's a new one. I'd rather they reduce their rates. Stay cool, (in the hip sense) Phil McCrea '65 Dear editors, I was deeply
saddened by the death of Pat Driscoll. We attended classes together
from kindergarten to graduation in 1956. We were not best friends but I
always thought of Pat as a sweet, very smart and lovely person. I really
got to know her again through the internet. I know I will miss her notes
and cards and hearing about her grandchildren and her life in Florida. I
intend to send a photo and information about how I knew Pat to her daughters as
they requested. She was a blessing to her family and the newsletter and
also to me and she will be sorely missed. Sincerely, Suzanne (Garrett) Cullen '56 Bob: Susan and I are so saddened by the passing of Pat Driscoll. We were actually family by marriage...my brother Neil was married
to her late sister Flossi... p.s. my nephew Danny was very close to Pat. Tommy Sullivan '63 What a delightful
surprise! Thanks for acknowledging our Anniversary. I enjoy
reading the newsletter and very much appreciate yours and the staff's time and
effort in making it possible. I was much saddened by the death of Pat K.
My sympathy to all of you who knew her. Regards, Jeannette Beauregard Wiesenhahn '57
